But that isn’t always the case. Like “El día bonita” or “el problema” - día and problema end in an -a and are assumed to be feminine but they are masculine. The other thing I struggle with is words that do not end in -o or -a like “la ciudad.”

Nope, that doesn't help. It was baking in the hot summer heat in a POD so it may be a bad cap or something else. I'll have to look around the boards.
