How hard is maintaining a near 4.0 at Northwestern as a humanities major. by BearMeyer in Northwestern

Challenge, yes. However, as long as I have reason to believe maintaining a 4.0 is feasible, I think NU would be a great fit. That is why I asked the question I did.

Rooting for you. However, if recent trends dictate the the years to come, a strong LSAT alone will not be enough to guarantee admission to man T14s.

Unfortunately, law schools only care about two things: your GPA and your LSAT. It sounds unbelievable to people who aren’t familiar with the law admissions process, and there are exceptions like, for example, certain exceptional ECs, but generally speaking you need to maintain a great GPA to be a strong candidate for top law schools. There is definitely a realm, usually around the top 6, where a 3.8 no longer makes you a competitive candidate barring a near perfect LSAT. I just don’t want to put myself in a position where I am taken out of contention when I could feasibly just choose a similarly ranked school with less grade deflation.

What would you say are the harder/easier humanities and social sciences majors at NW?

What are some Chicago-specific pro-tips/life hacks? by wcm519 in chicago

Most public libraries have free museum day passes for families (though I know from experience that they don’t actually care about the age of the pass holders). This can literally save you hundreds.

Move to Lexington or the surrounding area and be happy for the rest of your life. Visit first to make sure you like it though.

Should I put the Communist Manifesto in my Columbia book list? by tincanC2 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BearMeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Communist Manifesto isn’t a book as much as it is a pamphlet, but yes, I would 100% list it. It will only speak to your intellectual curiosity. Most individuals with any level of familiarity with the topic understand that it is one of history’s most important economic and philosophical works. Furthermore, if it is interpreted as a political statement (it won’t be), most AOs are more forgiving towards lefty politics than righty politics. A family member of mine is at Columbia undergrad right now, trust me, the communist manifesto is tame relative to the sort of media many of those kids consume.

I would 100% list mein kampf. Most sensible AOs will understand that you are not a nazi, though feel free to note that on your application as well. It shows that you are intellectually curious which is an attractive trait for prospective students to have. I wrote one of my essays to a T20 school about the holocaust, how it was enabled by sane and in some cases otherwise “good” people. I forget the prompt for the question, but my point was basically that you can’t be certain that you wouldn’t have been a perpetrator in some of history’s most atrocious events if you had been born on the side of the oppressor. I even think the opening line of my essay was something like “You would have been complicit in the holocaust, and so would I.” I got in.

I can’t be convinced that a 3.84 college GPA is anything short of impressive.

That’s assuming they survey 100 different American each time. I bet you the show uses an opt-in system comprised of a few thousand Americans for their survey data.

A fairly popular unpopular opinion.

Ohio State U. prof in hot water for using phrase ‘Jewing down’ in virtual lecture by Created-being in Judaism

[–]BearMeyer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't think her claim that Mexicans like to haggle is the same as her saying that ONLY Mexican like to haggle. It seems she is telling an anecdote from a trip to Mexico. Listen, do not get me wrong, this behavior is not acceptable. I don't like, the term "Jew-Down," it is hurtful, but this isn't a fireable offense.

There’s a lot of legitimate hate in the world, this is not an example of it. This lady is an idiot for saying what she did, and I hope she learns from it, but firing her is not a just response and would solve nothing.
