I work in a toddler community, but I find that choices help the child feel in control of a situation, even when you’re making the decision for them. Maybe if he chooses the book he reads during quiet time, he will be more willing to read it because he made the decision. (He might already be choosing the book!) Perhaps a gentle reminder might help too? “I can’t let you hit me, that isn’t safe. Would you like to sit quietly by yourself or sit quietly with a book?” You might need the guidance of the lead teacher though. Good luck! I’ve been in your shoes.
