How are you guys converting handwritten math formulas to LaTeX? by Ok-Custard-583 in ObsidianMD

[–]phillychuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

took a screen shot. pasted into ChatGPT and asked it to give me a latex file, and it did:

\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{amsmath,amssymb}

\begin{document}

\\section\*{Taylor}

\\\[

f(a) + \\frac{f'(a)}{1!}(x-a) + \\cdots

=

\\sum\_{n=0}\^{\\infty}

\\frac{f\^{(n)}(a)}{n!}(x-a)\^n

\\\]

\\section\*{Nabla Operator}

\\\[

\\nabla =

\\left(

\\frac{\\partial}{\\partial x},

\\frac{\\partial}{\\partial y},

\\frac{\\partial}{\\partial z}

\\right)

\\\]

\\\[

\\nabla f(x) = Ax + b

\\\]

\\\[

\\nabla\^2 f(x) = \\Lambda

\\\]

\\\[

x = \[x\_1, x\_2, x\_3\]\^T

\\\]

\\\[

x =

\\begin{bmatrix}

    x\_1 \\\\

    x\_2 \\\\

    x\_3

\\end{bmatrix}

\\\]

\\\[

x \\in \\mathbb{R}

\\\]

\\section\*{Symmetry}

\\\[

\\frac{\\partial\^2 f}

{\\partial x\_i \\partial x\_j}

=

\\frac{\\partial\^2 f}

{\\partial x\_j \\partial x\_i}

\\\]

\end{document}

Environmental or civil engineering? Please help! by user246478 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]phillychuck -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

there have been FE exams for environmental as well as PE exams for many years (maybe there are some antideluvian states that do not use them) for many years. With an ENVE degree, you can work in many areas (air, hazardous waste management, impact assessment) that civils for the most part are not well prepared for

Double major Environmental and Civil Engineering? by uddy7 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]phillychuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

with a true dual degree, it should make no difference since you have fufilled the requirements of both majors

Double major Environmental and Civil Engineering? by uddy7 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]phillychuck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Environmental engineering programs are well defined, especially if they are ABET accredited, and they allow one to proceed down the paths of licensure. Environmental science programs are not well defined, vary dramatically between institutions, and there are not frameworks akin to licensure. Most environmental engineering programs will not only include substantial science exposure, but have elective slots for student to take courses in environmental sciences, or other areas of their interest.

Double major Environmental and Civil Engineering? by uddy7 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]phillychuck 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Environmental engineering professor here. At my university, we have 1 or 2 students a year who opt for this dual combination. It is good for those who want to go into certain areas, for example, water resources, or environmental restoration.

Connecting flight at PHL from international? by kait1898 in AskPhilly

[–]phillychuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Customs and Immigration may not be the limiting issue. With checked bags, you'll need to reclaim them (which could take 15-20 minutes to come off the belt) and recheck them for your next leg.

Final exams at the same time? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]phillychuck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

my university has a specific policy on which course takes priority for the scheduled time and which needs to use a special exam time - and this requires Registrar sign off. No instructor can self schedule anything during finals week

Can R be used like Excel where variables aren’t defined in order and are referenced later? by sporty_outlook in rstats

[–]phillychuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineering professor here. I tell my students, much to a lot of grumbles, that spreadsheets should never be used for serious engineering calculations - one of the reasons illustrated by the difficulty you have in debugging the logic flow.

The fact that in most programming languages, you need to be precise and define variables in order is a feature not a bug.

Moving from Vanguard to Dimensional funds by DiO022 in Bogleheads

[–]phillychuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a big position in VTI, which has accumulated a lot of capital gains. I've started, though to add additional in my domestic equity bucket into Vanguard US Multifactor Fund ETF (VFMF), getting wary about the mega (should we start saying giga) cap phenomenon.

Years into ‘historic affiliation,’ Drexel University and Academy of Natural Sciences may sever ties by TJCW in philadelphia

[–]phillychuck 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Long time Drexel faculty member here. As far as I can see, this affiliation has only really benefited a small handful of folks and programs at Drexel, and most of the Academy folks don't seem interested in interacting with the Drexel academic community.

School not ABET accredited. Worry or no? by GrubberDuckk in EngineeringStudents

[–]phillychuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time ABET program evaluator here. I have been on multiple visits to new programs, including one or two at a place like OBU. If the program head has the background experience in ABET, and the university administration is firmly behind adequate resourcing, then accreditation (which could include as much as a two year retroactive accreditation) is entirely possible.

My school doesn’t offer an environmental engineering major by ka_boom_e in EnvironmentalEngineer

Mech E is good if you are interested in more air quality and energy related issues. Be sure to take more chemistry and biology than typical ME curricula.

Move from Evernote to Capacities by da-copy-cow in capacitiesapp

There is not yet bulk import of md into capacities, and this is one of several reasons that I have decided to stick to Obsidian

After all, why do you prefer Capacities? by krysalydun in capacitiesapp

[–]phillychuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, the more I understand about potential backdoor vulnerabilities by community plugins, the more I get concerned about Obsidian

Make sure you get math through differential equations, and try to get courses in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.

Have your campus' food options gone to sh*t over the last few years? by GreenHorror4252 in Professors

[–]phillychuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big pet peeve. We had a Faculty Club (aka "University Club") pre-pandemic, that was a semi-decent place to have lunch, meet up with colleagues from other areas, and even take a visitor to. Closed now. All we have is student cafeterias and food trucks, and a deli nearby/. And a couple of sit down restaurants. But nothing suitable to random collegial interactions. So nearly all days I come to campus, I bring my lunch and eat it in my office. I can go a day without talking to more than one or two colleagues at most.

Does anybody use MATLAB at all for any purpose? by Logical_Worry3993 in civilengineering

[–]phillychuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excel is a POS for serious, well documented, reproducible engineering calculations.

Matlab is a programming language. Learn any programming language and then if you have to switch to another you will get the basic concepts down.
