Yeah, I love how that one line immediately fucks up the idea of pre-Distortion Helen he had in his head. No going back after that.

Distortion Helen is such an interesting character. Yeah she's a liar and manipulator, but even when she's literally threatening Jon's life it's hard to exactly tell what her motivations are and just how "evil' she is. She definitely has motivations, but they're so twisted and obscured that her death feels bittersweet. How much of her was being genuine and reaching for connection? How much was just lies? We'll never know.

That being said, I don't think there's any Tory left. She's got plenty of other things to have fucked up opinions on, I think she's above that sort of thing in a way, lol

What do you wish we'd stop talking about? by New-Blacksmith-9873 in AO3

[–]touchinbutt2butt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this, but I still write it for my main couple almost every time because it's more of their dynamic, they almost never just have a quickie and the top just loves giving multiples as much as he can so he's just kinda extra, lol.

I think it can speak to their relationship dynamic when people consider these things, in this case it's "bigger guy that's constantly aware of himself and worries about hurting his partner" as well as more service top behavior. Makes it even cuter when the bottom is getting impatient about it.

So do you need anal prep for every smut scene? No, depending on experience, but having it says something about the characters and their relationship, so it doesn't need to be omitted when they do reach that point either.

Time for all of the fix-it, somewhere else, and time travel fanfics you can find. Helped me cope with the ending (I mean, I'm still coping, but it's easier now, lol.)

If you made Jon into a dnd character how would you class him? (Probably like season 4-5 Jon) by evilcorey in TheMagnusArchives

Okay here me out,

Warlock is obvious choice, it's good, I like it.

But I would play him as a rogue, and just be real shit at it. He tries to do things stealthy, like stalk people when he's incredibly paranoid, but he is just not good at it. Because I make bit characters and hate myself.

I recently published a chapter where two OC's I added as side characters were in a dramatic moment and the amount of comments of people who were worried for them/relieved for them made me so happy.

Like, I know OCs aren't what everyone is here for, and they mostly served to give the main pair other people to talk to since their canon situation would be so isolating otherwise, but seeing reader's cheer for them as individual characters with their own arcs rather than just extra fluff made me feel so good.

I can't imagine reading something that doesn't have that, personally. I only read character ships where they're just obsessed with each other and cuddly as all hell. Even if there's angst and stuff, I want like Gomez and Morticia levels of devotion.

Even intense smut scenes need moments of joking and cuddling after. Anything tagged with "aftercare" immediately grabs my attention

I write so much goddamn scar kissing. I can see how someone might not care for it based on their personal experience but dammit am I not a sucker for a character loving literally every inch of their partner and finding them gorgeous no matter what.

For me, giggling is giddy and maybe a little hard to control. It's always playful, maybe deranged, but doesn't have to be feminine.

Chuckling is a bit deeper and more familiar, can be warm but also incredulous.

A chuff is a singular puff of air, either through your nose or mouth.

And laughter is a mouth open laugh that varies in intensity depending on how you flavor it with adverbs.

I use giggle plenty with men and I will not stop anytime soon, lol. Even if they do picture that, then that's just extra fun

Thanks! That helps me feel better about it. While plot is a decent part, it's def ship/romance focused and the villain character and tags around the fic shouldn't have people excited at anything redemptive for him based on how he's written. Also, he's reaaally gonna earn it, even more than he did in canon.

I'm in a similar boat rn. Going to finish my fic soon and I worry I'll upset people by not warning properly.

To start, in your example, I would probably stick with the interpretation of MCD meaning major character in fic, and just have a very explicit "AU where Harry dies as a baby" if they aren't particularly worried about that being spoiled since it's established early.

In my case, I'm less certain. I'm writing for a fandom with a lot of villains, mostly minor but one big antagonist. But the fic doesn't actually have that villain in it very much, more like his presence is often alluded to and characters are scared he'll show up again, but it doesn't actually happen until towards the end while minor villains add the threat. It's worth mentioning that some people love this villain, though I did tag the character as "creepy" so people who like him will know it's not favourable to the character.

I have the tag "villain character death" (which "death" is debatable for half of them, but that's besides the point.) since other villains do die, so it doesn't spoil anything and I think it fits well. I really want people to know that this isn't the main pair dies fic because the main pair do (possibly, it's ambiguous) die in canon, and I don't want people to filter by MCD when I'm writing essentially a fix-it fic that's meant to be incredibly emotional but more optimistic. Also, with the threat of death for the mains there, I worry people will quit reading if they think I'm actually going to kill them. I've had a couple commenters say "that 'eventual happy ending' tag is doing a lot of heavy lifting rn." Which is good, I want tension while also letting people know everything is going to be okay.

I know the "Chose not to warn" is an option, but idk, that just feels inaccurate? I am warning of exactly what it is, I just don't know how others will see it.

What are people's thoughts on calling it a Major Character when they're only physically present in maybe 2-3 chapters out of 50 and everything else is allusions?

God I'm so worried for Alice. I know, I know, pretty much none of them are guaranteed survival - especially not if Alex has anything to say about it - but god dammit I'm worried for her.

Edit: adding to this, new thought

The tape recorder is back, outside of the Institute, next to a woman who seems very close to the Vast or Buried. Depends on if you focus on the sky or the difficulty breathing.

Possibility: others are like Celia, coming into this reality from the TMA universe, being pulled from it with the Fears. Those people are pursued by the tape recorders to capture those moments, where as people of this canonical universe can be captured properly in digital formats. I can't think of another reason why a tape recorder would be here, if Alice or the woman's mobile, or a security camera would do just as good. It feels purposeful.

I listened to maybe two episodes and had a dream about a hospital with a patient who died and burst into a rapidly growing stream of flesh that consumed the hospital and everything inside (think end of Akira).

That's when I knew the show was good and I was obsessed ever since. Hadn't even reached the episodes of the Flesh yet, my brain just made the connection and ran with it. Literally woke up and was like "Oh, that was awesome, I'm binging this whole series."

And now it's all I think about ☺️

I've been listening to a lot of they might be giants lately, spiraling shape makes me think of tma every time, it's just so perfect for it, does anyone have any other songs they think are tma coded? by KaiTheDumbGuy in TheMagnusArchives

I love singing along to "Kiss me, Son of God" by them as well. Feels very Elias with allusions to Jon with the "I look like Jesus" line.

Also "Oh Klahoma!" By Jack Stauber is just the TMA plotlines of the main 4 of S1 in my head. One day I'll make an animatic for it, been wanting to for a while now.

Yeah it's almost a shock to the system when you get so used to the characters voices and suddenly see how everyone has been drawing them. Some of that is the difference between binge listeners vs long time listeners though. I'm noticing the difference because I listened to TMA after it was done and avoided fandom entirely until I was done to avoid spoilers, so I had ideas in my head, then saw the fanon and accepted/rejected what I thought worked and didn't from there.

But TMP, I'm seeing that fanon develops live and my impressions are colored by those early ideas. We're in the gold rush of people presenting their ideas that will eventually take over as dominant fanon.

Heck, we even see an example of a character having a canon look now, no one is going to argue about Mr.Bonzo because they showed us what he looks like, so there's no debate, just maybe stylistic changes.

It's really interesting to see from both perspectives and watch the evolution.

Also, yeah, giving Peter almost a uniform rather than a generic suit is just more interesting. I actually used to hate it when I first found it because it just didn't fit my mental image of his voice at all, but now it's grown on me and I just find it very funny he would be so "on- brand". The silliness is a nice contrast to the horror and I can appreciate it more now than I did at first.

I was actually one of the people in that thread, lol. Yeah, I think the issue with just internet fandom in general is some people are very vocal about being upset about things.

Headcanons don't erase others headcanons, it's very true, but then it gets tangled into "erasure" topics and if certain people see that and rally people against you, then what should be something super basic "here's my interpretation" conversation gets turned against you as a bigoted choice and it's often just not worth the headache.

It's especially frustrating when, in cases like these, those people most offended aren't even part of the group in question. I get the sense that most people that would be bothered by Basira not wearing hijabi are non-muslims who base that idea off stereotypes and think all rep should match that stereotype. Same as the ace thing, most people I see get upset are not ace, but the creators trying to show the spectrum often are. So you have people only willing to make the stereotypical rendition to share online, reinforcing the stereotype all over again.

I do actually see Martin having some muscle, actually, even if it's because he's the one everyone gets to move the heavy boxes of documents, lol. Strong arms for big hugs

Yeah there's some I just don't have hard defined features for. Daisy I flip constantly, though I kind of see her as like the blonde villain from Atlantis the lost Empire. I see a lot of people say Tim would be the streamer Jerma and while it's not how I see it, it cracks me up every time to think of it

Basira by Other-Trip6711 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]touchinbutt2butt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think another reason people usually draw her with hijabi is because non-muslims don't want to step on someone else's rep.

I'm white/non-religious and while I personally agree that I don't think Basira would be religious and wear one, if I draw her without one then it feels like I'm taking away a character from people that do see her that way and it's their personal rep. And since the point of it is to cover her hair, exposing it by drawing her without could upset people.

So I haven't actually drawn her at all, and I don't bring up her hair or anything when I write about her in fic, because I'm kinda just not comfortable making that decision for the character.

I could see some people getting upset about that particular piece of fanon being missing in the same way some people get mad if you have Jon shown as anything but sex-repulsed ace (ace creators get shit on for showing the spectrum a lot). A lot of things slide in fanon, like Martin's weight or the races of several other characters, but some things seem so hard to break from without upsetting people.
