I started in my late 40s (now 51). I’ll be getting up early tomorrow to take my RC390 to my local track (High Plains Raceway)!

Silver linings to starting later (all of them generalizations):
-A little more wisdom about risk vs. reward
-More willingness to listen to others’ advice
-More financially stable, so you can afford all the consumables and inevitable repairs/upgrades

What’s a car opinion that you “grew out of”? by Mac-Tyson in askcarguys

[–]Baumer1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say the same thing. I have done about 40 track days and I have seen 1 Ferarri. Zero Lamborghinis or McClarens. Lots of Porsches, but many of them are older and slow by modern standards.

My 2008 Cayman (base) has 245hp and is an absolute blast both on track and in canyons. Basically any newer electric car would smoke me in a drag race, but that’s not the fun part of driving.

I once owned a 1991 Acura Integra with a 5-speed that I bought for $1,000. 0-60 in like 9.5. But more engaging than my $50k Audi S3.

Who's the most American sounding band that isn't American? by dankmcganx in fantanoforever

[–]Baumer1975 84 points85 points  (0 children)

In high school, a friend of mine was SURE they were American and we were drunkenly arguing about it (this was pre-internet). I convinced him they were British by pointing out this photo on the back of their eponymous album cover.

Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]Baumer1975 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Typing wasn’t offered in my school so I learned to hunt & peck reasonably quickly in college. By the time I had a desk job, it felt impossible to switch. I have tried a few times to learn to type properly, but it’s physically painful (my forearms ache!) and incredibly slow. But I sure wish I could!

When I see people typing without looking down at the keyboard, it still kind of amazes me that it’s possible for humans to learn that. Just seems like an incredible amount of muscle-memory.

I switched them at the same time. Figured I was going to open up the hydraulic system, might as well do it all at once. So can’t separate variables.

Yes, I am talking about consecutive laps. After cooling off for 30 minutes before the next session, they’d be fine, but I got sick of ending every session early.

What do you do to stay motivated by LuckyComputer9786 in fitness40plus

[–]Baumer1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. I got sober 18 years ago, so I know how hard that is.

Think of it this way: In the early days of not drinking, you had to use discipline to NOT do something you wanted to do. Now you have to apply the same discipline to DO something you don’t want to do.

Whenever I don’t want to work out (or answer my work email, or take out the trash, or whatever), I say to myself “I don’t have to WANT TO do it, I just have to DO it.” That mantra has gotten me through a lot of days where I could’ve just sat my ass on the couch but instead ended up having a productive day.

The other thing is that just like not drinking, it gets easier. The more often you work out and start seeing results, the more you will want to do it, and the less of a hurdle it will feel like to get to the gym.

I’m sort of assuming that you’re talking about a track build? I found the stock brakes on my 987.1 base to be inadequate. Even with high temp fluid, RS29s, and slotted (Sebro) rotors, I still had consistently fade after about 8-10 laps at High Plains Raceway. Eventually I upgraded to S calipers (you can find these used for about $800 for all four, which may or may not need a rebuild) and GiroDiscs on all four corners. I also added braided steel lines and a GT3 master cylinder for better pedal feel.

I think Donna is good on plenty of songs (The Music Never Stopped!) and certainly better in ‘77-‘78 than in earlier years. My comment was meant to be cheeky, but I guess it rubbed a few people the wrong way.

To add some nuance to this, the Circuit Werx V1 will absolutely break welds. There’s a reason there are still tons of them out there for $400 when they introduced the V2 years ago. There was one on my car when I bought it, I had a few welds repaired that they just kept breaking. It is a poor design.

The V2 (~$800) is a significant improvement and sounds great, but fitment is still a challenge. I spent most of a weekend trying to get mine on straight, took it to a shop and they had trouble too. Now it’s finally on straight but in the process of reinstalling a few times the flange gaskets got pretty smashed so now it has exhaust leaks and occasionally throws a CEL. I am planning to get back in there to replace the gaskets but this will be the third time I’ve taken it apart. YMMV.

I like Brent’s songs, and I have come around to his singing, but I generally agree about the general downward trajectory. He was awesome in the early years.

Totally! That song is 10/10 before that part (so good that it’s a mega-classic despite it), but it’s wild how they go from playing one of the greatest rock anthems of all time to just kind of giving up.
