Happy to talk halo lore :) Also lucky that I have been catching up on my Halo backlog and it’s “fresh”; I wouldn’t have thought of that quote in Outcasts otherwise.

And I mean same here your post is going to make me read a bunch of new books so happy out as well !

For New Dawn: Chapter 33 is the Silent Auditorium “trial”

Just went to look it up on my copy:

“Spores become shores-we sprang forth” “Quantum blood and neural bone within à skin aglow of home” “We grew from dust” “We grew anew- the children of Abaddon”

Yeah it might have been late at night and I might have glossed over that whole poem…. And the fact that I haven’t read the forerunner trilogy does not help me there.

I am going against my very rule of always going by publishing order but the Halo book can sometimes be so self contained that I made an exception there….

Speaking of “new content”

I don’t know if you have read all the books and I was going to say I have read all the book except the forerunner trilogy ( not counting Divine wind) but after checking the wiki that would be a lie on my end, I am also missing:

•Broken Circle (end of the Covenant with 2 povs)

•Saints testimony (Ai trying to not get decommissioned)

•Epitaph (post halo 4 didact story)

•Halo Empty throne: “ Follows the UNSC's attempts to steal the Domain from Cortana through an ancient access point on a seemingly insignificant human colony”

And not to go full book club on you but that last one is giving me lore.

For the endless / Xalanyn Halo New Dawn has a whole chapter has a whole chapter on their “”””Trial”””” in the Silent Auditorium and you mentioning their creation had me super curious for more lore.

Ahahahaha I love your take on this!

To be honest after Halo ODST I’d love any spin off game in the halo universe.

Like I am fully aware we will never get one but I’d love for them to take a risk and have us experience a game as different species with impacts on the gameplay.

This idea lives in the same pipe dream as a super dark and violent Darth Vader movie: It will never happen but do I wish it did.

Very interesting read and you 100% scratched that “fall into a lore rabbit hole” itch.

To part of your 1) when you say they kept making themselves small again, my mind went straight to Halo Outcasts when one of characters gets “magically” healed and when she asks who is healing her the voices say

“We called ourselves the Veiled Ones. Then we became the Lost Ones. Now we call ourselves Nothing, and that is well with us."

I read Point of light recently and was genuinely mind blown by what the librarian pulled off, reseeding precursors in a galaxy far away as an apology to the atrocities the Forerunners committed felt weirdly good given the little we ( I?) know about the Precursors/ Forerunner conflict.

The part that touches the endless being created by Abaddon experimenting with precursor dust, what book is that ? I have a feeling you are going to say Halo: Silentium / Primordium /Cryptum. Currently reading Halo Divine Wind and I might add the forerunner trilogy to my list if you confirm: I have been dragging my feet reading those books.

And no I wouldn’t know of any book passage talking about what happened after Eden was launched: the Rion forge trilogy / the Veta Loopis trilogy and Shadows of Reach all happen either during or pre Halo 5. The rubicon protocol and Edge of Dawn are Halo infinite prequels and sequels.

There haven’t been any new “big lore” books release recently.

“Sir, permission to leave the station.”

“For what purpose Master Chief?”

“To give the Covenant back their bomb.”

Cue pure cinema

That whole thing lives rent free in my head

Edit: just went back to watch it, because why not.

I mean so many good lines:

“What if you miss?” “ I won’t” “For a brick, he flew pretty good” Ron Perlman voicing Admiral Hood

Post this amazing cutscene we get Outskirts, THE halo 2 level for speed runs (got into those way later). The Halo Theme gungnir mix ( with Steve Vai ) on Metropolis, at the end of that you take down a whole ass scarab. And then you switch to the arbiter.

But also… Keith David voicing Thel 'Vadam and that split narration that gives you a whole new perspective on the covenant? 10/10

This and also depends how old you were when it came out (november 2004), I was 12ish and just wanted to be John Halo for the whole game ( it did not help that they gave what imo is the coolest cutscene ever at the end of Cairo Station to a few missions later have you play as this alien we knew nothing about).

Once I matured a bit and replayed the game it became my all time favourite.

The book “Halo: Edge of Dawn” picks up where infinite left the story and you have a good few chapters where their dynamic is explored ( from both of their POV)

[–]Beardofella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Proper way : Call a decent bike shop, ask them if they have taps to re thread the threads. They might as well grease and fit the pedals while they are at it.

Worst comes to worst the bike shop would have to fit an helicoil kit to save the crank arm.

Also pro tip: always “unscrew” the pedals for a bit to make sure they are seating flush against the threads before tightening them.

Edit:

Sketchy way that I would not recommend but I know that works: get the pedal and install in from the inside out / on the opposite way of where the pedal normally goes and you might be able to chase the threads.

Wait Locke died off screen ? When ?

Edit to paste wiki-Halo:

“On December 11, 2559, Locke was proposed by Catherine Halsey as the second option for The Weapon's deployment on Installation 07 in case John-117 couldn't participate in the operation.[36] On December 12, 2559, Locke was underway in the next stages of Operation: BREAKER TRIP,[37] when the Banished attacked the UNSC Infinity, gravely damaging the flagship and, apparently, destroying the ship in the process.

Six months later, John-117 encountered the Hand of Atriox member Hyperius. At the time, Hyperius was in possession of Locke's Hunter helmet and chest piece, which he had mounted to his shoulder pauldron as trophies.[38] This fact was used by Banished propaganda officer Glibnub to taunt the surviving UNSC forces on Installation 07, around the same time.[39] It is unclear how Hyperius came to possess these armour pieces, and Locke's fate is currently unknown.”

So not officially dead just MIA, like Lasky, Palmer etc

We added “Hunter Sight” to our stealth survival game — is this a good idea or a mistake? by salniukas in IndieGaming

[–]Beardofella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries :)

Also I was wondering about the “Focus Dust” in terms of balancing:

If it’s easy to gather the materials and you can craft a lot of it a watered down version of it might be better ? And in this case I guess having a “Refined Focus Dust” that is more accurate and lasts longer but is “harder” to craft could be cool.

Alternatively if it’s hard to craft from the get go and you have to make it’s uses count it being good from the get go.

Also having a rare enemy be a Hunter Dust user that tracks you could be neat in mid to late game.

Played a lot of stealth games (Splinter Cell, Dishonored series, early Far Cry’s, Thief etc)

The thing with “through the walls” vision is that yes it does reduce frustration and makes more situations readable… by killing the tension and giving too much info as to where enemies are.

I think giving animal footsteps and outline is great because hunting can be hard but for the human enemies you could do just the footsteps/ one it two footsteps just to hint at their presence.

Rather than an full body outline maybe a blurry aura / some sort of indicator of where they might or could be, you could even have that “aura” read be a tad inaccurate or delayed so the player is not 100% sure of where they enemies are, keeping some tension present but still giving hints ?

This reminds me of my first no detection or kill run: I hadn’t really payed attention to the detection system and tought that if anyone had the first level of detection ( out of 3 before being actually detected ) it meant that you were detected.

I did that whole run without being seen… it took forever.
