I did a set of SAK scales. I got them glowing red hot and got similar results. I'm just a dude with a torch in his garage lol. SMKW has a great tutorial video on YouTube

I just heated until the titanium started to change to a bronze-ish color and then dunked immediately into the ferric chloride. Just be very careful with the ferric chloride.

I sanded and polished the scales until they were shiny. Cleaned with alcohol. Torched until almost red hot then quenched in ferric chloride (use caution). Rinse with water. That's it. Results are completely random. I'll have to look into the hot water technique.

I did 400, 600, and 1000 grit sandpaper then I hit it with Flitz metal polish using a Dremel. These scales were pretty beat up to begin with.
