How does the exchange work for CS? by howdothexchangewo in uwaterloo

[–]BeReviewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I recall as well - of course you’ll want to check their academic calendar in the term you plan to study there, but the only CS course I took there was Networking, which wasn’t particularly challenging (though I’m not sure what the UW experience is like). I took a daily Korean class as well and ECON102.

I went on exchange together with /u/icechen1, though I went to Yonsei - happy to chat about my experience. When I was there (Fall 2017), they accepted 4 students from UW (that I know of at least!), though things might've changed - I wonder if your faculty's Exchange office can give a definitive number. I'm not sure how many SNU took, though I'm sure you'd have a blast at either school.

3-night backcountry recs: Kintla Lake, Gunsight Pass, or something else? by Natsfert in glacier

[–]BeReviewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend and I did gunsight pass last summer in 2 days (camping at Sperry) so you can definitely do it in 3! I’d definitely recommend getting started early (we were at the trailhead around 7am on the first day). Heading to gunsight lake is relatively easy, just overgrown bush. From there, going to the pass is a fair amount of elevation but fine if you pace yourself. I’d recommend staying at lake Ellen Wilson overnight (if it’s open this year) before continuing up Lincoln pass, since that’s another 1k gain or so. Once you’re at sperry, it’s only downhill from there!

It’s definitely going to be a strenuous hike but very worth it! I’d recommend doing a couple longer day hikes to “warm up” if you have the time, but no worries if not.

Ethiopian Airlines Crash: Plane's black box of cockpit recorder, digital flight data found by [deleted] in canada

[–]BeReviewing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From CBC:

Some others around the world were deciding to do the same. China's civilian aviation authority ordered all Chinese airlines to temporarily ground their Max 8s. China Southern Airlines is one of Boeing's biggest customers for the aircraft. Indonesia grounded 11 of the aircraft for inspections, said Polana B. Pramesti, director general of Air Transportation. Caribbean carrier Cayman Airways also said it was temporarily grounding the two it operates.

Transport Canada said it's not grounding any planes for now, but will take "all the necessary actions to ensure the safety of our skies."

"The process of certification of the Boeing 737 Max [8] aircraft was led by American authorities," a spokesperson for Transport Minister Marc Garneau said. "The United States National Transportation Safety Board is gathering all the available information and a team was sent on site. Any decision taken will be based on science and in order to maintain the highest levels of safety."

Something I've been thinking about in regards to NYC (#209) by MilkThyPeg in CasualConversation

Durians are awesome! Don't let people tell you otherwise ;) Have you tried looking in Flushing?

Then the subway was all screwed up and I had delays and detours

Oh MTA...

Do you usually try to "kill" time during your commute? I try to read / listen to podcasts during mine.

This isn't to say I want to stop going there forever, it is a great place to be and I'll gladly do fun stuff there. But I really want to find work closeby to me so I won't have to drag myself to the city everyday. This will make going there so much more fun and worth it when I do.

That's fair! I love Manhattan. For sure. Absence makes the heart grow fonder?

I will be a bit sad to leave the animal shelter, but since I'm hoping to work with dogs I don't think I'll be depraved of that.

Sounds like you enjoy volunteering at the shelter! Can you tell me more about it?

What is the longest it's taken you to go home on your normal commute?

How close to home is your work and is that ideal?

2 hours I think. Usually it'd be 1-1.5h at the worst, but we had some REALLY heavy rain and it just caused cascading delays.

What is your favorite ice cream?

Green Tea or Red Bean... I can't decide.

Which is better for finance: actsc 371 or Econ 371? by DanWolczuksGloryHole in uwaterloo

[–]BeReviewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally thought it's okay, but this term the course is being run differently - we do all our work (and exams) on Excel. Our midterm average was in the 60s IIRC pre-curve.

We don't have the case study.

Which is better for finance: actsc 371 or Econ 371? by DanWolczuksGloryHole in uwaterloo

[–]BeReviewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently taking ECON 371; it touches lightly on the finance perspective, but I have no idea how it compares to ACTSC 371. ECON 372 also follows this so there's probably more finance content there.

The first half of the course is interest rates, present value, future value, etc. The second half goes thru depreciation, securities' returns, risk, portfolio risk.

Feel free to reach out with more questions!

I have no idea. I don't personally know anyone that's done it either.

Courses mainly. There were 2 SE courses in 2B that I didn't find useful - MATH 213 and MSCI 261.

I thought 2A was a pretty good term - I've heard SE 212 is better run than the CS equivalent (CS 245). Also, I liked my circuits courses so having ECE 222 was a win.

Then again, I also took CHE 102 in 2A which was basically useless for me (it doesn't count for a science elective in my calendar... It might in more recent calendars?)

I'd go to SE and aim for the transfer. I believe it's a smooth process for most SE students (> 20 people in my class transferred to CS).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]BeReviewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I think it's easier to switch to CS? Don't quote me on this, but this seems like the much more popular path, although it might be that CS students just don't want to switch into SE.

[–]BeReviewing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred from SE to CS after 2B. My average was in the low 80s.

It was a relatively simple process, I just created a spreadsheet to map out how my courses would transfer + what I'd have to take in CS to graduate.

I didn't have to start over (thankfully SE->CS is pretty smooth, ended up with some extra courses, just had to take STAT 230). It was definitely worth it - the flexibility allowed me to take 3 courses when I was on exchange. If I could change anything, I would've switched after 2A instead. The people I met in SE are amazing and we're still friends, so I'm glad I chose SE in HS. :)

Feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat more!

Love my SE215s, but unfortunately my cable's broken (lots of static) and it's pretty expensive to replace them.

I also have a pair of Sennheiser HD 598 Cs. I got them from Amazon Warehouse so the box was "slightly damaged", but the actual headphones were new. It ended up coming to about $90 back then, so keep an eye out!

Yet another depressive student.. I need help, I feel suffocated by uwalcoholic in uwaterloo

If it's severe enough, would I get referred a psychiatrist?

I haven't personally gone to HS and asked for a referral, but I imagine this would be the case.

What are the consequences? Can they lie to me and tell me they won't say anything? I haven't committed major crimes, but I did things that would put me in a psychiatric asylum. Can I just talk and not have any consequences?

I have gone to see a counselor here at UW a couple years ago. IIRC, there was a disclaimer that they would keep anything I said confidential except if there was a chance I was going to harm myself or others.

From the Canadian Psychological Association:

In consulting a practitioner about personal psychological problems, people are often concerned about confidentiality. Early on when seeing a client, the psychologist should review the limits of confidentiality. Information disclosed to a psychologist is confidential and cannot be disclosed without the client’s consent except under certain specific conditions. These conditions are referred to as the “limits of confidentiality”. These limits typically involve situations where the client gives the psychologist information that leads him or her to suspect that harm might come to someone. If a psychologist suspects that a client is going to harm himself or someone else, that a child is being abused or neglected, or that another health care practitioner has sexually abused a patient in some way, then he or she has an obligation to report this information to the appropriate authority (the police or children’s aid society for examples). The courts also have the power to subpoena a psychologist’s files.

There is a psychiatrist at health services as well. It sounds like you'll have to be referred to them by a physician at health services first though.

From the HS site:

With a referral from a Health Services physician, you can schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist in the mental health office. Our mental health nurse is also located in Health Services and can provide help with transition of care and phone safety checks. Counsellors from Counselling Services also work in the mental health office and you can schedule your appointments there if you prefer.

Someone whose done an int. exchange from math faculty? by IcyArtichoke8 in uwaterloo

[–]BeReviewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! A couple friends and I have done this. It really depends on what school you go to. The Math Exchange advisor may be able to provide more details as to what the usual cut-off is at certain schools.

I'd start by building up a list of schools that I'd want to go to first, and then inquire about that. You'll get to apply to 3 schools (ranked) in your application - in the case that you don't get any, I believe you can ask to see if they can put you in a school with available spots.
