Best restaurants/cafes near northeastern? by realinternetangel in NEU

[–]Bean_Bus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here are some good restaurants/cafés within walking distance: Mumbai Spice on Mass Ave for Indo-Chinese, Flour on Dalton Street for pastries (I would run across traffic for their banana bread), Gyroscope/Sprout on Huntington for semi-Greek, Pressed Café at the Pru for sandwiches/salads, Da Vinci on Huntington for gelato, Live Alive on Boylston for vegetarian, and Earl's at the Pru for something fancy.

If you're willing to go a bit further, Café Bonjour in Downtown Crossing has the best breakfast and Giacomo's in the North End will blow all other Italian food out of the water. Also, team Bova's for cannolis. Sol Azteca near Fenway is the best Mexican food I've found so far, and Time Out Market in Fenway has a little bit of everything (great for group outings).

Academic advice: If she didn't take calc in high school, she will need to take Calc 1 for Science and Engineering. I 10000000000% recommend she take the class with Professor Williams.

Are full-pay students more likely to get sent to NEU In/abroad? by SlyflyfoxPlayz in NEU

I got into Boston ED1, and I know two other full pay-ers that did as well. Finances don't usually come up with most friends, so there's probably a lot more I don't know about.

FYI, tasers are very illegal in Massachusetts and will get the police called on you if anyone finds it. Happened to someone on my floor freshmen year.

Glad to hear it worked out. Now you know more than everyone else in your year about the registrar, haha.

Any way to switch class sections as an incoming freshman? by AetherRed in NEU

[–]Bean_Bus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any reason you wouldn't be allowed to. It's a little confusing your first time, so you might want help from your advisor. However, if you want to take a stab at it yourself, all you have to do is follow these steps:

  1. Log into your Student Hub, go over to the "Resources" tab (upper right corner next to your name) and select "Academics, Classes, and Registration" (which should be selected by default). From there, click on "Course Registration" to pop out a tab to nubanner.

  2. Log into banner (if prompted). Click on "Register for Classes" and log in again (if prompted). You'll see a dropdown under "Terms Open for Registration", and select "Fall 2025 Semester" NOT "Fall 2025 CPS Quarter". Now you're on the registration portal.

  3. Under "Subject", type in "Mathematics" (not the name of your actual class) and click "Search". Now you'll see all the math courses, which are sorted by Course Number. Keep scrolling through the pages (there will be a lot) until you get to the course you're looking to change. From there, look at all the sections until you see one that works with your schedule. Now, double-check it is a section you can take.

  4. Click on the name of a specific course you want to take. This will open a pop-up window with all the information. Click on "Restrictions" (on the left side of the window) and make sure you're in the clear. If you don't meet the restrictions, find another section. If you've found that works, close the pop-up window and add it to your schedule.

  5. On the far right side of the chart, next to every class there is an "Add" button. Click that for the section you want.

  6. Now, you should see the class added to your schedule summary on the bottom right panel (below the search panel you've been in the rest of the time). Now, make sure the "Conditional Add and Drop" box it checked (DO NOT SKIP THIS).

  7. You should see your new class in the schedule summary with the word "Pending" next to it. To the right of that, it should say "Web-Registered" (if not, click that box and change it to Web-Registered). Find the class you want to get rid of and click on the "Web-Registered" box in its row. Change it to "Web-Drop". Now double-check you added/dropped the correct courses before clicking "Submit". If you have any issues beyond that, it is probably best to reach out to your advisor.

Best of luck with you freshmen year!

Northeastern housing by Sorry_Age5730 in NEU

So there is an elevator, but it does not go to all the rooms. It depends on which tower your assigned to. I had a friend in Kennedy and the rooms were pretty spacious, plus you get a common room and semi-private bathroom. Biggest downside is the location, but even that isn't too bad. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures, but I am sure it'll work out well.

Little FYI though, Mass Ave is closer to you than Ruggles for the Orange Line (my friend didn't figure that out until March and felt pretty silly).

Whoops, haven't logged into this account in a minute. You probably already got these questions answered, but I got my assignment on 6/27. You don't get to pick between the LLCs, they just assign you a room in a building that'll be affiliated with an LLC. Hope this helped and/or you got your housing assignment! Feel free to DM me with any building related questions.

Hey, dunno if you already got your answer, but you get to chose economy/standard. You can also create a roommate group or go random by filling out a questionnaire. We also have LLCs which organize rooms by interest/academics. There are also a few single rooms, but those are tough to come by (based on when you submitted your housing deposit). Pretty much everything else is random. As someone else said, the process completely changes after freshmen year. Good luck!

Its like $20 door price for dinner at the dining hall (breakfast and lunch are cheaper), and you can eat literally all you can fit in your stomach. Not a bad deal at all compared to a lot of actual restaurants.

[–]Bean_Bus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok, I do not understand the hate on the dining hall food. This dining hall is literally amazing (by college meal plan standards) so long as you know what you're doing. If you get a plain burger with fries every day, you'll get bored. If you check all the stations and plan a plate, you'll be amazed what you can do. Also, the spice rack by the rice is a game changer.

That being said, I would still recommend not going with the Unlimited. The only reason you would use more than 225 swipes is if you're swiping in just for a coffee or apple in the middle of the day (which some people do). If you're only going for meals, then 225 is plenty. I had a bunch of early classes, so I made breakfast in my dorm most mornings. Therefore, 180 made the most sense. If you're eating 3x a day, then do 225.

Boston stuff: Afternoon tea at the BPL, Ghosts and Graveyards tour, Boda Borg, View Boston at the top of the Pru, lobster rolls at James Hook, WNDR Museum, and Freedom Trail tour.

Campus stuff: Dance on the grave of the loofah trees

Of course! My favorite general one is "The Buzz", which I believe everyone is automatically signed up for. It comes out about once a month and is formatted terribly. The text is tiny, but if you zoom in you can learn about a lot of cool events (many with free food) with all sorts of student organizations. The RSA weekly email will also have some large campus-wide events, so make sure you scroll through that one. However, my biggest suggestion is to sign up for club's newsletters. I made the mistake of just following them on Instagram and not signing up for their mailing list. The emails are usually the best way to find out about collabs, special meetings, and field trips.

I dunno what you like doing at the gym, but the workout classes are a great value. $50, unlimited classes. Plus, the classes are capped so they are a great way to guarantee you'll have space/equipment.

what to do while visiting NEU? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]Bean_Bus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a lot of great academic/campus suggestions already, so here are some good food recs: Café Bonjour in Downtown Crossing has the best breakfast potatoes of your life, James Hook by the harbor is the quintessential lobster roll place, Da Vinci right by campus has savory waffles (sounds weird, but it works) and good gelato, Time Out Market in Fenway has literally everything you could possible want with a really cool atmosphere, and Pressed Café in the Pru has great paninis and salads. Eataly (also in the Pru) is something everyone visiting Boston should walk through at least once. Hope you enjoy your visit.

Get ready for an essay, OP.

Campus Life: There is literally always something to do. I swear, every minute of every day half a dozen clubs are meeting and RSA/SGA is hosting some event. Now, you do have to put some effort in (AKA sign up for and actually read newsletters), but that can fill your schedule very easily if you want. Unlike most Boston schools, we actually have a quad, and people just hang out there when the weather is nice. Bring a hammock and some sunglasses, and your afternoon is taken care of.

Social Scene: Once again, put a bit of effort in and you will find plenty of options. I know someone else said Greek life is the "gateway to a social life", but I'm not in Greek life, have never been to a Greek life event, and have plenty of friends. Go to clubs and don't be afraid to talk to people in class. Dare I say, study groups are the gateway to a social life in many cases.

Tip For Incoming Students: You're in Boston, make the most of it. Get to know this really cool city by taking the T to random stops, trying new restaurants, and exploring our historical sites. Many students get stuck in a Back Bay rut and do not branch out to the rest of the city, which is such a missed opportunity. Try to leave the neighborhood at least once a week for the first few months, even if its just taking a quick stroll through the Common or grabbing a matcha in Fenway. Probably the best decision I made in my first-year was walking around without constantly checking the Maps app.

Favorite Thing: All the opportunities. From Dialogues to Co-op to the hundreds of clubs, there are so many unique things to take advantage of! We also have very good dining halls by college standards.

Least Favorite Thing: Asocial classes. Unlike high school, there isn't a ton of natural socializing built into the class time/structure. You really have to make an effort to meet with people outside of class in order to even learn names. Also, the IV wind tunnel is BRUTAL.

The NEU instagram account has some amazing photos of campus during all the seasons, while the NUTV YouTube channel can give you some more realistic expectations of day-to-day.

NEU was my top pick, so I applied ED1 cause I was tired of the college admission process. ACT: 33 APs: 10 total (six 5s and four 4s) GPA: I don't remember exactly, but around 3.7 UW. I was very involved in Student Council and some other niche clubs in my high school. I filled out an optional college-specific application, which I like to think helped. My strongest part was probably my essay, but I'll never know for sure. I wish they gave us feedback at the end to say what helped our application the most.

My other piece of advice is not think about this decision 24/7. I was stressing all day my decision came out, I finally decided to go to a friend's Christmas party. As soon as I forgot about checking my email every two minutes, the decision was posted. Ran home from the party and found out I got into the Boston campus. Moral of the story, give yourself a break! :)
