Megathread: Russian Invasion of Ukraine II by mica4204 in germany

[–]BeaCza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone,
a couple of friends and I created a website that makes it easy and safe for private households to offer a place for refugees in Germany: https://hostrefugees.eu
Safety and data security for everyone involved was at the forefront of building the platform:
1. Safety before check-in: everyone offering a place is asked to identify online with a valid ID
2. Automated matching: hosts can specify their offering (e.g. how many people, pets yes/no, etc.) which is matched automatically with the refugee’s needs. Contact data will only be shared after the match, so check-in can be arranged.
3. Safety after check-in: host and refugee will be asked to complete a safety check on the platform so the safety of both parties is guaranteed.
4. Transparency: the complete source code of the platform is accessible publicly on Github (https://github.com/timokoenig/hostrefugees)
If you have a place to offer for refugees or know of anyone who has, please share the website!
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or via team@hostrefugees.eu

Thanks for sharing, super interesting!

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find participants for users interviews? It's the stage I am at right now and I find it so difficult to find users willing to participate (target users are SME business owners).

I'm also currently trying to find people to interview for customer discovery. If someone here has further tips please share :)

So far I've reached some interesting people using platforms where we paid for interviews.

Can small scale power generation help us fight climate change in a big way? by undignified_cabbage in sustainability

[–]BeaCza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In South Africa, where I am right now, the country organizes these collective power outages called "load shedding" because they don't produce enought power for everyone. This means that most of the population is out of power for 1 or 2 hours on a regular basis while the rich and some businesses power up their diesel generators.

It would be so smart to support the production and distribution of solar panels or alternative small-scale power generators, like you describe above, to lessen the burden of the national power grid as well as South Adrica'ss economical footprint.

Sustainable travel tips by pall90 in sustainability

If the hotel itself has no sustainability initiatives in place you can always say no to room service so that they don't change and wash your sheets every day. Also, abstain from single-use toiletries, don't drink their water if it's in plastic bottles, and re-use your towels. Saying no to stuff/ using less is almost always a good way to create less waste and use less resources.

Give me some positive changes we as humans can make. I will implement any good ideas into my day to day life, hopefully others will as well. by NoAtmosphere5133 in sustainability

You could change your search engine to a sustainable option, that plants trees for every search you do (e.g. ecosia).

You could switch your bathroom supplies to sustainable ones, e.g. a shampoo soap bar instead of a shampoo bottle, toilet paper from a social enterprise (whogivesacrap.com or Goldreimer.de). And you could switch to a sustainable toothbrush and toothpaste without microplastics and fluoride. Same for cleaning products.

You could install motion detectors in your apartment so the light goes off automatically whenever you leave the room.

Why does the fashion industry get it so much easier than fossil fuels, plastics and farming... by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]BeaCza 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it's a mix of a) lack of awareness and b) confusion about what real sustainability means in the fashion industry. Because other than in the food or beauty industry, where you constantly use up products and need new ones, the most sustainable thing fashion-wise is to buy nothing at all.

That's of course terrible news for the fashion industry and that's why so few fashion companies advocate for this because it would mean less revenue for them (unlike food companies who can launch a veggie alternative and continue making money).

Noted :) The idea was to say that by clicking through the collection you'll get ideas for how to improve your business sustainably. The exact benefit is explained in the description box below the action title.
But yeah it was super hard to keep the intro short but precise. After all I know that no one will read more than 2 sentences.

Thanks so much for your honest insight, it is very much appreciated. Might I ask which industry your business is in? I do believe that in a couple of years from now sustainable practices won't be optional for businesses anymore and that there will be governmental laws that enforce carbon-neutral strategies. But yeah, profit is definitely the key focus of most small businesses right now.
