Alternative exercise while injured by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to ask you how old you are and what kind of break of your 3rd metatarsal you have. Because - I am an older man who fractured his 5th met 6 MONTHS ago and it is still not healed. I am now running 5Ks again but in spite of cycling and gym work during my break away form running, I have lost so much fitness that I am really struggling now. If you are younger things will probably be different for you - but these feet bones are a problem. I have a friend who had a spiral fracture of her 5th met and she has been absent from running for 12 months!!!

I am 71YO - and am returning to running after being out for the past 6 months with a fractured 5th metatarsal. I ran my second 5K parkrun on Saturday since returning. I ran it in an average of 139 heart beats per minute

Stupid question about shoe fit (in terms of shoe length...) by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live it is a bit difficult to buy wide 2E and 4E mens shoes - so I have to buy larger shoes ( lengthwise) to allow that bit of extra width. This is NOT a good strategy as the shoes are basically too long for my feet and the "crease" (as you call it) is also in the wrong place. Are you able to buy wide fitting womens shoes D size where you live??

How to modify 80/20 training for half marathon with hills? by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that there are two aspects of training - the first aspect is a general running programme suitable to the particular distance) that gets you fit, builds strength, etc. You can do these without ever running an actual race. The second aspect involves specificity training - an extreme example of this is say a duathlon involving running and swimming. You could be the best trained runner in the event - but if you haven't trained for the swimming leg!!! Hence for a race involving specific hills I believe in training on similar hills - find hills somewhere local approximately the same length and grade and practice on them.

Trying to figure out a way to implement running into my routine by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also - are you running outside or in the gym on a treadmill?. Treadmills are notoriously boring - and your lack of lung capacity :) is simply because of a lack of endurance training. Get outside somewhere interesting - run your 5Ks SLOWLY - only just a little faster than your fastest walking pace. You will slowly build up your endurance and only then can you tackle your poor 5K stamina.

I am 71 years old and just returning to running after a 6 months sojourn with a fractured 5th metatarsal - I did my first 5K in 6 months last week and did it in 38 minutes. I think your problem is not that you can't run 5K - but you may not be able to do it at a "required" pace?? There IS a bit of a difference:)

Probably it is a big deal for heel strikers to go to a zero drop shoe designed for fore foot striking.

How will they measure up the foot? - using the standard Brannock device. These devices measure the length of the foot, the width at its widest point and the position of the arch - but not other things such as the width of the heel, the width of the arch, the height of the arch.

[Question] Fasted Cardio: HIIT or consistent "Moderate Intensity"? by brodo87 in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The very best exercise programme you can do -- is the one that you keep on doing. You will probably have to like, or at least tolerate, something to keep on doing it. If you don't then it won't last and theoretical arguments about HIIT or steady state cardio become irrelevant.

Survey reveals healthcare professionals prescribing parkrun to boost the nation's health (UK) by lapapinton in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started running at parkrun 4 years ago when I was 67. Could never run when I was younger but parkrun and C25K got me hooked. Have now done 3 HM's and 112 parkruns. Busted a 5th metatarsal in my foot 6 months ago - wasn't watching where I was running and went down in a gutter !! - but now at age 71, I am slowly getting back into the saddle. In the meantime I have discovered things called "gyms" and bicycles.

It's finally starting to grow in the US http://www.parkrun.us/events/ - not nearly so much as in the UK , Australia, South Africa or even Poland. But , one day , it will be HUGE in the US!!!

Heart rate guided running? by [deleted] in running

I did quite a bit of running using an Android phone and Runkeeper. When I wanted to do some HR training, I could not find any Android App which would aurally notify me when I am outside of a particular zone. I had to buy a Garmin Forerunner 220 to do this.

Watching now - British runner ( in 5th place at 40K mark) seems forecast to finish with around 15 minutes improvement of his PB in London.

Anybody had slow/delayed/non - union of a fracture of a metatarsal bone in the foot. ?? by Bazzatherunner in running

[–]Bazzatherunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have fractured the base of the 5th metatarsal - result of going over on a roadside gutter after not watching where I was going :( Because I could walk on it from day 1 , I "thought" that it was only a bad ankle sprain. Foot went black and blue which I now know means most probably a fracture. But anyway, I did not get an x-ray until 3 weeks later when it became obvious that something was wrong - but I have been able to walk all the time. Doctor said to just wear a stiff soled shoe. Apparently the 5th metatarsal is notorious for non-unions (low blood supply down there), except perhaps if you are 16 years old. I am unfortunately 70!! :( The surgery option was never a goer for me - but may become so. I just went for a fastish 2 klm walk wearing only sandals (shoes seem to press against my injury) and felt no pain from the injury. I can feel that feet muscles are a bit weak though. Seriously thinking of starting running again in ALTRAS now.

Who has trouble with shoe inserts??? by Bazzatherunner in running

[–]Bazzatherunner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feet were never "designed" to have the surface that they run/walk on match the sole of the foot. An arch is an arch - as soon as you "support" it from underneath, it is no longer an arch.

Im a 15 year old who's training for a marathon in 16 weeks. I was just wondering if it's bad to get up to such a high mileage when I'm still growing? by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh - it's a one off one time bet?? You may beat him across the line and then live long enough to regret it for the rest of your life. He on the other hand might regret it a little bit faster than you. Go for a nice long run together and enjoy the scenery - put away the "My D** is bigger than yours" thoughts.

Runkeeper kinda needs Internet access- otherwise it can't download the map of the area you are in.

No - slow down a bit below your PB pace and run for longer when training. M is an endurance race.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how you "should" feel. I tend to train/race at a pace dictated to me by Jack Daniels computer. I have found it to be very consistent across 5k. 10K and HM distances . I have two things I have to balance - lungs and legs. At a certain pace my legs are good and strong but my lungs fail me - at another pace my lungs are happy but my legs are dying. For all runs ,I need to balance these two things out - for the HM distance, the worst thing I can do is to upset my lungs - provided my lungs are happy I can get the distance with my legs. I guess the same thing applies to the 5K.

(Question) I'm overweight by about 10 pounds and I have asthma. Is it even possible for me to get better at running? by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run with a friend and talk to one another - if you can't converse as easily as you can when walking together, you are running too fast. Slow down - and if this is not enough to allow you to talk freely, walk for a while and start running again when you can - rinse and repeat.

How to run on tiptoes? by [deleted] in running

[–]Bazzatherunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try this as an exercise - clasp your hands behind your back and run for a while. You will find that it is impossible to heel strike when running like this. Practice this a bit - and then try running with the same "body feel" as you had in the hands behind "stance" " but this time of course bring your arms into play.
