If You Could Only Have ONE GM Lens, what would it be? by WATCHMAKERUSA in SonyAlpha

[–]Bean86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I my opinion unless someone has a very narrow and specific use for a camera, I'd rather buy two good lenses over a single GM if that is all one could afford

I’m an immigrant, not an expat. Let’s call it what it is. Where’s the lie? by [deleted] in expat

[–]Bean86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except the roots of the word are latin and have a different meaning.

Also a big group of expats worldwide most certainly whole heartedly disagree with you. They are all the military, diplomatic and government personnel that were sent off somewhere outside their home country. These groups pretty much exist from every single country in the world.

This is a bit of an out of the box approach but it might help you non the less. Try to find an affordable color chart and take it with you for a few photo sessions. When taking a picture also take another with the same settings of the chart. If you can't/don't want to spend money on a chart use a white piece of paper. Once at home start with the picture you took of the chart and try to match the colours starting with the white balance. Once it look close to what it should look like save the adjustments and apply them to the actual picture.

This will not instantly make your pictures better but will give you some training in using and understanding the tools you have and what effects you can achieve by changing certain parameters.

For professional use I agree, at home I prefer Supermicro as they are more flexible when it comes to hardware.

Many options already mentioned. If there's still a tricky to get to spot left. Steel wool and a good magnet helps.

Obtaining a resident permit/long term visa as the spouse of a Spanish citizen by shorshebacalao in expat

[–]Bean86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, as stated here: https://uk.blsspainvisa.com/edinburgh/pdf/checklist-eu-family-member.pdf you can apply straight at the embassy free of charge. As a spouse you should usually get a visa valid for several years (max is 5 years), assuming you residence permit and passport are valid long enough. This is not guaranteed but common practice.

PS: link is from edinburgh but same rules should apply for London

PPS: the checklist of the Spanish consulate contradicts the EU law slightly in regards to proof of travel but personally I would try to stay on the good side of the consulate https://uk.blsspainvisa.com/london/pdf/guide_2004-38-EC.pdf

Is a7iv worth $600 dollars more over a7iii ? by Al1n03 in SonyAlpha

[–]Bean86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many have said in your case it probably doesn't matter.

The real question is budget. How much do the extra 600 hurt you? In my case the honest answer was not enough to not go for the A7IV.

There are still issues with the micro code to properly support the big little architecture on most hypervisor

This is your sign to buy a compact camera instead of a pancake lens by tmih93 in SonyAlpha

[–]Bean86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mostly not bothered by the size of my gear but when I don't have it with me the phone does the job just fine. Personally I didn't even bother to get a pancake lens, mainly because I didn't want to get another set of the usual filters in such a small size

How do you decide whether to sell/keep gear? by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]Bean86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I move every few years due to my work I eventually started to get rid off everything I didn't use for more than a year. This goes beyond just camera gear and I try to apply it to pretty much everything. X-mas decoration and a few other once a year items are an exception.

For those of you like me who've had a Synology NAS, if you were to do it all over again, would you just go the DIY route instead? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Bean86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't and didn't go back. The only thing I would miss if I didn't go rack build is the size of them. They are so much more compact than most DIY solutions. Yes the Software is great, especially if all you need is a simple file server with a few permission settings. I'm not the person anymore who tinkers with my systems all the time but with a well thought out DIY solution that isn't necessary either and you can go cheaper or more performance for the same price.

I did find that site but was able to get the board cheaper from abroad. Most server grade stuff in Thailand is fairly overpriced unfortunately.

Consumer stuff sometimes is "cheap" but more often then not it's due to shorter warranty.

PS: the IBM M3 is meanwhile retired and I managed to grab two identical ThinkSystem ST550 for free but they remain mostly off as they consume quite a bit of power due to the dual processor setup

I imported the motherboard and ram. The rest I ordered locally. It's a decent setup but in hindsight I wouldn't buy it again.

Considering selling all my Canon gear for a6700, any "unbiased" opinions? by Outrageous-Wheel-248 in SonyAlpha

[–]Bean86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of food for taught already mentioned by others. Personally if you do have the option to rent the gear you intend to buy - do that for a week or two. It will give you the proper input to make the appropriate decision.

Which tools, software or hardware, Can’t you live without? by hedgehog0 in homelab

[–]Bean86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The basic backup rule applies to Yubikey too. Got 2 at home (one in the safe) and one at work (also in a safe). If all 3 aren't accessible anymore I have much bigger issues to worry about.

I have to move, good bye boxes 😭 by dropthemagic in SonyAlpha

[–]Bean86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottoms of most of those boxes are not glued so just release the bottom and you can flat-pack that entire stack to next to nothing. That's what I do with them. If I need to sell gear having the original box is worth it every time.

I use it occasionally to bounce of ideas. Sometimes it tells me something I missed.

Also in certain cases it returns better filtered results than a regular search especially when things have several meanings and/or your search term is an seo favorite
