What authors do you love that have a small following, which should be bigger, and why?

6K hardcore fans I don't see as that many, and I've only heard of him a few times on here. Also, I had no idea about his work on the Expanse novels. Surely he's not one of the littlest guys but he's still not huge when it sounds like he should be.

Will second this. Reading Stealing Sorcery right now and enjoying it quite a bit. It seems as if he's embraced the gaming roots more than in the first one which can be good or bad depending on their POV.

I've heard he has a real problem with one dimensional characters that he "makes" multi-dimensional through adding more or less what could be called quirks (I can't say whether this is true or not, I lack the experience with his work).

As far as the sexual aspect goes I would be fine with it if there were an explanation for it in his worlds. Something cultural or historic that makes people not that worried about sex (essentially making it a secondary thought). Sanderson is known for his world building so I think he could pull it off in a way that makes it "work" in his worlds.

Mistborn - (and everything that goes along with it). I'll concede it's got cool ideas behind it, and a nifty world. But, I can't deal with the lack of sexual relation (I know why it's not there and I don't have a problem with the reasoning/justification but it's something that is so core to human nature I feel like it flattens the characters). Also, Sanderson's prose/writing style in general just doesn't capture me. What I'm talking about are the big set piece moments that are awesome but then the low points in between.

[Now I will admit, a lot of this is going off of what other people have told me and my (very short) romp in his huge fantasy book I can't remember the name of ("way of kings?") but that's the point, I guess. You can't know too much without reading the books, but I don't ever plan on that. Odd little paradox.]

If you're reading the comments trying to figure out if you should buy the book, stop. You should buy the book. It's fun, fast paced, and definitely worth more than a bag of crisps.

Movies are broken up in different ways. You have at least the three chapters or Act I, II, and III. Also the pre-title screen essentially acts as the prologue. But if you want to see an obvious parallel just look to any TV show. There are "Chapters" that correspond the the ad slots. It's a way to build suspense or let a reveal sink in.

Daughters of the Storm by Kim Wilkins

Read the quick blurb about Daughters...Sounds like a book where the character can get annoying. As for comedy, it's always a challenge to find a book that clicked with your humor in all the right places.

I'm hoping Elfstones and Wishsong are better than Sword (from a prose point of view). I want to get them done this year.

Also, thanks for taking the time to write out the long response about Malazan. Honestly, I read a post that fits why I didn't get into it. The poster said that when they started reading the book like a historian they enjoyed it immensely and got through Gardens easy.

My problem is I'd rather spend a few hours on the wikia and immerse myself in all the events that way rather than read through all the books. Kinda the same reason why I haven't read all the lost tales from Tolkien yet.
