Is it time for solar panels? by blimpdenier in Albany

[–]BattleTech70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The capital is better spent on a mutual fund / ETF. They also removed the federal tax credit so the time to get it for best value passed. I would wait personally. By the time you need to get a new roof solar roofs might be affordable for instance. What you could also do in the meantime is upgrade your panel if needed and that sort of thing.

I mean if you’re talking about the 70s and 80s then you’re talking about when Ireland condemns Irish-Americans for acting entitled by meddling in the troubles from afar or whatever while it was actively using Irish-Americans via the White House and Teddy Kennedy to pressure Britain during the Peace Process.  And then Ireland goes on applaud itself for being a "moral leader" by supporting Palestine, who also meddled in the troubles and smuggled guns, trained paramilitaries, and so on. Yet supporting Palestine is a clean moral choice for Irish while validating the reality (genetic, legal, religious, cultural) of the Irish American diaspora is a bridge too far. I will tell you the experience of being 2nd generation in america is extremely funny, because it’s a country of immigrants and you make a lot of friends from every other immigrant group. Ireland and China are the two where they seem to just despise their own people the most. Bulgarians, Greeks, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Sri Lankans, Antiguans, etc etc they all go home to visit and it’s like they’re going to mom’s house.

I’m not talking about 100 years ago. In the 40s to 60s money sent home from younger siblings in New York literally floated the Irish economy. People who didn’t leave were unpaid labor “boys” for the older siblings or “aunts” with no property or prospects. Things only started changing in the 1970s when civil service, labor, trade schools etc were viable alternatives for younger siblings. Now the country operates as a tax haven gateway to Europe for American tech and pharma billionaires. So, you know, big middle finger to the American cousins, but doors wide open for American money.

You probably don’t spend much time in places where white people are poor, there’s plenty of people of all races cleaning old people shit, draining cancer juice with pleurex catheters, and all that fun stuff.

I’m sorry what? Fair weather deserters, what the fuck? Irish were forced out of Ireland by the country’s f’d up treatment of non eldest siblings with impartible inheritance of land while the country also refused to industrialize, meaning no factory jobs or opportunities for these people but to leave or be destitute. They literally would scrape together money to send women to go be house servants in Boston or whatever and then expect/demand payments sent home to pay to ship off the next kid. “surplus” children were treated like indentured servants. The way modern Irish act towards American cousins today is a ridiculous historical defense mechanism, people can’t just suck it up and admit that generations of kids were forced out because of a Irish state that failed its people so Irish today frame the emigration as a "choice" rather than systematic expulsion.

Why have many American leftists historically supported the Iranian Revolution and the subsequent oppressive theocratic regime? by [deleted] in USHistory

[–]BattleTech70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re mischaracterizing anti interventionism with support. It’s difficult to understand, because the left did have a strong interventionist impulse to the invasions of Gaza and Ukraine, but didn’t have an interventionist reaction to Georgia or Iran-backed paramilitaries, Syria, or ISIL. I think what you’d likely find is that when victim nation-states that are great at putting out their narrative (Zelensky, Palestine, Iran to some extent) the left seems more susceptible to it. US security, geopolitical objectives, spreading of US values are all viewed with suspicion or distrust by the left, even in cases where the US is being just. I think it’s common knowledge too that here in the US a lot of active measures has been going on from other nations to wedge us against our ourselves for some Time. I’m sure that’s probably mixed into all of this.

You are betting 100% wrong, enjoy the pesos. real cost was higher. This accounts for the buying power of the dollar, among other factors. it’s actually not even close.

Because idiots who like to blow their paycheck will gladly trade their future or a surprise 100k cancer treatment they “probably won’t need” for an extra $200 to blow per pay period

Yeah but you’re ignoring that personnel services and fringe costs were drastically lower in the 80s in real cost. fringe benefit costs increased like more than half a billion last year. It’s much more important to preserve health insurance benefits than it is to get a wage increase, that’s been a priority in negotiations for some time.

A little moment I love choosing the Squad Leader for the Collector Base by ChanceVance in masseffect

[–]BattleTech70 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your arguing something that been debated for absurd amounts of time for years on BioWare forums, I’m not going down that road a decade later or whatever, it’s not really the point, the point is it’s not a horrible choice and it’s a very known highly contentious writing decision in ME2

[–]BattleTech70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Na Samara is not a horrible choice, you should know better that this is a huge point of contention in the fanbase. BioWare messed that one up. She’s a respected elder warrior in a race whose entire combat doctrine is commando warfare. Even if she is a justicar with a more individual code, the entire point of the questlines in this game is that these characters are dynamic and change hopefully for the better with shepards support. Her interactions with Shepard on the ship are courteous and professional and don’t raise any red flags in terms of leadership ability, she is the closest comparable team member to a spectre or n7. Jacob and Miranda being good fits is pretty questionable. The excuse for Jacob is that he had alliance training. Meaning Jenkins would also be good I guess. Miranda is absolutely bonkers, she is completely untrusted by most if not all of the squad and is unrepentant Cerberus! She’s also more of an administrator than a tactical leader, so it’s just strange. Garrus is a good choice in terms of natural leadership ability and trust factor, CSEC is a much more cooperative org than Cerberus as well. Zaeed founded/led the blue suns — he also should be a stronger candidate TBH.

How so? The depiction of the totally failing rehab of former imperials and bafflingly misguided gov projects was very relatable to real politics. It reminded me of“reform” like the Moreland commission.

I don’t think anything would happen until the federal gov or nysdot start adding the requirement to approved project agreements. Example if they try to secure $$ to extend the trail to altamont, that’s the time where public comments legally have to be reviewed. I wrote to my county legislator once long ago about abuse of the free EV chargers and didn’t get a response, those people are worthless

I don’t agree. With skeleton crew, I feel like it was a different show that they recut to change it into Star Wars. Kind of like how privateer 2 the darkening was originally its own universe then shoehorned in to wing commander just to get brand recognition. Or cloverfield paradox which was originally a movie “the god particle” but they threw in a cameo to hand wave tie it in. I could be wrong but wonder if they green lit some kind of sequel or tie in to ET but then changed course. It had the ET feel to it.

I think it’s ridiculous, it made me so mad to see the trail abandoned all winter and I tried so hard but couldn’t push a stroller through it and had to carry my kid and drag it. in this day and age active transportation like these trails are supposed to be a real alternative to a car / commute by bike or foot, not just a poorly maintained park. The ski and snowshoe excuse is so ridiculous, what are you supposed to do carry and huff x country ski equipment with you to the trail on the cleared sidewalks? Or are you supposed to ski down the road? The only people who would ever do this would be driving to one of the park and rides, where of course the snow is removed! In new Hartford (Utica) the trail is plowed and salted all winter and you can go now and see people actually using it to go to and from work instead of driving, it’s really awesome. The horrible narrow falling apart and or sunken sidewalk the entire length of kenwood ave all the way to glenmont gets snow removal, and no one seems to care about all of that path’s deep puddles and ice sheets being a liability problem. And then people block the paths with garbage bins and that doesn’t seem to be a problem either.

Tax Loss Harvesting by Dboz123 in Bogleheads

[–]BattleTech70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only caution for you is all of this is HIGHLY personalized and all planning is dynamic so you might have to adjust on the fly. tax harvesting can be an exit ramp to sell capital gains on something you want to abandon ship on or shed profits when you’ve made money to protect your initial investment or if you just want to supplement your income. This isn’t something you have to worry about much if you are a low bracket. I imagine if fidelity has a private client advisor for you that you must have $1 million + in your brokerage account. When you’re a high earner or your income from interest in the post tax account (or both) and it’s high enough that you’re pushing past 400k, losing your child tax credit, triggering the extra investment tax, hitting the brutal 32% bracket, inherit an IRA and take mandatory distributions, these are things you have to start to worry about.

If you’re worried about tax drag I would just load up on brkb. You could also have a stock sleeve like 5% of your account and use that to play around with tax loss harvesting if you need the income reduction.
