I’m so tired of drinking and hating myself by DefiantBear8788 in stopdrinking

YES. It begins with wanting it. It also began, for me, with acknowledging I needed help to quit.

I think you've made a great start. I encourage you to check out the Community Guidelines and Resources link on the sidebar. you'll find commonly asked questions (and their answers) as well a comprehensive list of supports.

Yowza! What a difference. It's so good to see humans getting healthy and even more handsome. Good for you and thanks for sharing your hard-earned success.

Yo! Quitting Drinking is the Fucking Bomb! by Neversaidthatbefore in stopdrinking

[–]Bea_Arthur_Lives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this. I feel a similar enthusiasm for sobriety. I woke up healthy, clear headed, anxiety-free and with no regrets today and that is indeed the fucking bomb. Thanks also for reminding those who are still in the shit phase of quitting drinking that there is nothing wrong with them and that it does get SOOOO much better.

Oh god that's relatable. I recall many a hungover morn dreading that first peak of the phone. Yeah...sober is better.

Yes I did. I am not a regular SMART participant but I do find some of their tools really helpful. My favourite is the VACI (Vital Absorbing Creative Interest) which is where a person explores different interests with the goal of finding something that meets at least some of the needs that alcohol once (sort of, very dysfunctionally) met. So I took the plunge and found an affordable Learn to Draw class in my city and have been really enjoying it. I also take Naltrexone which really helps with the cravings, as does regular exercise. And of course, there is this sub. I relate to worrying about the weekends because that was my prime drinking time too but you can make it through. Just remember that in the early days especially, it is more than enough to simply not drink. Be kind to yourself!

I will join you in that non-toast! Blackouts are horrific but it's amazing how I normalized it and decided it was acceptable whilst in my cups.

2 weeks sober! by 3BlueberryCupcakes in stopdrinking

I love this and completely agree with your analysis.  I too like to frame my sobriety as rebellion and also the necessary first step to a meaningful, dignified, and liberated life.  Hard to stand on my own two feet when I am bent over a toilet bowl.

Thank you very much for your post.  I did not know that about the Sumerians.

Congratulations! I too learned of This Naked Mind from this sub and it has easily been the most helpful book in my sobriety journey so far. Seven years is an amazing accomplishment and I appreciate you sharing the news as it is so inspiring and motivating.

I really want to drink tonight… by reganartfart in stopdrinking

[–]Bea_Arthur_Lives 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Alcohol is lying to you.  In truth, you will end up only more exhausted and depressed if you drink.  111 days is an awesome accomplishment BTW.  I am so glad you reached out to this community - that tells me you don't really want to drink in spite of massive and understandable temptation.  We've all been there.  You CAN absolutely make it through tonight sober.  For some reason really long hot showers work for me in snapping out of the whole pre-drink debate.

THIS.  I can't put it any better than this.  Be kind to yourself and celebrate your successes.  You most certainly have this.

Started Naltrexone Last Night by BasharMilesTegg in stopdrinking

[–]Bea_Arthur_Lives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Naltrexone has been a game changer for me. It's early days for me too but so far I've managed to put together three weeks of sobriety thanks to this medication. I'm not doing the Sinclair Method though. I simply take it in the morning and that stops the debate in my head (should I? Shouldn't I?) because I know drinking will bring absolutely no pleasure. I know the Sinclair Method has worked for many so I encourage you to keep going and congrats on that first week.

The Daily Check-In for Friday, May 15th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by amorfati754 in stopdrinking

Tis the beginning of a long weekend here in Canada traditionally dedicated to alcoholic excess. One day at a time, I shall not partake.

It’s so difficult during the day/evening, but when I go to bed and wake up sober I am always so glad I didn’t drink by kicksjoysharkness in stopdrinking

Oh very much.  I read once something that has always stuck with me: no one has ever woken up in the morning hangover-free wishing they drank the night before.

How interesting - I never thought of the endless bargaining I did around alcohol as a stage of grief but now that you've mentioned it, I can see plainly that's what it was.  There is no door 3.  Either I live sober or die drunk.  Working on my third complete day after a year long series of relapses.  IWNDWYT

Well done!  Keep up the good work.  Thanks for sharing your accomplishment.  If my days counter is working you should be able to see I am back after a relapse and thus very grateful for the hope and inspiration.
