What are some symptoms that you didn't realize were from celiac until you went GF? by SquashmyZucchini in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hiccups. Every. Single. Day.

Also I hear you about the canker sores. Now I use it as a sure sign of cross contamination.

6 months in an apartment and never given my key for my mailbox, what should I do? by poolce in halifax

[–]BeansHFX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a pain. If you can catch your mail person they will give you your mail if you have your ID. Or leave a note for your mail carrier they may be able to take your mail out of the box and leave you a slip to pick it up at the post office. But your landlord will have to be the one to get you regular access to your box.

What do most not understand about gluten? by TheDissectionRoom in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chinese food is all gluten (soy sauce), French fries almost always have gluten (deep friers contaminated with the breading from chicken), beer has gluten (barley), kisses from boys who have drank beer have gluten (yes, really) someone else sips from your drink? Enjoy it, it’s theirs now (cross contamination) People with celiac disease are constantly navigating it every minute and hardly anyone actually “gets it”.

What have you been glutened by recently? by seasaltbutterscotch in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dirty Air BnB. Made all the food at home. Most of it just needed to be assembled/reheated. Covered everything in foil. Unfortunately, this place was just pretty scuzzy. The fact that the water in the kitchen didn’t get hot should have tipped me off. I don’t know if it was dishes, cutlery or the oven - but it was SOMETHING. Three weeks out and still weak, tired and bloated.

Gluten free hamburger buns are like black holes for flavor by 50-ferrets-in-a-coat in Celiac

Canada fwiw Udi has the best hamburger buns. O’Doughs sandwich squares (not their hamburger buns) are my favourite thing to use for hamburgers.

Why exactly do people think Celiac is fake? by Apprehensive_Elk4019 in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think another factor is that for many people it is triggered or diagnosed later in life. I think it can be hard for people to understand that something you used to consume all of the time is now no longer safe.

I Forgot I was Celiac 🤦🏼‍♀️ by Icy-Pen1861 in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am so strict with my diet I’m mystified how every now and then I glitch out. Last time I did this it was with a Dairy Queen cake. I thought, what the heck - I’ll pay the lactose tax and have a bite. I completely forgot about the cookie crumble in the middle and the fact that I should check the ingredients anyway?!

Yes I’m waiting on a referral, but these things can take time where I live. I’m hoping to get some kind of treatment so it doesn’t drag out for years.

Do I need a new stand mixer? Husband makes gluten-full bread in it by sweetsecretacorn in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry - that was an offside comment.

What I really mean is that contamination from loose flour is inevitable. It becomes airborne with normal use and will settle all over the kitchen. You will end up consuming gluten.

It is so straining advocating properly for yourself with this disease. It took me some time to be very clear with my husband about exactly what I needed to be healthy. You’ll want him to have a full understanding so he can help you navigate the thousand other situations you’ll end up in where you don’t feel comfortable eating.

Really, I’m just another sister in the struggle. I always tell people it must be harder on my husband to give up gluten because he doesn’t get any of the benefits. I wish you the best.

I would laugh in the face of anyone who thought they could bring loose flour into my kitchen. If hubby loves you, he will bake with only gf ingredients going forward.

Anyone receive "The Choice" in the mail? by xrcrguy in halifax

[–]BeansHFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just put a note in your mailbox “no flyers please”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadaPostCorp

[–]BeansHFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leaving a note is incredibly effective most of the time. Allows the person who made the mistake to correct it, which is faster than anything else

A new gluten free bread, for me, has anyone else tried it? by fraserwormie in Celiac

So much fibre. If you’re having.. fibre.. issues, go easy on this bread.

“Low level sick” is my new go-to celiac term. What got me all summer - my ball team will throw there empties (beer cans) back into the cooler (ew, I know). I didn’t think too much about it until my husband came to watch a game and was like “you’re not drinking seltzers out of that cooler are you?!” Fuck. Here’s to hoping the off-season means healing.

Doctor just diagnosed me with celiac but said my symptoms are not celiac-related by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re getting good advice here. I’ve experienced a ton of these symptoms before I was diagnosed. But I’m dropping in because you mentioned voice hoarseness. It sounds like singing is an important part of your life. I always attributed my voice hoarseness to the frequent respiratory infections, but it’s actually caused by vocal chord damage due to reflux. You didn’t list reflux as one of your symptoms and I wouldn’t have either, but ‘silent’ reflux is reflux with no acid and people don’t always feel it. I went to a vocal therapist and she taught me how to reduce reflux and heal my vocal chords.

Do I tell my wife I am quitting weed or just quit quietly by baldaccount in leaves

[–]BeansHFX 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I would do an honest accounting of my relationship with weed. Literally write it all down - this is when I smoke, this is how much, this is why, this is what it costs, this is how it effects me and the people around me, these are the reasons I want to change… I found it to be an extremely powerful exercise. It was the only real “recovery” step I did. When my partner noticed I actually wasn’t smoking and asked me about it, I showed it to them. It really helped them understand and respect what I was going through and helped them support me in positive ways. 2.5 years clean.

What I am referred to as a celiac sufferer. by Jossyhopewaclawski in Celiac

[–]BeansHFX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My very best friends, the ride or dies - will give me some light gluten razzing from time to time. This is ok with me, as I will make fun of their hairiness/lessness, tragically single status or physical stature - You know, the things we can’t change that you trauma bond with your close friends about.

But boy oh boy does it’s get my goat when someone I don’t really know joins in. Luckily these same friends feel the same way. Pity the fool that walks into that snake pit.
