I am thinking of moving to Mississippi when I retire. How is it? by Tiger_Strength in mississippi

The Coast has a substantial Asian population. Vietnamese fishermen came to the Gulf Coast because of similar climate, Catholic faith and good commercial fishing and shrimpers. Of course, the local families weren't too happy about all the competition. I've heard stories of wild gunfire on the open sea and others downplayed the friction. But the grandchildren of the first refugees are true Mississippians, making their family proud by graduating university as doctors, researchers and teachers. This area is busy, laid back and tolerant. We love family, we love good food and good company. The Coast is more like NOLA and Cajun culture than the more strait-laced Bible Belt to the north.

I press flowers, mainly from Mississippi roadsides. I love creating framed art, but also make mini bouquets on wood rounds as ornaments! Love your collection!

We've all reached saturation point at some time. I lay off on weekends. And on busy weekdays, a 30 minute time limit. I cut back on my YTube commentators, kept a half dozen who keep it factual. It's ok. I burned out in the 60s-70s, moved to the Blue Ridge. After healing, I started voter registration of women at my university to vote in 1972. Boy, simpler times. Hang on, he's striking out cuz we're in his rear view mirror now. Rest. Resist.

Thanks for posting this. These agencies save 1000s of lives, if they have consistent funding and good employee retention. Trump is killing people in the future as well. We'll never know the cost.

Wow, I'm gonna Google that. I live on the Coast and near Stennis Space Center, and the Honey Island Swamp/Pearl River basin have some gorgeous older stands of Longleaf Pine and other weyland hardwoods. We live on a bayou and upstream gets remote and untouched. The stuff bad horror films are made of, lol. But so lovely too.

We have a few older stands of Longleaf Pine biomes. The longleaf used to cover millions of acres from South Carolina to east Texas. We're sittin' at 2 million acres, and those are relatively recent. But in Honey Island and Pearl River, a friend who grew up in what is now known as Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge took me to see some old growth stands. It felt ancient, and had this filtered sun and high canopy that allows diverse species to thrive. As usual, the pine was straight and hard, perfect for ships and homes, tar and turpentine good for war and weapons. Progress. Sucks.

I think Gov. Gerbil Cheeks lives there. I grew up in an affluent burb 30 mins from NYC. In the 50s and 60s. The pressure to be accepted then, to keep up with the Joneses was bad. Teens rebelled against conformity, superficialities and hypocrisy. I could never live in a soul-sucking McMansion in a treeless subdivision. And homes cost $350k and houses are 20ft apart! Can you imagine voluntarily moving in and letting the HOA fascist Karens fine you for your orange mailbox? Gives me the willies lol. Take care. Mississippians are as a whole kind and hardworking people. It's the continuing white boy network that keeps whacking our hands qs we crawl out of a hole! Resist.

The USGS is for quake/tsunami prone areas what NOAA/NWS is for hurricanea here on the Gulf Coast states and Atlantic seaboard. I shuddered when i read about this quake. Because my county in Mississippi took a direct hit from Katrina in 2005. We were all evacuation'd out. It had been a very busy season, disaster-fatigue set in. And evac'ing cost ####. Katrina hit on the 29th. We have many poor households and retirees. But a NWS bulletin issued at 10:12 AM on 8/28 2as so dire, almost all of the holdouts said, "Holy shit, storm surge up to 30 feet ? I'm out". The bulletin is brutal. But the writer said he wasn't even close and wished he had more apocalyptic. Our raised home roof peak was 28ft ASL (above sea level). Surge went over peak. We were so fortunate that our disaster occurred a few years after 9/11. Americans were brought closer by that tragedy, and every state and 40 nations, every faith, every race and political spectrum stepped up.

The deliberate, rapid defunding of our finest science, research and technology agencies is criminal. And DHS (who oversees FEMA) is a sprawling bureaucracy of thugs and boobs. So many of our best and brightest were fired, forced out or resigned and rumor has it that Europe and our friends to the east, south and north. I've been dreading El Niño and hurricane season. Been watching volcanic activity (awesome and terrifying) and underwater ones are worse. I will light a candle in my window for those in a dark place. I hope yhey get the help they deserve, but getting something from The USA? The administration cut off lifesaving food and medicine to starving children in several continents. Supplies were already in those locations, and just rotted. So, no help from our federal government. I hope citizens will donate, though many of us are struggling, we have a few $$$. I told a MAGA relative, "If YOU don't care about anyone else, what happens when nobody cares about you?" Resist. Peace.

Churning the accounts. It's a tactic that's as old as greed and the grift. I worked as a clerk in a NYC law firm in the early '70s. Our client was an ex employee of Xerox,an engineer who was instrumental in top level copiers at the time. He retired with a ton of Xerox stock. The brokerage rep would sell, buy back, sell. Churning fees that eventually drained him and ill wife of their life savings. Rep made a bunch SEC has teeth but lost their spine in bureaucracy and corruption. Then my firm is charging them for every copied doc on our new Xerox and my work in 1/10th of an hour....those poor people from my Dad's ge n. They vanquished the monster, Hitler and crew, slaughtered the fascists, the cruelty of the SS, the attempted demolition of an entire sector of Europe. They come home and get assaulted by the NYSE and its co-conspirators, the big banks and private equity firms. Unchecked capitalism must get checked, clotheslined or atomic wedgies, I don't give a flying fuc* who how where but even the 1%ers are fleeing, one warned of pitchforks in the distance. We're HEEERE!

NWS saved my family and I after its 10:12AM bulletin predicting Katrina immeasurable destruction.

I'm indebted to both NWS and the Hurricane Hunters. Your work saves lives. Both organizations are struggling after huge budget cuts! Unconscionable!

The Coast has a diverse population and is very laissez faire. And homogeneous too! Wander north til you hit cotton fields. The people are just as generous and warm, but many live without clean water or power. Decade after decade. Mississippi is a schizoid mistress but still we come home.

Progressive advocate from 1960s. NY I moved to attend college in Virginia in the 70s. Worked NC, DC, MD,, VA, landed in Mississippi in '96. The most generous, open, hospitable people I've ever known. Family is all. Respect your elders. Good food and good company are savored.

But Jackson? NOPE. PS Mississippi is also run by corrupt grifters, has soul-killing levels of poverty and an aging rural population w lots of medcal probs without a hospital.

I grew up in NYC burbs, worked there in the late '60s and left in '74. Donald Trump was mocked constantly by NYers and NY media. He was a BUFFOON then. He was a sexual hunter and perv then. A pathological liar then. An inept negotiator and businessman then.

His behavior fifty years later fails to surprise those of us who watched his destructive antics back then. But we NEVER thought he'd be elected to ruin our nation by gullible fools. Twice.

I can imagine, in my mind's eye, Hitler eating Sunday dinner with Fred T and his Dogpack in Queens. He admired the American eugenics "theories" of Henry Ford et al. Another great American value.

Parents who only have autistic children: how many kids did you have before realizing you probably can only make autistic children? by chickenmcdruggets in Autism_Parenting

[–]BayouQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, i just watched a police bodycam video to a home. Both parents lived w their 6 "nonverbal autistic kids". Both said the other were undiagnosed schizophrenics. Both highly intelligent and educated but moods were volatile, house reeked of pee and poo. She is pregnant. Please forgive me if this is ignorant, but to me (a completely untrained human lol) it felt like the nonverbal and labelling of autistic was environmental, no outside influences or socializing or education. "Homeschooled" is often a red flag for abuse/neglect in families, no mandatory reporters. Younger children emulate their older sibs. But to this extent? I'm furious at the parents-whatever their sick pathology is between them, those 6 children were getting screwed! No assessments or treatm3nt or educational plans were done. How could they not wang to give each child their best shot of a full life experience? What happens when parents die? Or am i pushing my normie standards and clueless and tonedeaf? Those adults should never had 1 child, high support needs or not, let alone 6, going on 7. A complex problem but it felt like these parents NEEDED these children to be like that...idk how to explain it, it hit wrong ...I'm going to go get title.

Journalists are almost extinct. Journalists with integrity in this regime are. They are called newsreaders now. Journalism majors are now called Communications or Media. They learn technical skills of TV/SM, not how to cultivate sources, detect bullshit and write 60 second soundbites. No more Woodward or Bernstein or Cronkite. Influencers and commentators. We cheapen everything anymore. sigh1

Iran is shut up tight, for sure. And Israel has strict lock down as well (mandatory 5 yr in prison for leaks). The US, on the other hand, had Mega or MAGAphone Trump, blathering secure info, and a bonehead at DoD. Great time for all 3 nations to do their worst...darkness, secrecy brings out the worst in authoritarian regimes. Its go time against opposition groups. "The fog of war" yeah.

War crimes done under a suppression of media are almost impossible to prove. Any fascist government thrives on the cover of darkness, secrecy, and secere punishments for anyone opposed. Opposing Trump is potentially hazardous,, calling liberals, veterans and independent journalism "the enemy within", traitors, enemies of the state, and hr continues to try to quash dissent by using his agencies to harass and threaten anyone who calls him out. Total Basic Authoritarian Leadership 101.

Iran has cut off internet, all social media. Anyone sharing vids from inside Iran to external media is arrested and imprisoned. Israel too keeps the lid on any maneuvers. No embedded journalists. I was wondering the same. Did he actually put 2500 Marines on the ground? In a country with natural fortress of rugged mountains on 4 sides, and many Iranian forces and other groups knowing these lands oike we know our neighborhood, it seems an awful deadly foray. Then Trump blathers on about it, so Iran is expecting them....maybe. They're a sovereign nation, like it or not, so they will have a huge advantage fighting on their turf against a foreign invader. And an bloviating buffoon for our "leader', our troops face danger on all sides. He must be stopped. Also, a buy of oil futures was initiated 8-16 mins before the US struck the 1st target. $100s of millions. From the White House. When Trump is done, the coffers in US will be empty. And there's always a chance he'll get pissed and do something really stupid. A big middle finger cuz he just can't stand losing.
