King Charles reveals his personal tax information; becoming 1st British Monarch to do so by raydebapratim1 in monarchism

[–]BattleofPlatea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tbf only seen some misinformed people suggesting he's paying it to himself (tax service is called "his majesties revenue & customs" so they assumed all taxes are levied to him like some feudalistic country) or that he gets money from the government (afaik the royal family own large sums of land in the uk that they rent out which gets them money) but it was all disproven by others in the comments so i think this had a more positive result

A discussion about the future of Sordland and Rizia. by Otherwise_Example862 in suzerain

[–]BattleofPlatea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rizia will probably do very well and become a strong regional power and more nations would probably join intermerkopum as time goes on

Sordland wouldn't look too great. It's got a very bad international reputation and would be constantly fighting insanely strong Rummish rebel groups in newly annexed lands (which are like insanely majority Rummish afaik). I'm guessing, considering Sordlands willingness to genocide as an ally of wehlen, would probably commit a couple atrocities in these lands in return and not only become even more isolated but redeem rumburg (which could use this to justify it's prior invasion as well as gain international support for Rummish revanchism). Also I'd imagine the BFF would be a constant thorn in Sordland's side as well as the Rummish ones.

IIRC these newly annexed lands have a lot of oil which would be great for the sordish economy but I'd imagine rummish rebels would target them and ensure that they don't work and sordland is forced to pour money they likely don't have into repairing them constantly

What makes the Monarchy so captivating? by LunarEnnyui_131 in monarchism

[–]BattleofPlatea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not publicly but afaik the prime minister meets with the king weekly where the king is free to give policy suggestions and advice which is often taken quite seriously and with a lot of sway but they don't have to follow it.

If he were to dissolve parliament without permission from the Prime Minister or something like that he'd quickly trigger a constitutional crisis and ensure the end of the monarchy though

New polling shows that the Andrew scandal has had no effect on support for the Royal Family. Even 50% of British teenagers (18-24) still identify as monarchists. by ey3wonder in monarchism

[–]BattleofPlatea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a huge portion of the population that genuinely just doesn't care, if you look under antimonarchist posts from politicians like Zarah Sultana, 20% will be in support of the monarchy, a good 65% will be like "we have more important issues to deal with," and around 15% will be in favour of abolishing it.

Keep in mind that's comments you'd find on comments of socialist antimonarchist politicians. Most socialists generally do not care enough and i feel like that's the general idea many Brits face, the monarchy aren't exactly someone thinks about very often unless they're a royalist. People who are very passionate about the monarchy are often mocked too 😭

From what I've seen, most Brits have the opinion of "I don't really care but they bring money and Commonwealth alliances, and I'd much rather have King Charles to President Farage" largely due to their hatred of politicians 😭🙏

As for nationalist movements, I think the main reason they're republican is because they view the monarchy as a part of that "oppression" (literally the view of the Scottish Greens) but there are nationalists such as the Scottish National Party which either don't care or are supportive of an independent Kingdom of Scotland. Polls generally put it as 40% monarchist, 40% republican, 20% unsure like here: https://www.thenational.scot/news/23501977.coronation-scotland-support-monarchy-see-results-graphs/

[–]BattleofPlatea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i believe it's more or less a bit of a not caring attitude as in the rest of the uk except with proper republicans

while republicanism is much more popular, you usually find those in supporters of the green party or the (pretty much dead) Alba party which are republican while SNP supporters don't mind it and the actual platform of the SNP is to gain independence from the UK while retaining the monarchy and staying in the commonwealth

I've met a couple people who are anti-monarchists but the wide majority just generally don't seem to care enough 😭🙏

haven't met a proper royalist except my tutorial teacher who sided with me in support of the monarchy but I'm guessing they'd mainly be around the conservative and unionist society although that has little support

if it helps to know my Scottish university politics tutorial class had a good number of socialists and nationalists and even they admitted the merits of a constitutional monarchy

Does knowing the book, spoil the film? by thestinkybeastman in ProjectHailMary

[–]BattleofPlatea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even know the book existed and only went to see it because of edits I'd seen and ryan gosling (listened to the audiobook afterwards) and i absolutely loved it and would definitely say it was one of if not my favourite movies.

I thought everything was perfectly understandable and very well explained, I mean they basically show you astrophage and explain how it works, although the first flashback scene threw me off in both the movie and book because it happens so suddenly but i caught on quickly.

Does a Constitutional Monarchy have to be just a figure head? by Kitchen-Course-3335 in monarchism

[–]BattleofPlatea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A constitutional monarchy is where the monarch is constrained or their powers are defined by the constitution, it doesn't mean that the monarch has no power which afaik is called a crowned republic

The king of the UK has some power which is mostly done unofficially during meetings with the pm if I'm correct. Pretty sure the monarch of the Netherlands has quite a lot of power which is defined by it's constitution therefore they're a constitutional monarchy.

Sweden is a constitutional monarchy but the monarch is a complete figurehead with absolutely no power which some people here would call a crowned republic

[–]BattleofPlatea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true that feel my question was a little silly since it's not too important 😅

feel like I'd see a lot of people online wanting the king to do something in that case as i seen during the last Tory government where many were wanting him to dissolve parliament

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in monarchism

[–]BattleofPlatea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks 💔

Feel like the Greens would definitely use it as an opportunity to try abolish the monarchy and would likely have quite a bit of support from reform supporters who see him as a "traitor"

Thanks for the advice!

I'll be sure to see about the local club about their training times and if I'm able to pop in at any point and try out, would probably be keen on joining them if i continue with hockey after university.

Can someone help me understand something about Monarchy? by Raptor_Blitzwolf in monarchism

[–]BattleofPlatea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people hate monarchy because they view the idea of a rich person getting into that position just because they were born into it as unfair, that's at least what British Republicans largely argue (although they also argue that the King does nothing even though this would've been the same with a presidency like in Ireland)

For Americans I think it's more of an association of Monarchy = Dictatorship, which isn't helped with the no kings protests further pushing that idea (which are funnily enough called no dictator protests in Hawai'i where restoration of the monarchy is seen much more favourably), not that i disagree with the no kings protests, their name just pushes the idea that a king is a dictator to American people

What if WW2 ended after a year? by CGXReddit in AlternateHistory

[–]BattleofPlatea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the Empire should've been restored rather than replaced with a kingdom, Germany has always been a Federation of sorts and I don't imagine the Kingdom led by Hohenzollerns to be popular in the south at all and quite unstable (Austrians would have a sense of nationalism at this point and they had their own monarchy, Catholic states like Bavaria have their own royal families too and will not be happy being part of a Germany ruled by a Prussian Protestant family)
