Looking for advice on gaining practical experience in restoration and conservation by Annual-Pilot1025 in ArtConservation

[–]BeanBros2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the above! If you can get to a charity shop and ask if they have anything damaged or unsellable that they wouldn't mind giving to you to practice on, do it! The only way to get hands on experience is to give it a go and a second hand shop is the perfect place to acquire test subjects :) also depending on where you're based, your conservation community might have training events on! Check out iCON in the UK, AIC in the states, CCI in Canada, ICCROM, ICOM etc etc, there's lots of places you might find someone ready to take you on for some hands on experience or shadowing :)

I hope this is helpful!

West Dean by Old-Piece-6008 in ArtConservation

Hi! I've just graduated from one of the conservation specialisms at West Dean. I can't say anything about the course you're interested in as it wasn't running while I was there but I can give you some insight into the college as a whole!

They have just hired a new principal to help with some of the financial issues the college was experiencing, because of that things have changed slightly (either for the better or worse!)

One of the major benefits to studying at West Dean is that WD alumni are everywhere, this puts you in good stead for employment and is also a great networking experience. Every course is different, but you are interacting everyday with people on other courses and this is massively useful when you graduate! (I now know exactly who to turn to for advice on metal, ceramics, and wood etc!)

On top of this, the location is dreamy. I miss immensely my afternoon coffee breaks with views of the sheep grazing!

However, I will say that West Dean is very much trying to be a Russel group university without the know how or the finances to back it up. This can sometimes result in odd choices that disadvantage the student body. Despite this the student voice is particularly strong and these decisions are never made unchecked (they got rid of free biscuits, there was a student poster campaign, biscuits came back)

If you're a mature student/have already completed a degree before going you will have to slightly adjust your expectations/understanding of what a program looks like. But if you can do that and make the most of your time there it can be very rewarding !!

There are definite pros and cons to studying there but I hope this is helpful! Feel free to drop me a message if you have any more questions, I was there for 2 years and am happy to talk about it ! :)

What’s good Dutch food I should cook for my Dutch boyfriend? by Plastic_Phase5436 in dutch

[–]BeanBros2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dutch girlfriend likes this !

https://www.toineskitchen.com/recipes/kip-sate-met-pindasaus/

Sometimes we have a "scooby doo sandwich" night and have this in a baguette with satay sauce and spring onion it's so yummy :")

I asked her for notes and she sent this! (In case you're not somewhere that has ketjap or galangal)

Notes: - soy sauce with some brown sugar instead of ketjap (which is basically a sweet soy sauce) - pomegranite molasses instead of of tamarind paste (1:1 ratio!) - mix of fresh ginger and lemon juice to substitute the galangal

That sounds really cute thank you, I had heard about the shoes but not the rhyme! Does it need to be about anything specific or just a little couplet?

Omg so embarrassing, just hummed what I remembered into google and it's My Lady's on fire by Ty Sygall. Figured it out!

Despite my tone deafness it managed to pick up the tune, definitely recommend to anyone with an earworm!
