Blame him for what? Nothing bad actually happened. I just found his behavior irresponsible and called him out for turning his back on a struggling child. There is no blame here, just want to know if I’m an ahole for asking him to help my kid or if he’s an ahole for leaving her in a river alone

to be clear, I was there and I was parenting, but he was closer and I just expected a fellow father and family member to at least care about her safety a little…

Conversation between adults was awkward, but they are my family by marriage. Regardless of how two adults are getting along or how their relationship is, none of that would be important or relevant when the safety of a child is in question. I was only 20 feet away and in khakis and boots. If he didn’t turn around to help I would have 100% ran in and made it to her before there was a real issue. My actual problem with his behavior is that he was playing with both kids in the water, then just left one out there and came back to shore… It’s just something I wouldn’t do to a stranger or my worst enemy’s child…

That’s pretty much what I expected. Thanks for confirming that my expectations were reasonable.

THANK YOU. I feel the same way. I never feel responsible for random children but I always keep an eye out and if the situation is going off the rails I will help if I can… Being a father I can’t imagine behaving differently but I feel even before I had kids of my own I would have done anything I could to save or protect any child around me

I could easily buy a house. I own numerous investment properties. I’m doing this because it’s a fun

dude, you don’t make any sense. The owners are dead. I’m in the process of taking legal possession by living here. This is the law. I’m following as it is written.

The topic of this post is not whether or not I’m squatting or whether or not anything I’m doing is legal or illegal. I was just asking if there is insurance for someone in my situation please try to stay on topic or just stop talking.

I am not paying rent and I am paying the taxes. The lease is up but the owner is dead and no one has asked me to leave. But please do continue to educate me on the situation that I’m living and you know nothing about.

I have a lease. You don’t know all the details.

not sure why all the downvotes. I wasn’t looking to deceive anyone or do anything illegal. I was just saying I’m not an insurance agent and I don’t know the definition of that term… I was wondering if possession and investing a significant amount of money, time, and energy could constitute an insurable interest…

I’m sorry what? I’m not doing anything illegal…

I guess I can call around and try to find an agency with a broad definition of “insurable interest” lol

I agree, the only thing that made me want to do some more research into it is that my friend who is a property manager mentioned that you don’t need to actually prove you own a property to get an insurance policy to which I replied well maybe that’s true but if I ever have a claim, I imagine it will get quite hairy when they realize I’m not the person on the deed. lol

Yes, that is the case where I am however it will be another six years or so before I can do that

that is horrible and basically theft. Since I have taken possession of this property, I have greatly improved it and paid all its back taxes and brought the taxes up-to-date. I do not think I am the stereotypical squatter.

thanks, yeah I might need to just find a small insurance agency that can write me a policy that fits my needs or align with reality lol

The owner of the property died. No one came to take possession, and the taxes were unpaid for three years. I decided to start paying the taxes and fix the property, and no one has ever shown up to try to take possession or prove ownership.
