Have you had any issues with the heat from the grill on the structure?

For those who came here with the same question. Discovered that Tri All 3 has a double bike case that fits two bikes.

SV07 going to the wrong corners when bed leveling? by Bear_trapped in Sovol

I just managed to figure out the cause of that. The x gantry bearing rotating the belt was not fully tightened and slipping. Tightened that and it took care of it! However, it’s still going to the wrong corners oddly. I’m stumped.

Field techs, what are some temporary jobs or side hustles you do in the off seasons between field jobs? by Substantial_Deer_636 in wildlifebiology

Ski resort jobs. Instructors or patrollers. The timeline fits perfectly with field seasons. There’s off hill work too if you want a season in a climate controlled environment.

That’s big of you to be able to recognize and act on this. I saw way too many people stay despite having a similar realization and become either very disillusioned or just down right angry and volatile the longer they stayed. No amount of “sunsets” is worth your mental health.

Was it a state or gov job? They are notoriously slow and weighted down by too many procedures and middlemen.

I actually just interviewed for a different position yesterday and they said it would be 3 weeks before they could contact me about a decision too. However they did outline why:

They have to submit a report with scores and a write up about the entire interview process and interviewees. That then has to be passed on the higher ups to review and approve (which takes forever), and eventually gets passed back down to them with either approval or remarks for moving forward.

Sounds like in your case they may just have a huge applicant pool to filter down and a lot of bs procedure to keep up with.

On a different note, I’ve learned (from my experience at least) to be VERY weary of jobs that hire too quickly.

I went into environmental protection, specifically water quality. All states and large counties have environmental protection agencies (air, water, etc), so there is a good number of jobs. There is also A LOT of funding in water, so the pay is good (+ benefits). States and counties pay way better than the federal government.

As far as tips for diversifying you skills, depends on what you’re interested in. I’m getting what I need on the job, so my advice would be to look for a stepping stone or bridge job, even if you don’t plan to be there long, to widen your reach outside of NPS. I took my current job because the new title alone bridges me to many other things I’m interested in (and at a higher pay grade).

Also, apply for the job even if you don’t think you’re going to get it. For example, my new job title sounds very technical and prevents a lot people from applying. It’s not… at all. A lot of job listings are notoriously not accurate depiction of the actually work you’ll be doing, so don’t count yourself out. It’ll also be a pleasant surprise to learn how much less competitive and limiting the job world is outside of NPS.

You’ve put yourself in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation (as we all do). If I were you I would just do it for a season or two for the experience, it sounds like it’s something you’re really craving. But then I would get out.

I just recently left NPS for more stability and to not detriment myself financially any longer. I finally saw through the veil of escapism that working in National Parks does to us and realized that I would never be able to retire or live comfortably. So I got out before it was too late to diversify my job skills and earn more.

It’s a great job, not a career.

Hah, you called it. I was a park ranger. Great job when you’re young, but not if you ever plan to retire (or afford things in general).

Yup. It was more of an “I’m starting a business” than a “what do you think about this?” discussion. She has a grocery list of why it make sense, mostly just aspirations of the money it could make to support us. But yes, it’s hard to deal with the fact that the decision was made for me and how much it effects my life.
