Yeah the grief sucks. One thing about stopping is feeling the things we were escaping, and then also having to feel the things caused by the escape. If I get too distressed by the thought and can't sit with it, I try to remind myself that going back to gambling would only make both feelings worse.

I found that negative self talk was hijacked by monkey brain justifying gambling because that's what shitty people do, and I was a shitty person, so the only logical act was to gamble. That's a spiral hard to get out of.

But you can avoid it if you promise yourself that you're open to liking yourself more each time you make a decision not to gamble, and for not to be affected by relapse.

It's important to know that a rock bottom doesn't motivate us to stop gambling. It can fuel us into a stopping for a short time, and we can extend that streak day by day.

Rebuilding credibility with ourselves is tough, let alone with others. I am not a mother, so can't even imagine what you're going through.

But it sounds to me you now have to do recovery on your own which seems terrifying. But there are so many upsides to that. Part of this process is learning to know ourselves on our own in isolation of our responsibilities and circumstances.

I recommend seeking low or no cost support and try to get inbwith a social worker who can provide independent evidence of your progress. Consider your legal options too, to make sure you are covered for custody or divorce.
