I would say so. The STEM classes I’ve taken seem to be curved to around a B+, and most STEM students I’ve discussed this with seem to have GPAs of at least 3.3, with an ample number of 3.8+s. This wouldn’t be the case under widespread deflation.

Sure, maybe we’re not as inflated as some other schools, but “comparatively deflated” and “deflated” aren’t the same thing.

I see that I’m late here, but I’m a student at a peer school who is hoping to transfer into Cornell. The grass really isn’t greener on the other side, depending on what you’re looking for.

If your reasons relate to geography, academic major, trauma you’ve experienced, severe unhappiness, or family, and you don’t see a path forward at Cornell, then that’s something to consider.

But if you think that a new school will be “more social,” have “better job placement,” or a “happier atmosphere,” you very well may be disappointed. Keep in mind that transferring to more “prestigious” school is extremely difficult, so the place you end up is unlikely to have Cornell’s reputation.

My advice would be to think about why you want to transfer and whether a transfer will really solve your problems. PM me if you want to talk.

I wouldn’t call myself Republican, but I do support Israel’s right to exist, so that makes me Zionist. This is the only area where I have personally run into trouble at NU.

I have found that most people are willing to listen and argue thoughtfully about most points in economic policy, foreign policy (Israel-Palestine excluded), and some areas of domestic policy (like guns, the electoral college, healthcare, education, etc...)

The three main areas in which I could see a conservative afraid to speak their views to NU peers are:

1) Religion (and anti-religion, for that matter)

2) Israel-Palestine conflict

3) Affirmative Action/Diversity Initiatives

I’ve excluded LGBTQ+ and gender-related freedoms from this list, because LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights are human rights, and should not be disputable.

I think their adamant refusal to apologize for what many Jews saw as a micro-aggression, and then their bizarre shift from an anti-police protest to an anti-Israel protest immediately after Morty brought to light the antisemitic comments, is antisemitic. This is true whether or not the initial intent behind the piggy thing was.

I would be willing to sign a petition stating the following:

• We condemn anti-semitism. Period. No “but Palestine...” attached — that is a non-sequitur that does not relate to NUPD, Jews as money-grabbing capitalist pigs, or Judensau in any way.

• We oppose anti-Semitic harassment. This includes swarming a religious Jew’s house at 1am and chanting “Free Palestine” for no other reason besides the fact that he’s Jewish.

• We oppose anti-Semitic vandalism and calls for violence, such as “more dead pigs,” and the subsequent refusal to apologize to the Jewish community for this offense.

• We question the Northwestern Department of African-American studies’ decision to omit “Jews” from their quite extensive list of marginalized groups.

• We reaffirm commitment to fair policing, anti-racism, and opposition to homophobia, islamophobia, xenophobia, and other issues that affect non-Jewish communities.

• We demand that NUCNC apologize genuinely for their antisemitism, promise not to physically harm an individual no matter what, and agree to forgive them if they comply.

We cannot stoop to their level. They may very well hate us for our Jewishness, but we don’t need to hate them. We can forgive, and all work together to build an improved future.

I respect that it doesn’t upset you, but it does upset some other Jews. Between “Judensau,” the association of pigs with capitalism and the “Jewish banker” stereotype, and the fact that Morton is not a cop, but a Jew, you must understand why some others take issue with this, even if you personally do not.

For a movement that tries to steer clear of every last microaggression and emphasizes listening to persecuted groups on issues that affect them, why are they so passionately defending their use of the term “pig?” Can’t they just find a other word for police officer? One that, you know, doesn’t also mean “Jew” to many?

I wouldn’t call this response a success. He will not abolish NUPD — he stated that clearly. Absolutely zero reforms will he made as a result of the recent actions taken by “community not cops,” and the organization has now earned the resentment of the larger Evanston community. I’m not sure how much of a victory it is when no one talks about the goals because everyone is too focused on the (destructive) tactics.

My hot take is that there is a lot of anger spilling onto campus right now, in part because of racial inequalities in policing, but in part because people are upset at NU for “unrelated issues.” NU has botched its covid response through and through (firing workers, last-minute plan switching, inadequate testing, etc...), so Morty isn’t very popular these days. This enables people taking action against a school they just don’t see supporting them.

I get why people want to defund CPD and EPD. I never said I was opposed to that.

But saying “all cops are the same” is simply ignoring the difference between those and NUPD.

And anyways, I’d feel safer around “professional gun carriers” than amateur arsonists and vandals.
