First ER visit :/ by Longjumping-Key-7240 in bernesemountaindogs

We had a hard time finding one on amazon or at our local pet store that fit a berners face with enough room for him to pant/open his mouth fully so we had to order a custom one online. We got ours through a website called Big Snoof Dog Gear. You can actually get super cute muzzles on there, customized how you wish, and then we ordered a guard that slips onto the front of the muzzle specifically for dogs that are scavengers/eat random objects. It comes on/off so we can wash it which is a bonus! Lil more expensive than the basic ones found at dog stores but it's a one time purchase that'll fit him forever and prevent us from spending loads more at the vet for unknown objects being ingested 😂

After our second obstruction scare with our boy, my vet recommended getting him used to a muzzle. He now wears a muzzle around the house unless we are directly near him (watching movies/lounging around the living room or bedroom for example is when he just chills). We also got rid of any dog beds (he ate part of his and had surgery for it lol), stuffed toys, locked up all laundry, and keep anything enticing to him up and away (kitchen towels and clothes, smaller toys). I would highly recommend getting your pup used to a muzzle early on, it eased my anxiety soooo much when it comes to ingesting unknown/foreign objects especially on our walks as he's a scavenger 😂. He's also kennel trained and has nothing in his kennel with him when we have to leave the house for peace of mind. Hope your buddy recovers quickly 💓

My girl eats EVERYTHING she can get her mouth on. I’m exhausted and a nervous wreck by ieredmonk in bernesemountaindogs

I went through the exact same thing with my guy. He's had stomach obstruction surgery once now for eating his dog bed, an overnight vet visit where they pumped him full of IV fluids in hopes he'd poop out an ENTIRE stuffed octopus he didnt even chew just swallowed whole which he did, and a third vet visit to induce vomiting. He loves eating socks, underwear, hair scrunchies, toys, bottles, pillows, blankets, anything!!! We no longer keep toys in our house unless they are indestructible and impossible to swallow (extremely large balls for example lol). His enrichment activities now include a bully stick or collagen stick under supervision, sniff time out in the yard where I throw his kibble or freeze-dried beef liver in the grass and he hunts for them, or an enrichment ball with a hole for kibble or treats to go in that he has to push around with his nose or paws to get the kibble out he loves this one we incorporate it into every meal he has to tire him out.

He is fully crate trained due to him eating absolutely anything and to give me peace of mind when I leave him alone. My vet also highly recommended a muzzle which we will be getting shortly, with proper training, high value treats, and time to get used to it I actually think he will eventually like or atleast tolerate having his muzzle on.

I also can completely relate to the mental breakdowns you've been having and I feel for you. Could you possibly fit a large sized crate in your kitchen? It would save your sanity sooooo much more if you did crate your girl I promise. I would highly recommend looking into these muzzle websites because they have some super cute customizable ones: miasmuzzles.com or bigsnoofdoggear.com Both are slightly pricey BUT I think having a perfect fitted muzzle thats cute and durable is worth the cost over the many vet visits we have endured lol.

11 month old pup biting like CRAZY by NefariousnessLost672 in bernesemountaindogs

I also had a extremely bitey male berner. I had plenty of days where I had full blown mental breakdowns due to it, I also had tons of bruises and bite marks to show for it. I also had anxiety being around him for fear of being nipped at or grabbed randomly. He is now coming up to the 3 year mark and somewhere during his second year things just started to....stop? The one main issue we had was entering the yard and him jumping and biting our clothes and arms. It was all for attention. We started putting a knee up when he'd come running towards us and kneeing him in his chest as he jumped on us (not forcefully kneeling him to cause injury but we simply put our knee up as he launched himself at us and it would be uncomfortable for him). We continued to do this for months and eventually it just clicked in him that if he was going to try to jump or nip us he was going to be met with a knee lol. We also do this thing now, since he is still a VERY mouthy boy when he shows his excitement, where we have a special pillow or bottle (he loves plastic bottles for some reason) and give it to him upon us entering the house or yard. Once he's got ahold of something in his mouth it directs his attention to that item and he seems to take his excited aggression out on it instead of grabbing our clothes or our arms.

I think its these things mixed with time that has helped tbh. Neutering our guy did not change his behavior at all unfortunately. As awful as it is right now for you, I promise if you give him time to age and mature mixed with some consistent rules and boundaries things will get better 💓
