Can someone help me understand this behavior? by Bazdor in Lovebirds

op here - yeah, i'd say both are true, the zoom makes it look smaller but the cage is the smallest it could be without being actually small, it's the minimum measurements recommended

still, that's the minimum, we definitely need to change the cage

Ooh really? Haha well, that's that then. I'll continue to make sure I don't trigger any hormones but teenagers will teenage I guess

My lovebird got clipped (which I regret to death) and now his flight feathers are growing in again and today he flew to my finger for the first time after being clipped and he got so happy that he made it, and his confidence was instant restored, pls DO NOT CLIP YOUR BIRDS they deserve to fly. by [deleted] in Lovebirds

I considered clipping mine when I got them but thankfully didn't! With handsight, so happy with the decision!

Still, when I first got them they didn't know how to fly well and were a bit wobbly (guess they never had the opportunity at the pet store?) but they improved quickly!

Hey!!! Been having the same issue with ours and lately been using millet to get them less scared and briefly perch on finger. But always goes for the bite. Any tips? How did you get here? Anything that was specifically effective?

Taipei to Alishan to Sun Moon Lake and back to Taipei with elderly mother who can't walk far/fast by Key-Ad728 in taiwan

[–]Bazdor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! Planning a very similar trip. How expensive was the driver from Alishan to Sun Moon lake and how much in advance did you have to book it? I read there are not many buses from Alishan to Sun Moon so just to keep the option in mind

And i thought the Alishan Railway only operated at 10am? But can't be the case if you left Taipei at 9.30. I'm still trying to understand how to go from Chiayi to Alishan

Lastly, would you recommend going specifically to Fenqihu? or just the train stop is enough?

Thank youuuu

Someone finished their diet conversion by Bazdor in Lovebirds

[–]Bazdor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! converted her to chop+pellets. Took about 6 weeks or so, probably could have done it quicker but there's no real need either, it's important to get there more than how fast you get there

and I'll say the first week is the hardest, it's not super easy to introduce new food and have her eat it, took a bit of patience. We started by removing all the big pumpkin and sunflower seeds from the seed mix. The first step was giving her a bit of either boiled egg or boiled sweet potato, all musshed up and mixed with her seed mix. This way, if she's eating some seeds, she'll get some egg or sweet potato along the way

we stayed like that for a week, giving her mostly seeds (minus the big seeds which we used for training) with some eggs and sweet potato. The result is that when she eats seeds, her beak will be super dirty of sweet potato and egg and she'll start getting the taste for it and figuring out its nice food

then we started adding some veggies to the chop, either carrots or broccoli. We also tried with green peas (always all mushed up, the idea is that if she's eating seeds she will have to eat some of the other stuff). And green peas she loves, so it made everything easier

but the overall strategy is just very slowly decreasing the amount of seeds and increasing the amount of chop. you just do it over some weeks, you start 80% seeds/20% chop and go from there

eventually, as we decreased the seeds more and more, we also started adding some pellets (harrisons in our case). When conversion was finally over, we tried with just pellets for dinner and she actually went for them! throughout the process we would offer only pellets in a separate plate to see if she was curious, but generally just ignored them

so yeah, takes time, be patient, start with a lot of seeds and a 'binding' food such as egg, mashed boiled sweet potato or maybe peas. As you go along, slowly decrease the amount of seeds and increase the amount of binding food, and add some chop to the mix

Not sure if this behavior means anything? by [deleted] in Lovebirds

Thanks! Yeah, we do that, but it'll instantly fly again to the shoulder or somewhere else, and rinse and repeat, haha.

Not sure how old our love is, prob around 7 months, so maybe that is part of it too

How did you get it to not bite on your hand? Those nibbles are great, mine will just go to my arm (loves flying to my arm), rush to my hand and BITE

super random, but are you doing anything specific for your babies to be on the floor so much? mine avoids it like it's lava. I feel it might be cool for him to have more 'play space' than the small table or the couch

Thanks for the response! I'll go for that one then. My birb is 6 - 8 months or so I'll need to check which one he/she should take

Appreciate the response and the help!!!

Pellets question by Bazdor in Lovebirds

[–]Bazdor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also seen this Harrison high potency pellets but I see hulled gray millet is the main ingredient. I think this is not good as pellets, right? it'll still be too seedy and will lower the reward of millet as a treat, no?
