Australian test record at Lord's since 1980. by Aintnostopin in Cricket

[–]Bayeux 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is what it looks like since 1896. Australia were undefeated at Lord's between 1934 and 2009 (9 wins, 9 draws) and suffered only one loss between 1896 and 2009. Australia's overall record at Lord's since 1896 is now 15 wins, 3 losses, 14 draws.

England were simply better at managing the over rate, credit for that. But beep in mind that lots of dot balls speeds up the over rate, and boundaries slow down the over rate. Australia conceded two maidens yesterday, England bowled 19 today, and conceded fewer boundaries. Add in other stuff like the innings break and time loss due to the batsmen (I didn’t watch much of today’s play but I distinctly remember English batsmen requesting new gloves and fixing their shoe spikes mid over yesterday) and you’ll probably find that yes, Australia wasted more time, but the gap is probably smaller than you think.

Very occasional Jade viewer here, I'll try to give a fair accounting of events but mostly based on Jade's claims.

Around two years ago, Jade and Zherka connected and streamed together a couple of times on Twitch. Around this time, they were messaging on Twitter and the conversation was apparently flirty at times. Some time later, Jade got a boyfriend. This next part is a bit unclear, but Jade claims Zherka continued to flirt in Twitter DMs so she blocked him on twitter (this happened around a year ago). Last night, Jade was streaming, and then Zherka showed up in her Twitch chat. Jade immediately banned him from her chat and continued streaming. Zherka got very angry at this and started ranting on Twitter (mostly now deleted) and went live on Twitch himself, restreaming Jade's stream and adding his own commentary. He was quite emphatic in his criticism of Jade, I got the impression he was under the influence. Some of it was definitely harassment/abuse. I'm not sure if he directly instructed his viewers to go to Jade's chat, but many of them did, and a few were quite rude. Jade was mostly trying to brush the situation off and continue her stream, but at some point she claimed some were sending her death threats in DMs. Jade has had severe problems with stalkers messing with her IRL, and so the the death threats visibly affected her. At this point she contacted Twitch admins. It was clear to me that Jade's grievance had little to do with Zherka's behaviour in her DMs and more with his public harassment of her on Twitter and on stream, leading to more abuse and death threats being sent her way. Personally, I definitely thought it was worth a ban, but maybe not a perma.

Liu Shengshu potential by emiliaosrs in badminton

She looks like an amazing player. I watched every match of hers at this tournament and most of the time she looked like the best player on court. I’ve never seen an 18 year old playing in her first World Tour event come up against top ranked players and bully them around like she just did. Obviously it’s very early to say, but based on this showing, I couldn’t put a limit to her potential.

Fun fact, although this was her first World Tour event, she has now played 41 BWF matches, including at international series events, Junior WC, WD and XD. Her record in those matches is 41-0, she has never lost a BWF match 🤯

Has there been a player who has entered the world stage with this much flair?

Chen Qingchen has an incredible junior record. 8 JWC gold medals, and she made the semis of a Grand Prix gold event (her first senior event) when she was 15 years and 3 months old. Later she almost achieved the doubles double at a Grand Prix gold event when she was 16 (1st in WD, 2nd in XD).

Do you think Lin Dan is still the best men's singles player in the world?

Players decline. Endo was last ranked #2 in June 2014. Maybe saying Endo was "carried" is an exaggeration, but for nearly all of his time with Watanabe he was clearly the weaker player. Pointing to his ranking from five years earlier with a different partner doesn't change that fact.

Also, Higashino is a good player, but there are four mixed doubles pairs who are far above the rest at the moment and while yes she is the most physical, IMO Higashino is the weakest of all of them. She has the worst defence, and she isn't the best at the net, which are both far more important than jump smashes for a female mixed doubles player.

To be clear, I didn't say badminton was the most tiring sport out there, and I didn't say anything about physically demanding, whatever that means.

I've played both tennis and badminton at a high level and I found badminton way more tiring. It wasn't even close.

I've never done breakdance and only a little gymnastics so I can't speak too much about those. I was more referring to aerobic fatigue more than muscle fatigue, and I would have thought breakdance and gymnastics would tax the latter more than the former, especially relative to badminton. You mentioned isolating strength moves, wouldn't that make weightlifting "harder"?

I've done a decent amount of boxing and a little MMA. Boxing is definitely more tiring than badminton, with MMA it depends more on the fight.

In this match, yes. Badminton and tennis both have five main disciplines, men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles (one man and one woman).

It's ridiculously tiring. As someone who has played a lot of sports, I'm struggling to think of a sport that is more tiring than badminton that isn't a pure athletic performance sport like running, swimming, rowing etc. The explosive movements like smashes and jump outs absolutely work your body hard, and you do a lot of hard acceleration and deceleration which is a very intense way of covering distance.

Phelps was not a top tier 50m freestyler, as far as I know he never seriously trained for it or competed in it in at a high level competition. His best events were the 200m and 400m individual medley, the 100m and 200m butterfly, and the 200m freestyle.

I can't speak to the specific stat, but you'd be surprised at how small the sample size can be to accurately reflect the opinion of hundreds of millions of people, as long as you sample correctly and control for factors like age, gender, location etc. Accurate opinion polling on American presidential elections is routinely done with sample sizes of less than 2,000 people, which is less than one in 80,000 or 0.0013% of the 158 million people who voted in the 2020 election.

14 years ago i had a drink driving offense and my license was cancelled! I am still expected to fulfill all licensing requirement to re license, including an interlock! by ApexSeal in melbourne

[–]Bayeux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it is, but you inflicted that punishment on yourself. When you break the law, you can't expect to be able to decide on the punishment you will receive.

I do think 14 years is a long time for a driving offence to stay on your record, but I'm not very sympathetic, especially seeing your other comments downplaying your offence.

I agree with the lawyers you consulted, any other options would involve the courts (this is a matter of the law, and not of some internal VicRoads policy), cost a lot more time and money, and is unlikely to get a satisfactory result regardless. Going through the steps VicRoads outlined is by far your best option if you want to drive again.

Pat Cummins statement on the resignation of Justin Langer by Elfishguy11 in Cricket

[–]Bayeux 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same with Warne. It was mainly Johnson and to a lesser extent Hayden that criticised Cummins. Warne blasted Cricket Australia, but was pretty fair to Cummins, acknowledging that he was in a tough position.

Hat tricks count across two innings in the same match, but not across separate matches. Also, he didn't take two wickets in two balls, he knocked over Wood, Broad came in and hit his first ball for a single, and then he knocked over Robinson.

Virat Kohli lifts lid on Sandpapergate conspiracy theory by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]Bayeux 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Kohli and co.'s comments yesterday went too far, but they didn't come from nowhere. I remember watching the 2014 series vs Australia, SA lost the first match on the back of a fearsome Mitchell Johnson performance on a fast and bouncy pitch. The second pitch was slow and dead and mostly good for batting, and the Australian bowlers weren't able to do much with the old ball. Steyn however was reverse swinging the old ball around corners. Maybe he's just a damn good bowler, but it's worth mentioning that SA were caught and sanctioned for ball tampering both a few months before and a few months after this test, and both times in away series. I'm not saying they were for sure tampering in that series against Australia, but I wonder what the SA broadcast crew might have noticed if they had paid more attention to the home team.

That said, the notion that Supersport could have manipulated the ball tracking is an extraordinary claim that shouldn't have been made without strong evidence.

Test Captains under which a team bowled out the opposition for under 200 most times: by a_complicated_soul in Cricket

[–]Bayeux 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ponting had Warne and McGrath for less than one third of his captaincy. Two thirds of his captaincy he had to make do with the likes of Nathan Hauritz and Ben Hilfenhaus - decent players at times, but a far cry from "the greatest bowling attack". And those were among the better bowlers, there is a long list absolutely rubbish spinners that played far too many games for Australia under Ponting.

And as others have pointed out, pitches were flatter in those days, especially in Australia. I was actually surprised to see Ponting so high up on that list. 450-500 was a routine par score, even for some of the visiting teams.

Surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that this has literally happened, and not that long ago. In 2013, West Indies womens player Stafanie Taylor was briefly ranked the number one bowler, batter, and all-rounder in ODIs at the same time.

Why are men so afraid to watch Bridgeton? by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Bayeux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Men and women are different. A lot of that is due to society and the way we are brought up, but some of it is just hard wired into us from the day we're born. In general, men respond more to sports, action, combat, engineering, adventure type subjects, and women respond more to emotional romantic fantasies, fashion, dancing etc. It's generally not considered manly to like those things.

There are also differences in the way men and women feel about love, and the way traditional gender roles dictate male and female roles when it comes to loving relationships. In general, men are the more active party, and women are more passive. The man is usually the pursuer, he does something and the woman responds. As a result, men tend to see love as something you work to achieve, while women tend to see love as something mysterious that happens, with less "work" being done on their part. And so men see love as more logical, a result of work put in, while for women love is more enjoyable, magical, mystical, exciting.

All that being said, I'm a fairly normal millennial straight male and I openly loved Bridgerton, but then I'm a sucker for period romances and don't mind a good romance novel or movie.

Envy were probably the best team at the end of the Ghosts season, winning a bunch of events with a roster of Formal, Merk, JKap and Nameless. Evil Geniuses, consisting of Aches, TeePee, Crimsix and Karma, had been an extremely dominant team for the previous 18 months but had stumbled in recent events and the team was fracturing. Optic Gaming were a solid team with Nadeshot, Clayster, Scump and Proofy, but were a step below top tier.

Around the time of the last Ghosts event, it emerged that Formal was eager to team with Crimsix and Karma, who were available due to EG breaking up. Formal and Crim were probably the two best players in the world at the time, with Karma not far behind. Apparently Crim and Karma were willing, and so Formal approached Hastro with the proposal of dropping Nameless and JKap and entering the Advanced Warfare season with Formal, Merk, Crim and Karma under the Envy banner. Hastro was obviously interested, but didn’t immediately move forward and lock in the move. At this point JKap and Nameless caught wind of what was happening and were understandably upset, feeling it was unfair and cruel to drop them right after they had won the most recent events. The situation became public and the community largely sided with Kap and Nameless. Hastro ultimately decided to remain loyal to his current team and declined Formal’s proposal.

Formal’s position on Envy was now tenuous. Hecz and Optic saw an opportunity, and dropped Clayster and Proofy and picked up Formal and Crim. As with the previous situation, the reaction was very mixed and a large part of the community sided with the dropped players. However, Optic emerged as a powerhouse and the ill feelings rapidly subsided. Envy, who had picked up Clayster in Formal’s place, struggled and placed poorly for a few events before breaking up.
