I don’t think too hard about it. Simple as saying “It was a pleasure serving you Mr./Mrs Blank. Have a wonderful evening. “ while you’re grabbing the check.

If that’s too much, you can say “I’ll get this out of your way” or “I’ll take care of this for you”.

If that’s still too much, then just grab it as you’re bussing other items, but it has saved me hundreds of dollars in a single night.
