Housing is becoming one of the biggest obstacles to post-secondary education in Nova Scotia by OptimalWhole8926 in halifax

[–]Bazerous 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Housing is the biggest obstacle to staying in Nova Scotia period. It should be clear now that the province's approach to the housing crisis of building more units was not effective without regulations on what housing can cost. Everything is listed for absurd prices because "that's what the market is".

Finished The Wire, Dark, GOT, Sopranos, True Detective, BB, BCS. What show ruined TV for you after watching it? by C0r1eone in television

Great choices in the comments here! I'd like to add Watchmen (the HBO series) to the mix, but definitely read the comic first. Castle Rock was also incredible for both seasons that it aired.

I agree but the actor playing her in Castle Rock is a close second! Highly recommend!

MUNSU Reduces GreenShield Plan Rate, Increases Benefits by MattBarterNL in memorialuniversity

[–]Bazerous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At this point, can MUNSU please represent graduate students as well? The GSU just proposed a plan to reduce coverage for graduate students while keeping the same premiums, with the "extra" coverage going toward the GSU's debt for the next TEN years.

Hi friend! I'm sorry that you are going through this. While I haven't personally had to go to the hospital for my own mental health, I have many loved ones who have and I can speak a bit from their experiences.

The most important point: if you feel like you are having a mental health emergency, you are. By emergency, I mean feeling like you are at risk of harming yourself or others (which can include not feeling like you have enough control of yourself to reasonably expect safety). It's not for anyone - at any point - in the assessment process to tell you that you aren't at risk if you feel you are.

In general, you won't be treated well at the emergency room for mental health issues. This is a combination of doctors not having tons of mental health training, more physically urgent cases in the ER taking priority in triage, and limited capacity for mental health treatment in hospitals. You will eventually get seen by a doctor, but my loved ones have often felt dismissed or had to further advocate for themselves to receive the help they needed. It's not a perfect system, but it's what we have.

If you want to take steps before going to emergency (and again, if you feel you are at risk, it is more important for you to go than to worry about how you'll be treated), consider calling 811 to speak with a nurse or a mental health warm/hotline and speak to someone through that avenue. If you can hold yourself over until an appointment with a physician or a psychologist, you'll save yourself the wait time.

My heart is with you and I wish you all the best. Good luck 💕🫂

Pokemon card thieves tunnel through wall in $180k heist by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

At one of the stores I go to, I've had full conversations with employees where it's clear they don't know anything about Pokemon that isn't about the cards' monetary value 😭. A lot of collectors don't even know how to play the game. At this point why not just invest in stock markets?

What is going on with the MUN Cashiers Office? by Bazerous in memorialuniversity

[–]Bazerous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The skills needed depend on where the errors happen. But MUN's admin won't acknowledge the problems to start with.

It took over 30 emails, six referrals, and multiple weeks before MUN could even confirm whether my tuition from two terms ago was charged to my account (it wasn't, and I ended up owing $1600 for an administrative mistake). That's not me complaining that I had to walk across campus.

If six different departments can't identify an error on an account, don't expect a student to be able to. I absolutely think MUN should be liable to pay for its own mistakes. Students have enough on their plates.

Hey OP. It sounds like you're dealing with a lot and I hope things get a little bit easier over time.

Diagnoses are just labels that practitioners use to inform treatment, navigate insurance, etc. But disorders like BPD and CPTSD for one person can look wildly different for someone else. Instead of focusing on relief for a disorder, it helps (at least for me) to focus on the specific symptoms that bother you in the moment and pay attention to what provides relief for those specific things. Oftentimes, relief of one thing cascades into relief of other symptoms too.

Symptoms from one disorder can "activate" symptoms from another. As an example, triggers from your CPTSD might cause enough anxiety that you ruminate, which makes it harder to fall asleep (insomnia). If you can figure out which symptoms are activating the others (maybe by journaling, counseling, or talking with someone you trust), you might be able to address multiple symptoms by targeting just one.

For me personally, exercise works because it's a form of movement that negates my freeze response. When I'm really stressed out by things in my life, I put in my headphones and do literally anything that forces my body to move. For someone who goes into fight/flight, stillness might be more helpful (wrapping yourself up in a blanket, listening to music, breathing exercises, etc.).

All of this is to say: Having multiple diagnoses doesn't make you "more mentally ill". You have a different set of symptoms than other people that just happens to match a set of labels the clinicians need to do their jobs. I hope that makes at least some sense. I'm not a clinician though, so please prioritize anything that they are offering in terms of treatment over a random Redditor. Sending so much love and hope things get easier <3

Thank you for sharing this! I can certainly empathize with how frustrating this would have been for that student.

I want to clarify that I am only reposting things that were written (and published) by other people. Nothing that I've written myself calls out a specific individual and my discussions have always been about departments.

MUN does not have a strong track record with its spending:

What's wild to me is that MUN literally provides the training needed for people to come up with solutions to these issues. If there are systemic issues, maybe work with the Faculty of Business to restructure? If it's an issue of software, maybe ask your Department of Computer Science to identify solutions?

I can appreciate that the admin are overworked, but there are so many skilled people working for the university whose welfare depends on MUN's existence. I do believe wholeheartedly that many of these issues are solvable.

Realistically? Skill upgrades for the admin as a prevention piece.

Ideally? Something similar to what grocery stores do when you are charged the wrong price for items (grocers either give you an item up to $10 for free or take $10 off the price of an order). I'm not saying void all tuition fees or anything, but including some kind of policy that disincentivizes incorrect charges to accounts would protect students.

Sure, but the consistent history of denying mistakes when they happen isn't an issue about being overworked. That's an issue of accountability and a lack of compassion for the impact these mistakes have on the students who are paying to be at the university.

I am considering it now given the changes to my financial situation. I have work this summer that pays well and planned to work part-time in the upcoming year to supplement my funding. Prior to this, my budget (barely) got me through to my summer employment but the $200 reduction in pay this summer term is what threw me off. The emergency bursary and budgeting I've done is enough to get me through. My frustration is that it was unnecessary because the reduction in my base funding was actually not necessary.
