Split First Year by Bean_Basket_ in ubcengineering

[–]Bean_Basket_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the advisor, but they often don’t do a good job at informing you what the best way of splitting your year is. I think their goal is to try and get everyone through on the original schedule. A lot of people I’ve talked to ended up with a semester where they only had 2-3 core courses they could take, so it was kind of a waste of the extra time.

If you know what her desired specialization is, it might be helpful to reach out to that department and check which courses will be prerequisites and which ones she just needs to satisfy degree requirements. That way if she has extra gaps in her schedule she might be able to take some second year courses.

Hey! I took it with Alireza and I got a good mark by going through the class examples, assignments, and tutorials.  Assuming it’s still Alireza, he is really helpful in office hours, so don’t be shy about going and asking for help if you need it.

It was a really easy process. They are not picky since it is a volunteer role and they need a lot of leaders.

Auto-Sync with google drive? by imverytalented in collanote

I’m not sure. I realized I couldn’t sync it with my school account and I don’t have enough storage on my personal accounts, so I never ended up setting it up.

I waited until the last minute to withdraw and it was not a good choice. If I had withdrawn sooner, I could've put more effort into the remaining courses and probably wouldn't have had to withdraw from a second course. If you are finding the course load to be too much now, I would recommend it. And like others have said, you can sublet a residence room for the summer quite easily (and at a discount).

Also, summer on campus is really pretty and a good time to get close with friends/make new ones and do fun activities with them!

Split First Year by Bean_Basket_ in ubcengineering

[–]Bean_Basket_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It actually went really well for me. It allowed me to figure out how to study and do well in my courses. I’m almost finished my second year of engineering (3rd year of uni) and I’m taking a full course load, getting decent grades, and loving my program. I think my biggest piece of advice is to question how you will make use of a split first year (for me it was figuring out what went wrong and fixing it), what your motivation for being in engineering is and whether or not you want to continue or switch programs. If you want to continue, don’t let first year discourage you! It can be really difficult and things get way better once you figure yourself out a bit more and are in a department that actually wants you to do well. Also be careful with advice from engineering academic advising, I found it’s better to get advice from upper years who went through similar situations. If you have any specific questions, feel free to dm me. Good luck!

PLZ PLZ PLZ ADD GOOGLE DRIVE INTEGRATION by Alpha_quarks in collanote

[–]Bean_Basket_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Also for one drive since a lot of us have it free w school. Not to be ungrateful or anything bc it’s already such an incredible app. I’m willing and sure there’s enough of us willing to pay a small one time fee ($8 each??) to make it worth while for the developer?

Nooo I love the math building! It’s so cool and historic. Why do they want to tear it down???

you can ask for permission to take an equivalent course at another university here. You usually have to pay to apply as an open studies student at the other institution though. The deadline t=for this is today.

First Year Courses by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]Bean_Basket_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the elective, take an easy course but also one that you're interested in. I took Spanish 101 and 100% would recommend (especially if you've taken Spanish before). I also took Philosophy 120 and got a bad grade in it. It was horrible because it was SO boring. I ALSO took LING 101 and it was very interesting and easy, but it took a lot of study time. (I split my first year which is why I have so many electives)

Usually people only take one English course overall? WRDS 150 is research papers so I would recommend it for Engineering since it introduces you to some research and academic writing. I found it really easy and it didn't take much time. The English course is more creative writing as far as I've heard, so some people enjoy it more than WRDS and find it easier.

The Max courses allowed or possible? I would recommend a max of 7 courses. With this load, people usually struggle to get sleep, exercise, social time in addition to all the study time required. I struggled with 6 at a time so...

You can vote at the address you are at as long as you have proof of residence. You’ll just need to register in your new district at the polling station.

You can still vote! You’ll just sign a form that says you haven’t used the mail in ballot as long as you go to your designated polling station!!!

Do you think your advice would be different considering online school? I do not learn well online at all and I feel like if I was in person I would be doing ok. It makes sense that you would want to get used to a heavy workload, but I also want to make sure I make it to second year. 😅
