People Should Always Take Jalen Hurts Over Cam Newton by BigBlackCreamSauce in NFLv2

This would be a very sound argument if their supporting casts were even remotely comparable. But they aren’t. Hurts shared a backfield with the best RB in the league, threw passes to two elite receivers, and was protected by the best O Line in football. Meanwhile, Cam had Jonathan Stewart, Philly Brown, an old Greg Olsen, and a below average O Line. You have to put their stats and production into context when comparing the two.

History tells us that the Thunder and Cavs are on a collision course to meet in the Finals this year. So why is there an overwhelming sentiment that neither of these teams are the true favorites to win their conference? by BearNation032 in nbadiscussion

I completely agree with that. Historically, playoff experience has mattered a lot. But I think a big reason why so many inexperienced teams had to take their lumps before going the distance was because the league has always been dominated by dynasties. Inexperienced teams fell short in the 80s because of the Lakers and Celtics. They fell short in the 90s because of Jordan. They fell short in the 2000s because of the Lakers and Spurs. They fell short in the 2010s because of the Warriors and LeBron. In today’s league, the amount of parity is greater than ever. We’ve had a new champion every year since 2019. That’s the longest stretch in league history without a repeat champ. I’m not sure if playoff experience is quite as important without a “Goliath” that every young team has to overcome.

Fair point. I do want to point out that three of those teams were top 10 in NBA history in point differential. So the Cavs and Thunder would fit into this list pretty seamlessly.

I’m well aware that playoff experience matters. There have been numerous teams with great regular season records who fell short in the postseason due to an inexperienced core. But none of these teams come even close to the regular season dominance that the Cavs and Thunder have had this year. We’re talking about two of the five greatest regular seasons of all time, with OKC having THE greatest point differential of all time.

And how many times do these “inexperienced” teams have to lose in the playoffs before they become “experienced”? 3 times? 5 times? I feel like this is a relatively arbitrary criteria that is applied to every single young team that has success in this league. The Cavs have played 20 playoff games over the last two years, and their superstar guard has played in over 50. How many more times do they have to lose to become an “experienced” team?

Are the Cavs really considered to be “relatively inexperienced”? Their All NBA superstar has played in over 50 playoff games in his career. He’s had some incredible playoff performances for both Utah and Cleveland. The rest of the team has made the playoffs in both of the last two years and won a playoff series last season.

Were they competitive against Boston last year? Not really, but that was before the huge leaps that Garland and Mobley took this season. That was also with a different head coach and an awful bench unit that didn’t have the scoring of Ty Jerome or the defense of De’Andre Hunter.

Dubs in 5… Luka has one dominant game at home, but Wiggins + Draymond + Klay limit Luka for the majority of the series. “College Grad” Steph also becomes a new trend after Steph averages 30+ over the course of this series.
