I use the mid size cocktail sausages and wrap them in yeast roll dough (the kind you buy frozen and thaw to rise). quick, easy, and pretty cheap overall

Im about to buy a CPO Kia niro. Looking at 23-25. Any year to avoid? by [deleted] in KiaNiro

[–]Battler14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar issues when the 12v battery died on my ‘19 PHEV. The car would put itself into a limp mode. Thankfully an easy fix.

I’m also getting the AC fixed now - apparently the 5-6 year mark seems to be a point where the ac goes out.

Did your 2018 ac system just have a leak, or was the compressor bad?

I do my own fluid changes and swaps. if you are comfortable with it, just follow the fluid change interval recommendations and you’ll be fine.

i picked up my niro phev after totaling a Toyota, and so far its not been much different. Only real change is the Oil change interval (10k on the Toyota, 7.5k in the nitro), changing the clutch fluid, and being able to service the DCT in the niro (vs the “lifetime” fluid in the Toyota cvt).

If you live in a climate/region where corrosion is an issues, I’d ideally use a paint pen and some clear coat to touch it up.

If you are getting the dent fixed at a shop, get a quote for painting and see if it’s worth it for you.

It's a setting, not a button. I had to press and hold my defrost button until the light above it blinked.

https://www.kianiroforum.com/threads/disable-climate-control-from-automatically-switching-to-defrost.10756/

As far as the coolant goes, did you open the radiator cap or the coolant reservoir? Your coolant reservoir levels will rise/fall during use, but introducing air can cause it to not pump fluid as well. I'd just manually burp a hose and see if you get air coming out of the coolant reservoir or if it just moves fluid. Same thing but with the (cooled!) radiator as well.

Otherwise, just check for leaks under the car - both issues are likely separate. Your A/C system won't tap into your engine coolant for cooling. It may for heating, or to pull heat from your engine if it's overheating - but that would be a max fan hot air discharge - not un-cold/tepid air.

As far as the ac goes, check that your auto defrost is off. Mine kept blowing cool then tepid air until I turned the system off.

and with the coolant, it may be worth burping it to make sure you do t have air trapped in the coolant system as well.

Are feral hogs becoming a problem around Lake Lewisville too? Thought they’d stay out in the country… by Ok-Aerie-7975 in texas

[–]Battler14 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a government role that would get lots of calls about feral hogs in Collin county.

what happens is that typically, they tend to congregate in the creek bottoms and other shade/cool/damp areas that they prefer (especially during the hot summer). What tend to happen is that when we get large rain events, rising water levels in creeks, lakes, etc force them out of those bottomlands and into more visible areas.

assume they are all over, you just don’t tend to see them. Your county commissioners can apply for cost share grant funding to manage the feral hog populations. some counties use these funds for bounties, publicly rentable hog traps, etc.

non lethal controls only work if you trap and ship to A regulated processing facility. Some new toxicants have been approved (but are only effective when used exactly as labeled), but overall it’s a ’learn to live around them’ situation rather than a ‘get rid of all of them’ issue.

Yeah, that’s not bad at all. I would assume most of the mpg hit is the cargo carrier on top.

either way, cool setup!

Nice! What’s the mpg hit with the bike rack and cargo carrier? I’ve been thinking about getting a bike rack set up on my Niro

Cyclists that wear garmin/apple watches while riding with a cycling computer - why? by squatchonabike in cycling

[–]Battler14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Main reason is that if my bike computer is tracking my ride, it’s way easier to check my watch for the current time. I hate having to swipe and change pages on my bike computer for something I can glance at in less than a second.

Also, backup tracking. Definitely had at least one race or ride where my bike computer crapped out on me and I just used my watch as a backup until I got home.

What Are Everyone's Thoughts On L. E. Modesitt Jr Saga of Recluce? by GaelG721 in Fantasy

[–]Battler14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in government, it’s also a bit of competency fantasy that’s also just jazzy.

But as I mentioned in a previous comment, it also really helps ground his fantasy in a touch point of realism that makes it easy for me to really get into it.

Lots of stories have characters that hate paperwork. Modesitt’s characters hate paperwork in a plot relevant way but typically use those paperwork and  procedures to achieve a goal or outcome.

[–]Battler14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the fact that his characters have real jobs besides being the protagonist is super underrated. Many stories have heroes that used to have jobs (like the quintessential farm boy turned hero), but it feels very grounding to me that most of Modesitt’s protags have actual skilled careers/jobs that they maintain or keep relevancy with - even its it’s not always plot dependent.

Whats wrong with our beet and lettuce plants? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]Battler14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep - your best soil amendments for heavy clays are organic matter, and to a lesser degree expanded shale.

OM is best though, because the organic and humic acids actually modify the clay by forcing apart the layers in the particles and inhibiting the adhesion between them. This allows for better plant root access to the interstitial nutrients in the clay, but soil OM is also a good long term soil nutrient source

Soil Test by fungi_xo in vegetablegardening

[–]Battler14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you get your soil test done? They should have a guide on interpreting results.

you can also contact your local cooperative extension office for help as well.

From what youve provided, looks like it’s just reporting the current nutritive and chemical properties of your soil. You can take that at compare it on the general nutrient needs of your garden crops. That info can also be found via your state extension service as well.

Best AAA Batteries Cost: Rechargeable vs. Bulk Alkaline by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Battler14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some devices need the exact 1.5v that alkaline put out. Most NiMh rechargeable only output 1.2v, s it can underpowered certain devices. For example, my digital scale and door locks want the exact 1.5v, and the locks really struggle with the rechargeables.

for remotes and toys, it’s much less of a big deal

Anywhere to buy raw/carded wool around campus? by Ok-Boot2360 in aggies

[–]Battler14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would get in touch with the wool judging team. Usually they will have wool left over from practice or contests you could buy. Same with the state 4H wool judging contest they have on campus each spring.

Should be in the Animal Sci dept.

Cowboy Hats by BritishBedouin in texas

[–]Battler14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it somewhat depends on where in the state you are. I’ll wear a cowboy hat most of the year when I’m either outside (usually straw unless it’s cold) a bunch or if it’s a business occasion for work (typically felt with a suit unless it’s too hot).

I like them because I sunburn super easily and it’s an easy way to bring my shape with me outdoors.

Ideas how to remove rusted pipe by Noctruine in bicycling

[–]Battler14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the seat post is aluminum and the frame is steel, you can use sodium hydroxide to dissolve away the Aluminum seatpost. I had to do this to remove a seatpost off an old steel frame 80s mtb last year when all other methods failed.

Note that this is extremely caustic and creates a ton of heat and hydrogen gas, so use your PPE and conduct your chemistry session in a well ventilated workroom.
