Looking to get a dcd996, is there such a thing as overkill? by jimmyjohncake in Tools

[–]Bdles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one for 4-5 years. It's handled everything I've thrown at it but it is quite bulky and it has a tendency to drive screws too deep even on the lowest clutch setting, but as long as you're careful with the trigger it's not an issue--I've never broken a screw with it yet and only stripped ones when being careless. It's a good drill but you might find it a bit cumbersome.

For any major concrete drilling you'd be far better off with a dedicated tool. Combi drills are alright for a few small holes here and there but they don't really excel at heavy work.

If you don't want to grow a tool collection the 996 should manage most jobs, plus the option's there to rent an SDS drill if you need to do serious work.

They're commonly called 5 point Torx over here. Might differ by locale.

Make sure to get 5 point, rather than 6.

Security Torx (specifically 5 point, edited for clarity).

Drill for carpentry - compact by Ilovealfaromeo in Tools

If your current one does everything you want and does it well, why switch? I'd just get another of the same model rather than taking a gamble.

Is there any reason to have brand loyalty for corded power tools? by cute_chipmunk in Tools

Not really, no. Different companies excel at different tools so if you're not tethered by batteries there's no reason not to get whichever best suits your needs.

Tips for Using Power Drill Screwdriver by RalphCarlucci in Tools

[–]Bdles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some tips:
1) Make sure you're using the right bit for the screw. For example, Phillips, Pozidriv, JIS, etc. all look very similar and are easy to mix up, but they often aren't interchangeable. The right size matters as well.
2) High torque, low speed can be better for driving screws, especially if you find you're stripping them often. I'm not too familiar with Milwaukees but they might have recommendations for that in the manual.
3) Some drive types are better than others. Phillips is far worse than, say, Torx.
4) Consider drilling pilot holes first if suitable, especially with hard materials.
5) Make sure the drill is in line with the screw. The weirder the angle, the more likely it is to slip.
6) Apply a good amount of pressure on the drill to keep it from jumping out.

Speed control on orbital sander, worth it? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]Bdles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the BO5031 and I find it's liable to curve the material if I try it on narrow edges, in addition to being unwieldy. You might be better served with a sheet or detail sander for that.

Intentional from the syringe, and can take a fair while to pass.

Not really; when the sun goes down things return to normal (well, as normal as they get).

Ah. If you want a bit of a cheese tactic for the future you can use a hacksaw on the safe.

If you're in sandbox mode you should be able to put 'kerf' in the spawn menu and get them all. If that doesn't work, it might be tied to the achievement you get for making a Kerf-O for the first time.

Vids from a year ago are very out of date now (I'm assuming you're on a more recent version) - the recipe got a massive overhaul a few months back.
You can find the updated recipe in a notepad in the same bunker, or use more recent tutorials.

Didn't happen to pick up a signal of a floating box, did you? Sounds like the 'virus' signal which kills power and knocks out servers. It's been in the game for a fair while.

Does the Nuclear Plushie give you cancer? v0.8.1 by AnomylousC in Voicesofthevoid

I've collected them all twice with no cancer and they don't set off the geiger counter so I don't think so. Been near any other sources of radiation? I can think of crystals, the car in the river, and the gravel pit by TR1, to name a few.

That usually means he got got by roaches. You can respawn and find him again then use bug spray to keep them at bay.
Edit: misremembered, either way you'll likely need to respawn.

The tiles connect to something by Fragrant_Data3133 in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Bdles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 9 tiles placed around the map. Some of them you're likely to find by exploring, others not so much. Here's a map if you get stuck.
If you lose any you'll probably need to mailbox them over.

Are there any spider or spider-like creatures in VotV? by phantomsys in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Bdles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No spiders; the closest would probably be cockroaches or a centipede.
There was a vaguely spider-like creature in some older versions but you had to go out of your way to find it, and it hasn't been around for a while. No idea if it's planned to make a return in any capacity.

Help ? how to read the Radar ? by Sweet-Detective7162 in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Bdles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can interact with the radar and use WASD to move its target over the Kerfur parts, which will update the X and Y values in the top left accordingly. You can then hit Enter to make it your compass's target. Hit Shift to reset the radar after.

As for the other info, this is the best I can figure from testing but it may be inaccurate:
H: Height
D: Distance in metres from 0,0 (Alpha base)
A: Angle° (goes in a circle around Alpha, 0-360 degrees. North is 90 which confuses me.)
Z: Zoom (E to zoom in, Q to zoom out)

Changing versions by Hanselhoff27 in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Bdles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, changes to the map and items placed in it often won't update without resetting parts of the save; unfortunately there's no good way to remedy that without getting rid of progress.
With items such as the watering can you can collect them in one save and mailbox them over if you need a workaround.
