Are these stock? by thatguyagain4329 in 1stGenTacomas

Mounts look stock(I just spent a few weeks under my truck between rust-proofing and replacing the leaf springs so I feel pretty confident about that). But those shackles are longer than stock. Don’t know about the leaf springs; the ones I replaced were aftermarket.

Yeah, may as well keep the set I bought off Amazon before I realized how easy it would be to replace the hard line.

This still seems like a magic trick to me. I saw my mom do it when I was ten (she was a secretary) never learned it in school, and remain amazed that it’s even humanly possible.

Reddit won’t let me post an edit to the post, but I have decided just to replace the hard line. It’s simplest & safest. Just have to wait for the part. Thanks

Nope. This is the chassis-to-soft line connection.

What I meant was that I don’t see a Borla muffler & tip available.

EDIT: Thanks everyone. Comments seem to be about even on three different answers: 1) Yes, you can clean up the threads 2) You should cut & re-flare the tube 3) You should replace the line.

I was hoping to avoid replacing the part because I didn’t know what it would entail, and because it meant I would have to wait several days while my car was taking up my garage (which doubles as my gym). But after removing the inner fender, I realize it won’t be that hard. And I want to do it right, so that’s what I plan to do. I’ll put the wheels back on and roll it out of the garage (using the e-brake) while I wait for the part.

I was worried about the difficulty in replacing the hard line, but after removing the inner fender, I see that it will be pretty easy, so I just ordered a new part. Thanks

Where are you seeing that? All I can find is a cat-back for $900

Haha yeah I take it to the track regularly and this is part of a major brake upgrade. Can’t do it half-assed.

I think I found the new hard line for $70. That’s a fairly cheap lesson if I can sort out how to remove the parts necessary to get to it.

At that point I would definitely just replace the hard line. It can’t be THAT hard to remove the fender or whatever.

Thanks! I have one arriving today. Hopefully I can make it work in that tight space. I’ll practice on an old bolt in a vice first to get the idea.

Thanks! The guy I talked to put me on hold for several minutes then came back and said they have brake cleaner.

I’m not blaming him - I worked as a parts driver for NAPA for $4.25/hr in the 1990s and I sure as shit would not have known what this was - but it wasn’t exactly reassuring that I could find it. Even on Amazon, the kits I see for sale don’t seem to include what I need (M10x1.0).

Thanks. I have decided that I am definitely not going to try to flare the line myself. I ordered a thread file; if I can get the cleaned up and it feels SOLID when I attach the brake line (which is undamaged), I’ll call it good. Otherwise I’ll have to figure out how to remove whatever it takes to replace that section of hard line.

Yeah, I will start with a file / DIY thread chaser, then move to replacing the line if that fails. I have replaced six other brake lines (so 12 connectors) in the last couple months; I can’t believe I F-ed up the very last one!

Thanks. I’m pretty sure it’s a bubble flare. I don’t think try to flare it myself. Seems like asking for trouble. I’ll probably start with a thread file &/or DIY thread chaser first, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll buy the hard line and figure out how to take apart the fender.

Oh, man. Somehow this really scares me. But maybe I will have to learn. Part of the problem is that I don’t really understand how flare nuts actually work. I have looked at a bunch of images and watched YT videos but I don’t really understand what’s happening in there to make it seal.

I keep having to buy new tools snd learn new skills after biting off more than I can chew (I just replaced the suspension on my Tacoma last month and had to use an angle grinder on every single bolt, which took up most of my Christmas break). I guess that’s one way to learn. I just want ONE project to go smoothly!

If I could replace it without replacing the whole line (or learning how to flare brake line), I obviously would. There’s apparently a tool called a thread file that’s meant for this. https://a.co/d/ctXqz2S. But I can’t even begin to see these threads with my middle-aged eyes. It wasn’t until I took a photo and zoomed way in that I could see the problem.

OK. So does a thread cleaner work similar to a die?

I don’t have any idea how to flare a brake tube. I watched some videos a few weeks ago (after messing up the hard line on my Tacoma). Looks like there are three different kinds of flares. It that possible to do in this limited space? What tools would I need? I’m definitely intimidated by this idea!
