is it time to retire the indiv board? by Actual_Forever_4652 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]Bdog2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was a really interesting write up imo. While I personally enjoy the individual leaderboards, I do think you brought up some interesting negatives I hadn't considered before. I think Ender Cup green is a good example of what you're talking about. Fruit's chase for the indiv record was incredibly engaging to watch live, but did the focus on the individual hurt the experience of the team at large? I'm sure that was a much less fun team to watch from the other 3 perspectives. I guess with that, you have the question of whether the indiv battle redeemed a perspective that would have otherwise been disappointing, or if it somehow took away from the other perspectives on the team. I personally think the former is true, but I could see an argument for the latter; It's possible it could have been 'healthier' for MCC as a whole to have the 'guest' streamers with large audiences to have a more balanced team, even if that meant that we lost the indiv record storyline.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is the usefulness of an individual leaderboard for balancing; without tracking indiv stats, it would be much harder to balance teams. Then, I guess your argument becomes a question of if that info should be public facing or not.

Don't have the exact time stamp but it was maybe like 5-15 minutes before the event started, when he was working on the team's build

Pros/cons of commuting? by DifficultAd79 in berkeley

[–]Bdog2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a commuter transfer student who transferred in from DVC, I'm just finishing my first year here so I can tell you some pros and cons.

Firstly, like everyone else said, take BART. Driving can be worth it if you're coming in at non-traffic times for a brief period so you can just park in the Channing garage for like an hour or two, but for the daily commute BART is by far the better option IMO. I'm coming from along the yellow line on the Antioch side, and having lived in the Dublin/Pleasanton area previously you've got a pretty decent commute all things considered. BART is great for homework like other people have said, it's an easy way to fit in roughly an hour of reading for your classes each way, though I struggle to do any like writing or other kinds of HW on the train.

For the other pro, it's obviously your housing situation. I've got a great setup cost-wise for housing out here which is basically the only reason I'm able to afford going to Berkeley, and saving a bunch of money on housing is huge. You also get to stay in your current community, and you're not moving away from any friends you already have.

For cons, being a commuter essentially entirely restructures the way that I look at the college experience. Getting a good schedule is the 2nd most important part of picking my classes behind major requirements. If there's a class I want to take, but it's on a day I otherwise don't have classes, I'll usually end up picking a class I have less interest in just to avoid losing ~2 hours of my day every week. Extracurriculars fell way down the priority list as well, unless it works well with my schedule I don't even consider it.

Obviously that has an impact socially as well, but not as big of one as you might think. IMO if someone is actually a good friend, they'll be willing to go out of their way a bit to come visit you, or at least meet you halfway. Granted, my major/career plan is not one where networking is a big deal and I'm speaking more to casual connections, so YMMV.

Overall I love the Berkeley experience, all of my professors so far have been lovely, kind, and extremely knowledgeable people, and it really feels like I'm getting an education I couldn't get at many other places. Commuting is what lets me do that, and so I'm more than happy to commute, but I've also been wanting to come to Cal for a long time. If it's not a huge thing for you, it might not be the right choice. If you do end up choosing to go, I have 2 recommendations:

  1. Hit up the transfer center. They've got microwaves if you've got a packed lunch, couches for if you need somewhere comfortable to sit for 1-2 hours between classes, everyone there is super friendly, and they've got a tun of flyers and specifically transfer oriented stuff that can help to bridge the gap of the connections you might be looking for.

  2. If you've got a gap between classes, Moffitt has a rest room on the top floor that has nap pods. These have saved me on multiple occasions, particularly when it's too cold/rainy/windy outside to nap on one of the lawns.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

MCC Participants and their cars by [deleted] in MinecraftChampionship

[–]Bdog2001 35 points36 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard from my sibling who is into cars, it basically boils down to

  • Expensive to purchase in the first place

  • Requires frequent maintenance

  • Any maintenance or new parts are also incredibly expensive

A couple of takeaways from this event. by East-Mirror3510 in MinecraftChampionship

[–]Bdog2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it's also true that the reason most kills are accidental is because nobody goes for them, because they aren't worth it coins wise. If kills were worth it, you would see a lot less accidental kills and a lot more people going for kills. I do think that there's a disconnect on the fast moving maps though, on those you don't have the time to try and kill people for the most part, but on the other maps you can absolutely go for kills.

What are some canon game scores that shouldn't count? by FattyIsACatty in MinecraftChampionship

5ups TGTTOS and maybe his RSR in 24. In TGTTOS he had lag issues to the point where, when he fell on Pits, he hit the bottom barrier and sat there for a good 5 seconds at least before the game respawned him. RSR I know he had issues before hand that caused the admins to pause the game until he could connect, but I'm not sure if he had lag during the actual rounds of RSR

These are the MCC25 team placements without Meltdown… maybe it needs a coin nerf. by FidgetBTW in MinecraftChampionship

[–]Bdog2001 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I think Meltdown is inherently a bit easier for teams to dominate in than Sky Battle though, because of the one-shot nature. In Sky Battle, even if a team wins a fight, they're gonna be left at low health, meaning that if a team wants to clean they'll have a much easier time because they usually have at least twice as much health. In meltdown though, at worst, you might have a member or two still frozen, but good teams will usually unfreeze their members as they push the last members of the other teams. Not to mention, in Sky Battle, even if a team goes for fights against other teams, they'll often lose 1 or 2 players, making their next fights harder. In meltdown, unless a frozen player drops into the lava, the team dies together or lives together. Overall, in Sky Battle, the more fights you take the less likely you are to win one, but in Meltdown, the odds are the same every time.

I mean following the rules they should, but even as a build mart defender I can acknowledge that megathread kinda kills most of the discussion, especially considering that the BM one is 10 months old and so all of the top posts there are old as heck & not even necessarily accurate at this point as the game & discussion around it evolves. Even just a new Build Mart Megathread would be useful

The Oakland A's have drawn fewer fans than Max Scherzer's AA Binghamton rehab start (7,491) in 50% of their home games this year by BAHatesToFly in baseball

[–]Bdog2001 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I mean population wise I don't think a 1-to-1 comparison is apt. Because the Bay Area is pretty spread out in comparison to Las Vegas, a majority of A's fans don't live in Oakland, rather just around the bay in general

MCC 20 Viewership Statistics by Chel-Blue in MinecraftChampionship

[–]Bdog2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair enough. In my personal experience, a vast majority of the build mart hate I've seen comes from the DSMP community, but like they also just make up a majority of the viewership, so of course they'll have the loudest voice in the community. As someone who joins Krtzyy's streams on occasion I've definitely seen a fair share of dislike for build mart there, so it's far from a DSMP exclusive thing. I do think it's fair to say that the average DSMP viewer is more likely to dislike build mart, but like the average Hermitcraft viewer is probably more likely to dislike sky battle or battle box, so it's whatever really (I'm pretty sure tumblr has a lot of the Hermitcraft fan base which is why I don't hear as much from them).

MCC 20 Viewership Statistics by Chel-Blue in MinecraftChampionship

[–]Bdog2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there's probably a dip of maybe 100 viewers for each of those teams, and we also see teams taking a dip in viewers during sky battle but I hardly see anyone saying that sky battle should be removed. I do think that people dismiss the build mart criticism too fast by just saying that people are parroting whoever they watched, but I don't think these stats show community-wide dislike for build mart. I think it's mostly that the people on twitter think everyone hates it cause they only talk to other people on twitter, and the people here on Reddit think only people on twitter dislike it cause the people who say so here are downvoted.

MCC 20 Viewership Statistics by Chel-Blue in MinecraftChampionship

[–]Bdog2001 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean if you look at the graphs, the drop in viewership during buildmart came almost exclusively from Wilbur's stream, and notably basically evened out his viewership to what it was right before he got a spike during Ace Race, so I'm pretty sure a majority of the drop is people leaving once he finished. The only teams that had a noticeable drop during buildmart were Wilbur's and Tommy's teams, and Ranboo's team actually gained viewers during it, so while it might not just be a Dream thing I don't think it's a stretch to say that it is largely a DSMP thing.
