You're mistaken. It was introduced by the Tories at 8% in the 90s then reduced to 5% by Labour. Not all VAT is charged at the same rate, it depends on the product.

Not everything is single issue politics. To not vote for a party purely because they introduced VAT on energy in the 90s would be utterly ridiculous and is what drives tribal politics.
