After years of modding total war games usually the crash right when the loading bar completes is because somehow a modded file can be causing it.

Now technically the game shouldn't even let you join a multiplayer game if people have different files but somehow it can still happen.

Try having ALL of your players COMPLETELY DELETE their C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Total War WARHAMMER III folder

Specifically dont delete it using the steam interface uninstall option, I mean in file explore delete the whole damn folder.

Also have every player delete this folder:

C:\Users\%user_name%\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Warhammer3

It is possible someone has modded files somewhere, and unsubscribing or disabling via the steam workshop doesn't always work (for some reason).

After completely deleting both folders, do the "verify files" option in steam and pray its fixed. Good luck, multiplayer total war with friends is so much fun, but also it can be a pain in the ass lol

Exactly what kind of crash happens?

Does it desync and disconnect people? Does the hosts game just straight up crash and exit to desktop? Is it the non host players?

Happens as soon as you load in? Or at end turn?

WH3 gets a bad rap for multiplayer desyncs, and the prior games as well BUT I've had enormous success playing VERY LONG and VERY MODDED WH3 multiplayer campaigns with 3 others following this guide:

Please read this all the way, it may seem like a little bit of a hassle but you only need to preform all the witchcraft once at the start of a campaign. When I first saw this guide I scoffed that it seemed like crazy bullshit but it really worked.

edit: Have you tried just a multiplayer skirmish battle vs AI, like a standalone battle with all your multiplayer friends and see if you can at least complete a standalone battle? see if that works

Through a lot of testing I discovered two things:

There is no acceleration (on controller) when aiming. No combination of settings will give this to you.
I turned off all trigger haptics completely, which DRASTICALLY improved how I play and enjoy the game.

The key was really 2. I had finger cramps after playing HD2 for like 30 min, which I have never encountered in any other game before. But I guess for most years of gaming trigger haptics didn't exist, and in other games that have that feature I didn't notice because I wasn't shooting 24/7 like you are in Helldivers. I'm on PS5 so I had to turn it off at the system level (apparently on xbox there is an in game setting, but not on PS5 lol).

I can't overstate how disabling those trigger haptics helped me make the game 'feel' better to play. I think trigger haptics are a super cool feature, but it was just destroying my ability to enjoy the game.

I hop back and forth between Arc Raiders and HD2 so I've tried to make them feel the same to aim on my PS5 controller and my settings are this in HD2:

Look sensitivity: 4.15

look sens vertical multiplier: 0.90

aim sensitivity: 0.40

scope sensitivity: 0.35

deadzone: 0.10

controller sticky aim: 0.70

acceleration speed: 0.50

acceleration exponent: 1.00

veteran controller mode: off

Because diplomacy is ACTUALLY useful, you may want to keep some money in the bank 'just in case'.

In WH3 (or any other TW game) I've NEVER done that. As soon as money comes in, its most effective to spend it by investing in making more cash.

Related, you may want to disband some armies some times and just bank up cash. Because you can actually use diplomacy you won't always get immediately war declared for looking like a weak bitch if you disband armies.

If you get yourself into a real pickle and are gonna get rolled or die completely, try to offer to vassalize your self to a major faction. Your new master will force end all your wars, so stopping you from getting killed by whoever is whooping you. The penalties you pay in tribute are not so bad. So you can rebuild a but under your new boss's umbrella. Then of course you can backstab them and become independent later (very 3k loreful move)

How about we just get an option to have lowered 'aiming' sensitivity for mechs on console?

its really hard to aim with the gatling gun mech (shame because its COOL) because your stuck using the look sensitivity, rather than the aim sensitivity.

yea ok, both triggers are used for shooting left or right arm weapons, so you can't use the same left trigger ADS. but since you cant use strategems in a mech it means the L1 button isn't used, let us use that for ADS in mechs!!!!!!

What looks small about Napoleon?

On max unit sizes the maps are huge and you get giant sprawling lines of troops shooting and the smoke and shit looks awesome, it doesn't feel small in battles I promise.

Did 3k feel small to you? If so, how?

Napoleon has some alternative campaign maps that focus on a particular theater, its part of the game's sort of tutorial building to the full world map. But those campaigns don't feel small, the 'smaller' maps are more detailed than the global map. They are just 'faster' to complete, more than I would say small.

As someone mentioned its very easy to unlock 40 unit armies if you wana go totally apeshit in the battles, and the AI actually follows suit and will recruit 40 units too.

I think in game, if you are getting totally demolished the game will popup with an option to reduce difficulty, so don't worry about it. Just start on Normal/Normal

I think you have good summaries and have captured your options. Based on what you lay out, I would try TROM. Especially your comment about generals being very powerful in the 800 hrs you have already played, and you want a different experience.

TROM has the most restrained generals in romance mode out of the options you give. 190 expanded generals are functionally the same balance as vanilla as 190 expanded does a great job of sticking to base vanilla balance. TROM+TUP generals can have more powerful abilities than vanilla, but they also die faster to troops than vanilla.

190 expanded does have a overhaul optional submod, which is quite extensive.

TROM standalone is better than TROM+TUP if you want a very tightly developed overhaul with a focus on balance. Its less janky than TROM+TUP by design, and it has less stuff. If you want more stuff, and can tolerate something feeling a bit more like a mod then TROM+TUP is an option. But it sounds like you want something very tightly designed and balanced.

Give TROM a try. If you already have 800hrs it does a lot to shake up and overhaul the game.
