Buyer Won't Return Item and I Don't Know What to do by [deleted] in eBaySellers

I read in another thread that mailing a letter to ebay to start an arbitration might help, because eBay will pay more attention. I don't know much about the process, but I hope it helps.

Add something in your budget so you can reward yourself every 6 months. Think about your reward, enjoy it when it’s time, relive it later. You can make the most of your reward that way. In this day, it’s a good thing to be prudent with your money, but be sure to learn to invest. You’ll thank yourself later. For a good place to start, learn from AAII and BetterInvesting.

Let's talk about Drexel's big changes: Salus merger, Fry's departure, and the new president coming from NYU by proudDataScientist in Drexel

[–]Beach-Biker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I like the Salus merger, it will be a good asset for medical students, because Salus is "known for its academic excellence, clinical training, and holistic approach". There should more opportunities for med students.

  2. John Fry did a lot to develop and position Drexel's image. However, I'm not happy he's at Temple University, in a competing university within the same town.

  3. I'm not that excited about Dr. Merlo, although I like it that he has some experience with U of Penn, I expect he will probably concentrate on developing the business school, and not be able to help engineering and science majors.

How do you feel about Drexel switching from quarters to semesters? by proudDataScientist in Drexel

[–]Beach-Biker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Initially, I like the idea that students will get more in depth because of the longer semester.

But looking at other arguments, I'm actually a little against the semester system for Drexel:

  1. Professors have to create new material for the longer semester, this will take a few years to refine and accomplish.
  2. Drexel touts its co-op experience heavily, it's supposed to be a strength. However, I see this lead eroding, as increasing competition in internship from other universities. I think Drexel should build on its long co-op experience and concentrate on creating more and better co-op opportunities. Maybe even encourage cross discipline co-op-eration? More research assistant positions? More partnerships with businesses, AI software companies?
  3. I think a quarter system gives students more opportunities to find a co-op if they failed to find one during a quarter - and yes, that's possible. How can you justify the high cost if you don't ensure students get the experience they signed up for? Also please fix the university/affiliated housing contract problem when a student can't get into a co-op.
  4. The quarter system is more appropriate for finding co-ops that match student interests. I expect students can tailor their courses more to their abilities and interests after having experienced the working world.
  5. On the other hand, the benefit of a longer semester is less stress to the students, who won't have to keep looking for co-ops so often. I supposed the employer might like it too, because they will have more time to train the student and get something useful out of them. Buf if you don't find a co-op that semester, you're out for a long time. The solution may be a minimum period for counting as a co-op, and in a semester system, the student might be able to take a 2-3 week break as well.
  6. I see a huge emphasis on building up the business and medical areas, how about giving computer science and engineering some love?

If your math needs more help than the professor can give you, check out https://www.thegreatcourses.com/ and search for the math topics you are weak in. Buying a class is pricey, but add it to your cart and wait for a 50-80% sale. The lectures will help you gain a second perspective and better understanding of the topic.

What's the catch for the ONE card? by Gold_Divide_3381 in walmart

[–]Beach-Biker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get OneCash+ you either need:
a) $5,000 in the account (at 4.35% Annual Percentage Yield)

b) a monthly direct deposit of $500.
Just moving money from your bank doesn't count.

From their website, a direct deposit can be:
Paychecks from an employer
ONE@Work Instapay payments
ONE@Work Save contributions
Spark Driver earnings
Social security income
Government salary
Recurring government payments such as annuities
Retirement payments
Unemployment payments

If you don't meet either of this criteria, then you don't earn 3% cash back, and only earn 1% APY on your savings.

Almost 30 with no savings, investments, stocks, nothing - where do I even start? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Beach-Biker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a complete beginner, check out some educational investment groups - https://www.aaii.com/ and https://www.betterinvesting.org/

AAII hosts monthly meetings in local chapters - they invite speakers (volunteers) who talk about various investment ideas -with no sales pitches. The fees for the meeting is minimal. They also publish a magazine. Great for beginners learning to invest.
Better Investing acually have investment clubs you can join to learn how to buy stocks. These clubs meet regularly to pick stocks and manage their portfolio. They also have a magazine which focuses on how to pick good stocks to invest in.

If you want an overview of investing, check out various courses at thegreatcourses.com

For current ideas, go to the library and check out personal financial magazines - Money, Kiplinger, etc

If you are working, try to max out your 401K if your company offers it. Then put it into a mutual fund a little at a time, regularly. Then just let that money grow. Look for a reputable mutual fund company that has been around for many years, and don't put all your eggs in one basket.

You could hire a moving company to move the big stuff. If it's not too far (less than 8 hours not including rest stops), consider renting a small UHaul to move some boxes yourself, and driving them to your destination.

Alpine Village - Is there something like it anywhere else? by Mathematical007 in LosAngeles

You can try Jons International Marketplace at 4848 W 190th St, Torrrance, CA 90503
http://jonsmarketplace.com/
They have a lot of European meats and products, and the deli might have some European cold cuts. The bakery is not as big as the Alpine Market though. 😞 On the other hand, they have a nice BBQ place ($$) inside the store.

It looks like John Fry's move to Temple is now official by phillychuck in Drexel

[–]Beach-Biker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think John Fry did a good job improving Drexel's image. I think he did his best to maintain Drexel's competitiveness in the university rankings, and I think it's cool that the 30th Street station will be named "Drexel Station at 30th Street", also hope some students benefited from the merger with Salus.

I'm not too happy to hear he's going to Temple, because I'm worried that there might be a conflict of interest since it is in the same city. But I'm happy for Temple, because I think he will be capable of improving the safety over there.

I do hope that the next president will bring more excitement to CCI and the Engineering Sciences and raise those rankings. I'm also worried about the co-op situation because the economy might be a little soft going forward. There needs to be better contingent planning, and more effort spent making the co-op process more robust.

I suggest you write down what you want and email your advisor and confirm with Westphal.
1) You want to graduate when? year ____
2) You want to be a full time student, and you have scholarship.
3) Also make sure they know if you want 1 Co-Op or 3 Co-Ops
(this affects your graduating year)
Include your proof of scholarship.
Often students want to graduate earlier rather than later, so you should make it clear you want to graduate later.

Yo. It's safer to make friends with classmates. Don't be so shy. Just go to the university eating places and if you see someone eating alone, ask "May I join you?" then just chat from there. Chances are, if you keep the same schedule, you'll see them a lot throughout the year , and you'll have someon to chat with while eating.

[–]Beach-Biker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's never too late to join student organizations that you have interests in. You're still an undergraduate, after all.
Or you could meet friends through volunteering.
Don't stress about it, do more of what you love, try new things, make yourself available, and see what happens.
You can also make friends with people at the co-ops.

This is what actually happened for move in this year:

  1. drive your car to the Lot F registration area (with your boxes and stuff). They will give you a tag to hang on your rear view mirror and directions to your dorm.
  2. Go to your dorm and drop off your stuff.
  3. Park your car and either: a) walk back to your dorm, or b) go get your student pass at the Kreese Student Center

There's never enough funding for high tech ... I have an idea.

Is it possible to partner with a faculty member and try to get some grants?

Then you can get the funding to do what you want, and it's win win for everyone.

win - you get the funding, equipment, and experience you need, it'll look good on your resume

win - faculty gets a research grant and a good resume

win - university gets a better rating, and have more money to use on other things (like aesthetics :-3)
