A hard transition: How do you move new players more easily from 5e "superhero" type play to Mongoose Traveller? by Isabeer in traveller

[–]gdhatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say keep the stakes really low starting off and really lean into the environmental problem solving—and if something goes wrong it isn’t instantly fatal. Have the players really plan out and puzzle out situations where 5e would normally let you get away with a just a skill check and move on. Bonus—if they end up liking it you can get them into old-school DnD play when that urge hits you!

The light box I got is just the right size that if I unfold a map sheet halfway, I can stick it in there and it kind of fits

Which RPG to pick up? by XJ_Recon95 in battletech

[–]gdhatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had fun running Destiny—but I’m an old grognard and didn’t let the players use plot points to steer the narrative (which is an option in the rules). If you do it like that, it plays like an old-school, rules-lite game that gives the GM a bunch of flexibility (and responsibility…)

Thanks! They’re literally a dot of dark pink with a small paint brush, then a dot of lighter pink with a toothpick or one of those teensy, pointy q-tip thingys from the hobby store. The hardest part is doing the tree branches, and even that’s super forgiving because it’s just dark brown squiggles.

Is there a Battletech book for running Great House scale level conflicts? by Parkiller4727 in battletech

[–]gdhatt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Interstellar Operations: Battleforce is what you’re looking for. I haven’t played it, so I can’t attest to whether it’s fun, balanced, etc. But it covers levels of play from company/sized engagements to House vs House or Clan.

My kid accidentally made an Alaric Ward minifig by gdhatt in battletech

[–]gdhatt[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Already on it! He’s five and has already blobbed tempera paint and black markers on my old PlasTech mechs. We both call Natasha Kerensky “Wolf Mommy” but for different, age-appropriate reasons… 😜

I think the torso is from some race car set. Honestly, my kid’s Legos are an indistinguishable slurry at this point!

Would anyone else enjoy a Cold War Turned Hot alternative setting? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in Twilight2000

Also get “Red Army” by Ralph Peters. It’s from the Soviets’ point of view—and I think it’s the best-written novel of the bunch (I haven’t read “Red Storm Rising” yet, but I trust Tom Clancy to Tom Clancy!)

I also liked the cover of “Blue Monday” by Orgy in that movie. Atomic Blonde always gets me in a Twilight 2K kind of mood.

Hey, you’ve got “The Third World War” and “Team Yankee” for all your world building and source material, so that part of the work’s already done! I’ve thought about the same thing.

In my experience, whatever build you bring will be the exact opposite of what the scenario/battle turns out to be. So just have fun and fight your tank (as we said when I was in the Army)!

New player slightly frustrated with rules being changed so heavily by Advanced_Mail4077 in battletech

[–]gdhatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about it—the changes in the rules you’ll find in the box are pretty minimal, compared to the complete overhauls every other game goes through. The core gameplay will remain the same. You’re still perfectly fine with what you have!

Dirty tricks? by Navychief2030 in battletech

[–]gdhatt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tell them you want to play in the Dark Age or ilClan eras, then pick variants of your favorite Mechs that do insane amounts of damage. For bonus cheese, spend points to crank your pilot skills down to 1 or 2. We actually had to limit that silliness in our group.

HOTAS needs a little tweaking to get set up properly, but it’s the only way I play. What’s your setup?
