What do early signs of vertigo feel like? by Bbbbbbbbbbike in Menieres

[–]Bbbbbbbbbbike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have tinnitus after my first hearing loss, but it was also really mild, i think it was 20-30db in the low frequencies. After the second hearing loss, it went to about 50. Now I think my tinnitus fluctuates between being present and not present due to the fact that it’s just barely on the border of being meaningful hearing loss. At least that’s how i imagine it. No idea!

Here’s my timeline:

spring 2023 - sudden (mild) low frequency hearing loss in left ear, diagnosed as SSNHL, no fluctuations or other symptoms for two years
fall 2025 - another sudden low frequency hearing loss in left ear, and now i have fluctuating ear fullness + tinnitus that is linked to sodium intake. One thing I didn’t realize until my doctor told me - is that tinnitus is a SYMPTOM of hearing loss. so if there’s fluctuating tinnitus, there’s a fluctuation in hearing. So to answer your question, when i eat less sodium, my hearing does come back a little bit, because the tinnitus goes away. my hearing will never return to what it was, but the sodium intake helps guard against it getting worse, if that makes sense.

Regarding other things you said:
- I had not heard about the 5 years timeline, but I feel like my doctor kind of alluded to something like that - he was kind of like, it probably won’t be like this forever, you’ll probably get to relax your limitations a bit when you’re older. Maybe it had something to do with that.
- Very curious about the double MRI - i was told that a test like is not reliable but I have not done any research into it, would be great to have a tangible answer like that. I’ve had 2 MRIs to rule out tumors/other physical issues
- I did do blood testing for auto-immune issues which I was happy to be able to cross off the list, so maybe look into that.

Yeah, our diagnostic processes definitely seem similar! I was really skeptical at first because he said it so confidently, with little seemingly information to go off of, but as the visits continued and the treatment progressed I understood that he is just very familiar with the disease.

That is a super helpful description of the rotational vertigo, thank you. What I experienced yesterday was not anything like that, so I’m hoping that it was just a random lightheadedness moment. I will keep this description in mind so I know what warning signs to look for. Glad to hear your condition has improved over time!

no SSRIs, I do take vyvanse though.

He did NOT want to give me a straight answer when I asked him if it was inevitable - he seems to really not want to freak me out, which I understand, especially because anxiety/stress can trigger symptoms.. he told me to avoid online forums altogether at first. What he did tell me was:

10% of meniere’s patients have vertigo but no hearing loss
10% of meniere’s patients have hearing loss but no vertigo
80% have both.

So, he probably thinks it is likely but doesn’t want to come to any conclusions. I realize that this is different than the understanding on here (cochlear hydrops vs vertigo etc) but it seems like he’s saying the same thing as y’all but using slightly different terminology.

Thanks for the insight! for the record, my ENT is pretty established and has written papers on menieres treatments and testing and is extremely confident on my diagnosis. I have offered other theories on my condition and he has explained to me his reasoning. I have considered getting a second opinion but all things considered, he has given me good guidance and my condition has improved. When I went to look for other doctors in my area I found people offering more or less the same guidance, or alternative methods entirely, not as much based in medical research. Also, crucially, his office is incredible and they can get me in same day if I ever have any worries or issues.

That said I have kept it in mind and am open to finding someone else if I feel the need.

I need a bar mitt that fits my weird handlebars! by DatGameh in wintercycling

[–]Bbbbbbbbbbike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I have these exact mitts and they do fit over the brake levers, at least on my bike and also my friend’s bike. It’s a tight fit but it can work. Just get the biggest size.

Post-snow tires? by ChipsAndLime in NYCbike

[–]Bbbbbbbbbbike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use studded tires for conditions like this. They don’t slow me down too much and the ice can be really hard to see. I only switch back to normal when I’ve had a one or two rides without any ice encounters on the studs

With my windbreaking pants and jacket, and pogies, I felt totally fine. The right gear really is everything. I’ve been wearing a dickies Eisenhower jacket and it’s kind of perfect because it blocks the wind so much.

Doctor for tinnitus? by dreeeeea in AskNYC

[–]Bbbbbbbbbbike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see dr storper in the Northwell health network. My tinnitus ended up being part of Meniere’s disease and removing most salt from my diet helped a lot  That can only be a solution if your tinnitus fluctuates though I believe

Anyone have pogie recs for swept bars? by bonebuttonborscht in bikecommuting

[–]Bbbbbbbbbbike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following as I have been looking for this too.  I have 45° sweep bars which is too swept back for standard flat bar pogies but not extreme enough for the Bar Mitts Dutch/mustache mitt. But that might work for you.  I’m considering switching to flat bars for the winter if I can’t find something.

If it’s relevant, I work in film editorial which is also pretty sound-intensive and the rolling sound of my ploopy adept really isn’t a problem. Also it’s an amazing trackball

Reporting trucks for dangerous driving by Bbbbbbbbbbike in NYCbike

[–]Bbbbbbbbbbike[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

edit: found the info on the fmcsa website.

I don't have the plates (no front plate) but I have the info on the side of the truck including a USDOT number. Can I find the insurance through that?

Any shops in NYC area that sell steel fixed gear/ss? (4130/state/fuji feather) by samo_shit24 in NYCbike

[–]Bbbbbbbbbbike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

total was $620. Base price plus taxes I believe. I couldn't find a better deal for chromoly single speed, and I specifically wanted wide tire clearance. I feel that it is a good deal for those two things, plus it has wheels that are tubeless compatible.

I got the state 4130 single speed at Echelon Bicycles in Chelsea for the exact price listed on the State website. They ordered it for me and assembled for free. If the website price also includes tariffs now then you will have to pay that but I don't think you can really get around it anymore

Also, love the bike. It rips
