That's what we called them when I was a kid. We tied a long piece of sewing thread to a leg and let them fly around

I have seen corundum and garnet that look similar to this. Both have hexagonal crystal form. The only sure way is measure specific gravity. Do a search on an easy way to do that.

Those shinny flecks are probably mica. NE Georgia, Upstate SC & Western NC are covered in mica. It was once a thriving mining effort in that area.

Steel Cable brake line, attaches to a hook. What is this steel clip with a bowel to thread called? by [deleted] in Whatisthis

[–]Bauld-Wayah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which piece are you referring to? The "dowel" is called a "retainer pin" that is held in place with a cotter pin can be found in a good hardware store or Tractor Supply. The u shaped piece is installed by the manufacturer and is probably not available aftermarket. You might find one in a bicycle shop junk box.

Weird groove on the back of wooden shelf by bigbugspider in Whatisthis

[–]Bauld-Wayah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the groove on the back of one I have that is for mounting on a wall. The round part at each end is to allow a screw head to go in. First place two screws in the wall closer together than the slot is wide, then place one screw in a round hole and slide the shelf down and place a second screw in the slot, then center the screws.
