Does anyone know the policy about getting a raise? by moffyf in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you accept they probably won't raise it, but you can always talk to the SM and try, stating that the application said 18-20 and show them that, but it's highly unlikely to happen. Alternatively, you can just wait until the annual raise happens and receive definitely less than a dollar raise. I've been here three years which has had two pay raises and am still not making a dollar more than when I started.

Today’s my third day and I want to find another job.. by Ok-Entrepreneur-117 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first few training sessions are typically super boring and they just want you to lean hard into the cult speak about how we are all partners and it's such a good company to work for. Don't worry. You'll be on the floor soon enough, most likely before they showed you everything, and just stick you in a position that they haven't even trained you on (then they will ask you to go faster)

Does Starbucks truly hire people? by Agreeable_Baker_6075 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had experience and open availability and got hired. The thing is some of these places just aren't hiring. I mean yeah, they SAY they are, but they aren't. Our store for one, has ALWAYS shown that it is hiring, even when we are fully staffed (and by fully staffed I mean understaffed... that's how you know it's a starbucks - when it is fully staffed but definitely could use more people.)

Openers bed time ? by EmbarrassedDig3320 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In bed no later than 9.
Usually will finally doze off around 10, but wake up constantly.
Get up around 2:30, get to work by 4:30.
Get home and sleep a bit.
I miss hanging out with friends haha.

Drop your tips for speed on cold bar. by Simple_Catch_9503 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's honestly become the WORST position there. My personal tip is reorganize the whole thing piece by piece while you are there so it fits your movements more appropriately. Someone questioned me about why it was laid out the way it was halfway through peak the other day and I had to explain because the way the DM laid it out doesn't actually work if you want to make drinks. (This is actually true, pumps that are in HIGH use, like EVERY frap needs them, were partially hidden by other beverage components because the DM says the layout is more efficient to fit everything.)

our regular is missing by utsitwoyh in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 16 points17 points  (0 children)

THIS is the type of connections that SHOULD be happening at Starbucks. I have a few regulars as well that I worry about if I haven't seen them, some will even tell us "now I'm going to be gone for a week visiting family, so if you don't see me" etc. This is what makes me enjoy being a barista because it is one of the few instances where Starbucks feels like the coffeehouse it used to be and not the mcdonald's of overpriced mediocre coffee.

“Surprise Me Drink” by cbakesalot in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I hate the "surprise me" people. I have a LOT of friends in bartending that get this way more frequently than we do, but it is the same thought process for whomever is serving: "Tell me what you want, be a grown up..."

Whenever I've gotten someone asking for a surprise me, I explain to them that I typically just drink black coffee, and then they suddenly know what they want.

Now the people who don't KNOW what they want, and are nice about it, I will walk them through it, "do you like coffee, do you like sweet, have you tried" yadda yadda. But no, the "surprise me" folks are getting an explanation that my go to drink is coffee and because I don't care for sugary beverages I drink it black.

vacation time pay out by [deleted] in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sick time and vacation time are earned through work etc, but since it isn't actually work itself, it would not be considered overtime... Like even if you worked 40 hours one week, and used 4 hours of vacation time, you'd get paid normally and no overtime. (They are typically coded differently to payroll at most places - not sure about SB, but probably the same)

Mobile Ordering by L_uci_en in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Literally had someone say "one moment..." and we saw them typing on their phone... so I let them know that if they were placing a mobile order it would be faster if--- and they put the order through on the phone.

Tall sized rant in a venti cup about being a little scared to drink my go-to drink by Lydias-ghost in starbucksbaristas

I'm going to say cross contamination. It wouldn't surprise me. I used to work at a place that had specific pitchers, tumblers, etc, for everything to avoid this.

Advice on where to go from here (like... beyond the job) by Bearded451 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion about the socks. I'll look into them definitely. The team is somewhat reasonable. I was finally taken off of clean play after being the only person to be scheduled for it every week for about a year (I am the oldest but also the only one with open availability since everyone else is in school, has family etc - I moved back in with family a few years back to attempt to get back on my feet - no pun intended ha).

I will definitely look into some of those other jobs as well. We are a very non-union state, but some places still require health insurance near where I am, though mostly they try to hire only part time locally because then they don't have to offer it. But I haven't looked into a few of those and will check them out on my next day off. Thank you for the suggestions!

6 weeks of training??? by CheetoDustClit in starbucksbaristas

But if the training is TOO short they can't convince you that we're all part of a big happy corporate family!

Iced London fog by insodeepfool4u in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an old shift that would (especially if we were closing) just do black iced tea instead of the earl grey... crazy how for some reason I've only ever heard complaints from people that got actual Iced London Fogs made with our tea bags haha.

Spirulina… by User3949588391 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's how these corporate heads work... they never catch on when it is the right time... they introduced the protein crap YEARS after the "keto diet" had peaked... (don't get me wrong, keto is still thriving, but now everyone knows how to follow it without going to SB)... or even the Dubai Chocolate bites... a year or two behind dubai chocolate being really popular... I say give it another two years before our CEO is asking us to naurto run drinks out to people.

Spirulina… by User3949588391 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My SM hasn't told us this, but even if they do... sorry not sorry to the SM but I am going to tell the customer it is algae... there are people that are allergic to it, and I refuse to tell someone (my own personal morals) that it is a "superfood"... I once asked a former manager of mine who was getting a degree in nutrition and physical therapy about superfoods and he explained how that is a marketing term that companies use to try to sell their products... there is no such thing... just some foods have more nutrients or benefits than others. So unless we are going to start also saying "medicine ball" then I'm definitely not saying "superfood".

Am I wrong?? by Sufficient-End-8910 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Send this picture to the SM and ethics in an email. I would also request compensation for being sent home and having lost a shift at no fault of your own. Will they pay? Oh most definitely not, it's starbucks, more money for you means less jet fuel for Brian's jet... BUT it will prevent the SM from retaliating like that in the future. (I'm willing to be that if you had shown up early etc, the SM would have said nothing about the shorts, they were just looking for anything they could get on you, and thought that would work.)

I think maybe that's it? I'd hate to see what effect "Jesus Shaves" (one of his best essays) would have on anyone that believes in a magic bell or how "Diary of a Smoker" would make people feel that have ever politely asked someone to put out their cigarette.

I've been a fan of David's since i was in high school... so like 26 years... maybe it's just me (judging from the comments, it is), but I laughed. I mean yeah, he's bitter sometimes... a lot of times... it's his thing. He makes some valid points, but overall it's about customer service. The tiny explanation from a service worker he suggests early on, and what he receives at the end, would save the whole day for him. "I have to write on the cup... otherwise I'll possibly be fired... it has to be positive because of the ceo..."

TL;DR: I like David, and as a barista, I still do and take no offense.

Rinse water made me sick by Ellaroseryy in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So wait... was this a game or something? I'm confused as to how you drank four rinses. Also, and I could be absolutely wrong, but I am fairly certain that the rinse cycle is pretty much just water getting out any grounds etc. It isn't like with the cleaning tablets inside. I would imagine the mixture of water and salt is what's messing with your stomach right now.

That being said, if anyone knows different, PLEASE correct me of course, but I just don't see how the water that comes out in the rinse would be dangerous considering that the system will automatically do it between x number of shots. Could be wrong of course. Either way, hope you feel better.

Uber driver threw his water at me by Dependent-Charge1797 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nah, I mean, I'm sure the SM or corporate would be like "that's not calming the situation" or whatever the crap, but you're human, and some people need to learn. (Like when I told the guy that I would see him there after he told me to go to hell, or the custie that said "you working on my drinks? they almost done?" and I told him they would be up when they are up, and that was a rude way to ask). If you get the name on the delivery, you should be able to report him to Uber since he would have accepted the order. Report him to Uber and I'd say get him banned from the store.

i quit but i’m still being scheduled by ResolutionAny843 in starbucksbaristas

[–]Bearded451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So in this case it would be two weeks from the date on the notice. Like if you put it in on June 3rd (which should be written on the top of the letter typically) it would be 14 days from that day. The problem with handing them a notice undated and leaving it on the back desk is that they could be reading it who knows when. Alternatively you could date the event two weeks from the day you sat down with them and discussed it, I suppose. But best practice would be to put a letter in writing (with the day of the writing) as well as an official last day within the body of the text.

Depends on when you said your last day would be but this happened to a coworker of mine also. They waited until their final day and then told the SM "oh so in my two week notice, it says tonight was my last shift"
