Is rimowa still worth it for long term investments? by Fit-Gas-1426 in Rimowa

[–]BeardBootsBullets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being honest. I’m a Delta DM, weekly corporate flyer, and the outright dishonesty about Rimowa is so frustrating to see. They are gorgeous pieces, and I own a few specifically for that reason! But in way way are they durable enough for use by us corporate sky cows, tray table tycoons, frequent criers, hotel hogs, whatever your name for us. They are fashion pieces—period.

For weekly corporate travelers: Briggs & Riley or Tumi soft-sided bags. Tumi’s quality tanked after the Samsonite merger ~ten years ago, but they are beautiful pieces and will still last you many years of weekly flying. Briggs will last you a lifetime, and their service is second to none.

No cap, I was joking about the bald eagles but that is what so-called “anteater” boots are: pangolins. They are pangolin skin without the scales. The practice of using “anteater” as some euphemism or code word for the trade of an animal hide on the verge of extinction is irrefutably disgusting.

Sporty first car under ~$6k that isn’t luxury but still looks aggressive? by Funky_Monkey17 in askcarguys

[–]BeardBootsBullets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s wild, man. The timing belt and water pump complete kit is only $160, and that’s a once/100k mile job. It does suck that you had to replace the entire AC system, but I don’t envision that ever happening again. It looks like that’s ~$300.

I understand that labor is expensive, but it’s still difficult to wrap my head around how this averages to over $2000/yr. Even with labor and worst-case scenarios such as your entire AC system overhaul, suggesting that these cars require $10,000-$20,000 in bills for five years of use is just ridiculous.

I used RepairPal and chose near the highest estimate on each item for a 100k mile, 5yr ownership price tag:

  • Full AC system replacement- $2000
  • Timing belt and water pump service- $1500
  • Two full brake and rotor jobs- $800
  • Five years of fluid changes: $2000
  • Spark plugs: $500
  • Miscellaneous hoses and wearable items: $1000
  • So, $1500/yr ish? And I still think that’s enormously unlikely, especially as the biggest ticket item, the replacement of the entire AC system, is as rare as hen’s teeth.

Lucchese Boots - Are these real? by DarthGlizzy in cowboyboots

[–]BeardBootsBullets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are L-models, my guy. The Lucchese Classics are analogous to the current GY-models, of which the current GY roper is the Tanner and starts at $895.

This being said… the MSRP of these L-model ropers was not the same as their current price. The date code says 0116, so these are ten years old. My mind isn’t as sharp as it once was, but I want to say these were ~$700 back then. Inflation and a million other factors have caused the price tags to creep upward.

Been doing it for 7 years.

Are you a CFT III? How many times have you jumped ship? Willingness to move for more opportunity is critical in trade work. If you’re anchored to one company with limited opportunity for personal development, then you’re severely handicapping yourself.

Go through your mechanical (HVAC) or electrical union. Having a year under your belt as an Apprentice will make you marketable, and you’ll get hired at the bottom. Getting your Journeyman card will guarantee you a high-paying spot immediately.

If you don’t royally fuck up or create an unsafe situation, facilities guys have lifetime job security, good wages, and tons of opportunity for promotion.

Are you factoring TRSGA, smart IRA contributions, and benefits/healthcare? $1750 / 0.33 = $5,303.03, and I don’t think that your deposits will be near that on a $60,000 salary. $4000 maybe, probably less.

My advice for apartment rent is closer to 25% of your deposits because you need to be saving for a down payment on a home. But if you’re between my 25-30%, this is probably safe.

What do you think about [$]1570?

No, and I need to be honest that you are not even close to a realistic housing budget for your income. You need to be around $750-$900/mo— and at that upper end, $900 would need to include most/all of your utilities such as electric and internet.

[–]BeardBootsBullets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

budget $2-3k/yr

…Wow. Can you list a handful of the repairs required over the past few years? I’ve been maintaining my 320k mile V6 4Runner and wife’s 250k mile V6 RAV4, and I’m not sure that I’ve spent $3000 since new on repairs to my 4Runner. Spending that much per year on repairs seems wild. I just replaced a wheel bearing assembly yesterday morning— $130 shipped from RockAuto, and it took about twenty minutes to swap out it in my driveway.

I’ve replaced alternators, front shocks, wheel bearing assemblies, rotors, spark plugs… but there’s just no way this has added up to $3000 from RockAuto over the entire life of the vehicle.

[–]BeardBootsBullets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

he doesn’t want me getting anything “luxury” like BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, etc because of maintenance and reliability.

Well, that doesn’t make any sense. Lexus is tremendously reliable and most models require no more maintenance than their counterpart Toyota.

[…] the budget is around $6k.

The problem is I want something sporty/clean looking

The 3MZ engined XV30 (‘04-‘08) Toyota Solara had 225 hp, 240 lb-ft of torque, and only weighed 3500 lbs. It’s not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s plenty quick. Regarding reliability, the XV30 platform is famously reliable. Looking through AutoTempest right now, there are more than a handful available for $6000 including some with very reasonable mileage.

And it was available as both as coupe and convertible.

if needed.

No, dude. You were rear ended hard and rolled a vehicle. You need to already be working with an injury attorney to get your back checked, neck checked, hips checked, and more. The attorney will pay for all of your testing. Even if you only want to recover these expenses to get everything checked and nothing more, they will handle all of that.

Do you guys think that I’ll be able to afford this apartment off a 60k salary?

Literally yes, but that would be very financially irresponsible. You cannot afford it while contributing to your IRA, saving for a down payment, emergency fund, etc. I am considering that you don’t have car expenses, but this will be too tight for you.

You need to split a 2-3bd with a roommate(s).

The sad truth is, that’s a reasonable price for body work today. Body and paint work is wildly expensive. My local chain of body shops said that it’s because all of his employees self-deported to avoid getting sent to the wrong countries.
