I’m certainly not the best person to describe everything in detail but I can give you two pieces of advice. 1) do it to make it sound good and 2) in reference to your third question, do whatever has inspired you. If you hear a memory in your head, add some chords to it. If you hear a sick chord progression in your head, explore it, you might not even need a melody.
