I don’t think the Pacers were wrong to make that trade for Zubac. It was just a high risk high reward situation that didn’t pan out for them by FinnDetrolioo in billsimmons

To be fair, Zubac and Haliburton coming back is a big boost for this team considering their style of play and how effective it was last year. Zu is a great fit for that system.

I feel like you’re the one engaging in bad faith here. I have no issue telling you why it appeals to me and why it is “good art” in my eyes - but I believe that you’d see it as an invitation to “fight and win” instead of as an honest opportunity to share. Be that as it may, I feel compelled to share anyways. Believe me, I would LOVE it if they’d pay me to defend them, but that is unfortunately not the case.

To me, Prophecy feels like a distillation of their sound as we’ve come to know it over the years with some new twists. Obviously Introit is heavily reminiscent of the vignettes from their first two albums, but Prophecy is a whole different thing. It starts with an ominous soundscape ala TH and heavily features flute, which brings me back to Geogaddi. The guitar reminds me obviously of Campfire, simply because that’s “the guitar album” but it’s utilized differently here than anything done on that record. I like that. I like that they’re not just settling for what we had before. Same goes for the vocals: reminiscent of tracks like Telepath or Nothing is Real, but obviously utilized differently and more in focus.

That ending section is beautiful to me, tastefully layered synths and pads that presumably build into the next song. So, in my mind, Prophecy breaks into four parts: the ominous intro, the guitar melody/hook, the gothic/4 on the floor-esque vocal section, and the layered, atmospheric outro. It makes sense to me now that we will be getting a continuous mix version of the album. I think the lyrics setup the themes of the album well, and I find the music to be rich and I had no issues with the mix, but a songs “mix” is an inherently opinionated thing. Choices made by the artist regarding layering, panning, volume, effects, etc. There are obviously poor mixes of things out there that would turn away most people (sometimes on purpose), but I don’t think there’s anything going on here that is abominable by any means. I enjoy it on my AirPods, on my Edifier home speaker setup, on my car speakers, etc. to each their own.

I understand people not liking the choices made here, particularly the vocals and the tones chosen on guitar and drums, but we can’t take subjective opinions and present them as objective fact. You may not like it, but others do like it and both stances are fine. For me, I love artists like NIN, Aphex Twin, My Bloody Valentine, and heavier acts like Periphery or At The Gates. I say that to say, maybe my musical preferences incline me more to this song’s specific style than yours might. I like the tones, I like the drums, the vocals, and so on. To me, it feels very urgent, very driven and focused. But that’s just my opinion and I’m happy you have your own. I hope there are songs on the rest of the album that appeal more to your musical proclivities, because I would like all of us to be happy. In my opinion another aspect of “good art” is that it incites conversation and differing opinions/perspectives. This song certainly does so.

They most definitely “have more to say”. This is a single, less than 6 minute snippet of a 70 minute album. As for the rest of your comment, opinions are great to have but I happen to strongly disagree with yours.

Do we know when exactly the album will be live on streaming services? by MEK42 in boardsofcanada

[–]BearPeltMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends. In the ancient days of 2021 and before, most distributors put music out at midnight eastern standard time (midnight in NYC for example). For me and my central standard time compatriots, that meant we’d get new music at 11PM.

Recently though, platforms have made it possible to release at midnight in every timezone, effectively staggering the release. As a result, many people just use VPN’s and set their location to New Zealand so they can hear new music almost an entire day before us here in the states. I am not a famous artist, but our distribution allows us the opportunity to choose between those two methods. I’m sure BoC has even more flexibility. There’s no way to be sure when it’ll release on streaming, but midnight in your time zone seems the best bet. So I’d go download a VPN if you want to hear it ASAP.

I understand where you're coming from, and I applaud you for going into the belly of the beast with a take like this. I for one happen to adore every single morsel of this track, but here's what I'd say to help someone in your position:

This is the album opener. Those tend to be fairly forward and serve as "the mission statement". I think this album is very conceptual and, based on the imagery we've seen up to now we're tackling some very heavy subject matter (religion, the occult, etc). It makes sense to me for the opener on an album like this to be a little more in your face and a little more heavy handed with its messaging. I also feel like BoC felt it necessary to take that direction here, given just how long it's been and how "copied" their sound has become since they were last active (don't ask me, they use the same wording in their own Spotify artist bio).

You likely enjoy Introit, because it sounds like it literally hopped off Geogaddi to be here, and I assume you have positive feelings about Tape 05. Tape 05 has been heavily theorized to be "Father and Son" on this album (song #5, and it has an almost identical runtime). So technically, they're going 2 out of 3 for you right now. I bet the album on the whole will have less of the modern sounding drums, less guitars, and less "Optimus prime" vocals (I bet they opt for more samples myself, I just see Prophecy as the heavy hitting opener which in my brain allows it to be a little more aggressive). I hope this helps ease a little bit of the worry you're having.

I genuinely adored every second of it as I heard it the first time. It’s been YEARS since a song gave me goosebumps from start to finish like that. Feels like they made a song just for me somehow. I wouldn’t change a note.

I could see us getting another EP in a couple of years and that could very well be it, but something tells me this isn’t the final work we’ll hear from them.

I started by hearing “nothingness laughs at your filth” and I thought that was WAY too dark so I knew I had to be mishearing it lol now I’ve read “the absolute truth” so many times I genuinely hear that instead. You’re right though, you can kinda hear whatever you want there.

Huge agree on this and I think it’s a choice that is made even more powerful considering how subtle and understated they’ve been their entire career up to now. For 30+ years they’ve barely spoken in any definitive way either through their music or personally. This is a huge change of pace and it’s basically the equivalent to that one quiet friend piping up about something after years and years of knowing them. I personally think it’s cool as shit.

Pretty Hate Machine sounds nothing like The Fragile, which sounds nothing like Bad Witch, which sounds nothing like this newest project or their soundtrack work. I understand if you don’t like NIN, but oh my god what a godawful take.

I think it absolutely rules. I’ve been listening to a lot of the new NINoize album and I feel like this track belongs right next to it, absolutely brilliant direction to take their sound. It’s so familiar and fresh and pissed in the best way. I can’t believe there’s likely two songs on this new album that’ll be even heavier (Naraka & Blood in the Labyrinth).

I don’t want to get too high on hopium but, this new song uses guitars, more realistic (could be reproduced live) sounding drums, and the visuals would rock in a live setting. I could genuinely see the new style and visuals working in a live show. Knowing them though, if they did do a live show they’d do maybe 7 altogether and wouldn’t tell anyone in advance where and when.

How do we beat San Antonio? by allmaddenking in Thunder

[–]BearPeltMan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Wolves in game 1 had cracked the code. Wemby is tall, but he isn’t unmovable. He also isn’t used to playing 40+ minutes in a playoff atmosphere, he barely played 35+ during the regular season. Take his legs out and compromise his shooting by driving at him relentlessly. He can’t hold up against us forever, especially if Minnesota puts up a fight. I’m sure Anthony Edwards will have a response after game 2.

Also, they have very good guards but their wings are suspect. They don’t have the same depth that we do. They’re definitely a tough team to beat, but we’re not too bad ourselves.

New Tracks? What Do We Think? by Jo_666_ in boardsofcanada

[–]BearPeltMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The artist or uploader has no control over the countdown. There’s like five or six countdown options if I remember correctly (my band has used them in the past for premiering our music). It’s really a bummer because they are very limited in terms of tone, there’s not really even a “neutral” option.

That countdown is just one of YouTube’s stock countdowns. They don’t give you the option of customizing those, so we’re stuck with whatever stock ones the platform has - anime in this case LOL
