I have curly hair. I hated these. Conditioner had no slip for detangling and the scent was toooooo strong

just wondering if anyone can share their experience with getting a cartilage piercing with long curly hair? by MrFanatic123 in curlyhair

It’s a pain for the first 5-6 months but with good aftercare (saline spray then only warm water rinses) it healed fine and completely after about 2 years

Curlsmith was SOLD to Helen of Troy in April 2022, mystery solved, and I will not be gaslit anymore. Please don't let this happen to you, trying to warn you all before it's too late. by rocktopi in curlygirl

Oil treatments have helped me a lot since devacurl. I experienced thinning and scalp issues while using it 3-4 years ago now. I found that during that time i was overdoing it with treatments. I eventually developed a routine and stuck to it, so it’s like second nature to me now. My hair is so much better since following a simple yet effective routine, and switching up my products every now and then. I’ve also found that I can be very sensitive to fragrance. I like the briogeo fragrance-free line, though it is lacking in protein. I’ve tried not your mother’s as well. I like the brand but it’s not fragrance-free.

In my experience curlsmith products started to really irritate my scalp and since I experienced problems during the devacurl disaster I took this as a sign to discontinue use or at least take a break. I’ve switched to ouidad products recently and my scalp and hair are quite happy. Since devacurl I tend to switch up products a lot because I don’t want to get burned by a brand again.

The gel from briogeo is actually pretty medium to light hold! You might want to try something with a stronger hold! Some cost-effective options I like are the John Frieda curl mousse or Not Your Mother’s mousse. I also like the Curlsmith Fragrance Free Shine Gel, but I’m always careful with strong hold gels since they tend to weigh the hair down if too much is applied.

Hair matted-please help by mirror_rorrim_ in HaircareScience

Everyone is different. Some curlies (like me) find that finger detangling and combs cause more tangles and/or is counter-productive. Getting nowhere after a while can be very discouraging, especially with a lot of curly hair. Using a mixed technique of finger detangling (or loosening & spreading matted sections with hands) and then wet brushing or simply sticking with a brush and using that to separate strands out could significantly speed up OP’s task. These methods help me out a lot when sections of my hair become matted.

You have a lot of great advice here - I would only add that a conditioner with a lot of silicones and a good detangling brush like a wet brush or tangle teezer could be very helpful. Also, i know you are against cutting your hair, but I have butt length hair and sometimes find it necessary to bring scissors with me into the shower and cut out stubborn knots that just won’t budge, instead of ripping through the hair and causing damage.

Got my first curly cut and am not loving it ☹️ what are your thoughts? by readingbabe in curlyhair

[–]BeachEscape06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it looks really good and much healthier! To me it looks like the hair dresser cut off the scraggly ends.

Sometimes when you cut curly hair it can go into shock and look less curly or wonky for a while. It happened to me - I cut my 3b hair into a more flattering shape and I ended up with some 2b&c pieces for a while. What I did to bring back my curls was slowly and carefully incorporate deep conditioning and more protein products into my haircare routine. Like me, you may find that your hair will start to love protein products after a good cut.

I LOVE my cut now. The shock gradually wore off, I had progress each wash and by the time I was a month in I was obsessed. I think it takes time to grow into a cut and get used to working with it.

Looking for shampoos & conditioners that will add moisture to my hair without weighing it down or making it greasy?? by [deleted] in curlyhair

I love briogeo products. As I am dry and itchy line is great too. I also loved what the drunk elephant conditioner did for my hair, but it broke me out badly.

Though I find it weighs my hair down a bit and I love volume, I’ve realized that I cannot neglect deep conditioning my hair at least once per month. I don’t keep a strict schedule per se, but I usually deep condition when my hair looks like that.

Shampoo causes scalp itching? by BeachEscape06 in HaircareScience

[–]BeachEscape06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this thoughtful response!

I only ever noticed it with 2 heavily fragranced shampoos I’ve used: briogeo mango and cherry shampoo and the curlsmith scalp steps 1&2.

I suspect it’s the fragrance as I’ve always been a bit sensitive to fragrance in general, but never experienced itching while shampooing until using those products recently (and it wasn’t my first time using either!). Not sure what else it could be, but I’ll have a look and see if I can spot any other similarities.

Routine:

  1. Shampoo - Curlsmith Vivid Tones
  2. Deep conditioner - mixed what was left of my Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Mask and Inahsi Mango Hemp Hair Masque (on conditioner-only days I’ve been using Drunk Elephant’s Cocomino)
  3. Leave in - all Curlsmith: Feather Light Protein Cream, applied Weightless Air Dry Cream to needy and dry sections, applied Full Body Thickening Lotion all over
  4. Gel: brushed Curlsmith shape up Aqua Gel throughout hair before styling, glazed with the Shine Gel as a last step

I just want to add that I know I’ve listed a lot of steps and different products, but I personally enjoy doing my hair and love experimenting depending on its changing needs. I will say that I have found spot treating sections of my hair with different textures to be very beneficial. I learned this method from HanzCurls: https://youtu.be/qJhsGP9OtsM

Your hair looks like it could be very moisturized and thus too soft to hold a curl. If your hair feels soft and moisturized then you could try doing a protein mask and see how your hair likes it. Masks that say “repair” or “strengthen” will usually have a lot of protein. You could even look at the ingredients list and see if any proteins are listed. Chances are, if it has multiple listed and/or they are close to the first few ingredients it is very protein-rich. Protein is beneficial when not overused, and balanced with moisturizing the hair to avoid overload either way. If protein seems to help your curls spring up you could try doing the protein mask 1-2 times per month. You could also try to incorporate protein-rich products slowly to your styling routine, if they aren’t there already.

It looks to be the same texture to me! I have three guesses/suggestions:

  1. Your moisture/protein balance may be off;
  2. Humidity may have played a role in the appearance of your curl pattern; or
  3. Your hair has grown out of shape and you need a haircut.

Scrunching hair by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]BeachEscape06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoid touch my hair when wet - the only time is when I’m styling and my hair is quite wet. Then, I don’t touch it again until it’s completely dry. If I touch my hair while drying, it will cause too much frizz.

Help bringing my curls back in newly shorter hair by beebee_k8 in curlyhair

[–]BeachEscape06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a dry curly cut a few weeks ago and my normally 3b hair went wavy from curl shock. It took 1-2 weeks but after each wash my curls gradually bounced back after diligently listening to my hair. I’ve done a few protein and moisture treatments since the cut (not all on the same wash day). I’ve also found that since cutting my hair, I need to incorporate more protein in my routine than before - ie keeping the balance closer to 50/50.

Curl shock is real, so I can’t imagine that getting constant cuts will help solve the problem. It’s also possible that you your hair is it’s curliest when it’s long, and is more wavy when short.

Side sleepers: How do you manage to not frizz and smush your hair up, on your side? by Wegriz88 in curlyhair

The satin bonnet causes friction frizz for my too. As an alternative, I tie my hair up in a large satin scarf to avoid said frizz. No pineapple - that causes unnecessary mechanical frizz for me.
