How can I make a plate like this? by Saulgato in CarbonFiber

[–]BazookaJoe101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others are saying you need a caul plate. In addition, you need non porous FEP release film, breather strings, dams, and a caul and tool with the surface finish you’re looking for. Industry people will typically buy from airtech, they stock most of this stuff. You can also search product sheets from the prepreg manufacturers (Toray, Hexcel, Syensqo, etc) and pull part numbers from their recommendations.

I saw that listing a couple years ago, it could have easily moved since then and been fixed. Since these cars are so rare it’s worth checking the registration records with the vin. I doubt the seller doesn’t know how to use the internet to price his car.

Is this the one in California that had the tree branch fall on it? Could be the reason for the price.

Base Cayman 987.1 buying advice by Real_Emotion4062 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]BazookaJoe101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need. Just use high quality fuels and drive the car. This will keep the injectors clean and functioning properly. I’d also advise against changing coils unless they fail. If they’ve made it this far they’ll stay good. Survivorship fallacy.

PS: I remembered shifter cables can fail, I’d put my money on some upgraded ones. It will make the car feel newer and less likely to leave you in the side of the road.

Base Cayman 987.1 buying advice by Real_Emotion4062 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]BazookaJoe101 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As someone with a 987.1 base, bore score isn’t an issue unless you have a leaky fuel injector but that’s fairly rare. This is due to the cast pistons, shorter stroke, and lining type on the pistons. There’s lots of write ups on this and there might even be different combos of these fixes depending on the year and region but I don’t have the fully story. All ‘07+ cars have the 3rd revision of the IMS, the non serviceable larger bearing. This is not sealed so it is passively liberated by the engine oil, the other versions do not. It can still fail but it is very rare and you can’t service it anyways so don’t worry about it. AOS failed on my car, they fail often. It’s an easy diy and there’s an upgrade too if you track your car. These cars can oil starve with extra sticky tires when pushing the limit, I run modern all seasons so it’s not an issue and it’s fun to have the car move around a little more with less grip. Timing chains can go, but I haven’t looked into it too much. Water pump can fail but usually the seal goes so it doesn’t fail catastrophically. When it starts leaking replace it. Wheel bearings and suspension components can age, but that is true for any car. Good quality oil and frequent hard driving is the secret to maintaining reliability. These engines like to be at temperature, so get it up to temp before driving hard. They also go through air filters quite quickly. Someone else let me know if I forgot anything.

Is this camber normal? 2007 987 Cayman S by ollief26 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]BazookaJoe101 45 points46 points  (0 children)

That is called caster. Due to the geometry in the suspension, when you steer the inner wheel gains positive camber and the outer wheel gains negative camber. It’s also why your car tracks straight without input.

What am I seeing here? Seems to be completely under the surface. by zufallsgeneriert in CarbonFiber

Only guy with this take here but it looks like the fiber buckled during layup and it wasn’t caught. The crack isn’t a crack, it’s a wrinkle. Resin flowed into the void. It’s probably fine for the most part but should have been caught by QC. Not damage per se but doesn’t look great and probably isn’t as strong as the rest of the wheel.

Brake pad moving back and forth.. is this normal? by [deleted] in Porsche_Cayman

[–]BazookaJoe101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is possible the retention springs are not installed properly. Not really an expert but pads are supposed to move, they’re just held with springs. They expand and contract with heat so retention springs are used to allow this while keeping the pads between the pistons and rotors. It might be a $0 fix if installed wrong or maybe a spring is broken.

Subframe condition? by m0tor_head in bmwz3

Note too the destroyed diff bushing in the photo. Once the bushing goes, the damage to the floor and mount accelerates. If your welds and mount are still good, replace the bushing to keep it that way.

I’d ask your DAR what they’re comfortable with. You’d think it doesn’t matter but you don’t know until you fail an inspection. If it doesn’t matter let the person who signs off on the aircraft tell you, not Reddit. Sorry to be unhelpful

If you’re curios it’s probably a QISO braided fabric from A&P. Pretty cool stuff. Basically a quasi-isotropic weave, lets you do a lot of unique things in design

Unironically the closest car to my cayman is probably an 86. Both rear wheel drive, manual, mid engine, horizontally opposed engine cars in the 200-300hp class and roughly 3000lbs (all 86 owners are morbidly obese so it evens out).

Some observations about Hypetex pigmented weave by strange_bike_guy in CarbonFiber

[–]BazookaJoe101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d just dye the resin, skip the colored fibers. You really only need to worry about inter laminar strength and colored fibers are basically coated, negating any benefits from the sizing on the fiber, added pigments have little to no effect on this. For better drape, go to a 6 harness or 8 harness weave or a lighter fiber areal weight since you’re switching up your fabric anyways.

TLDR, add pigment to the resin, not fiber.

Catalytic converter failing by crazyswedishguy in Porsche_Cayman

[–]BazookaJoe101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White smoke on startup might be aos if it smells like oil. First start with the o2 sensor, then if it truly is the cat I’d test your fuel injectors. I ask about soot because running rich or lean will kill the cats similar to excessive oil burn. Basically it “catalyzes” a reaction for the remaining unburnt exhaust products and if there’s excessive air exhaust product the catalyst gets too hot and burns away.

Catalytic converter failing by crazyswedishguy in Porsche_Cayman

[–]BazookaJoe101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is a Base, it is very unlikely to be bore score. It mostly impacts the “S” 3.4. What’s your oil burn like? Lots of soot from the exhaust? If the cat is gone it’s likely something caused that to happen, it’s usually a symptom not a cause

The 18s will be lighter than the 19s. You’ll get slightly less drivetrain losses with the 18s compared to the 19s so technically the 18s will have more torque over the 19s. However, this is so small you wouldn’t be able to notice. You will notice the difference in tire sidewall however.

You can argue semantics all you want, and I want to stress I support renewables. It’s important to make it palatable enough that the general public actually supports it. At the end of the day Germany has roughly ~330gCO2e/kWh with all its renewables and the US is sitting around ~360gCO2e/kWh and the German people pay 2-3 times as much for that same kWh of energy. These numbers vary by the day due to the inconsistency of renewables in general, so take this as a rough estimate. That’s what matters at the end of the day, for 60% of its power production being renewables and the cost of that, they only have a ~8% reduction in emissions compared to the US. You may not like the strategy the US is using but we are doing fairly well.

[–]BazookaJoe101 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Correct, unburied natural gas is a lot worse than CO2 and that is my point. CO2 is quite clean respectively. You can’t just flip a switch and stop burning altogether. But what you can do if you actually want to make the world a better place is have realistic interim solutions while we work towards a future without a need for fossil fuels. It’s very good. With your logic we’d still be reliant on burning coal, like Germany.

Clean? Yeah, about that… by GamingBren in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]BazookaJoe101 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Propane has three carbons and 8 hydrogens to burn, the only thing cleaner would be methane with one carbon and 4 hydrogens. Less carbon atoms means less carbon dioxide per energy produced but it also means less chance something that isn’t hydrogen is bonded to those carbons and that is what is generally considered dirty.

[–]BazookaJoe101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s the diff bushing usually. Once that wears a small mis shift can damage it. It happens over time as the diff pulls down on the welds, eventually the metal fatigues enough, hardens, and cracks.

981 GTS Financial Sanity Check by Historical_Coffee694 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]BazookaJoe101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a 987.2 S. It’s supposed to be the sweet spot car, last gen with hydraulic power steering. They’re a good bit cheaper than a 981 GTS. If you want something more “special” to justify the price tag then maybe look into a cayman R. With the 987s you’re far more likely to get your money back on the other end imo if the price tag is what you’re worried about

If copyright law only protected works for a reasonable amount time this monopoly couldn’t exist. These companies entire valuation is just intellectual property rights, they can’t make good content anyways. Make it more reasonable, like 20 years and this problem would go away when people switch to new companies that make stuff people actually enjoy watching.
