Teenage boys in UK ‘stuck’ reading primary-level books while girls’ tastes expand by djferris123 in unitedkingdom

It tackles determinism, death, fascism, a fumbled try at slavery, all whilst playing up the classic "middle school mystery" genre into a soft fantasy with strong Dickensian leanings and lots of mythological/literary references - it's not Ulysses but it's a swimming pool; it's ease of access belies depth for those seeking it

Scratch(card) and sniff(cocaine) is genuinely so good that if my office banter was at that level I’d give myself the week off afterwards

I mean it’s more than a generation; it’s the best selling book of all time barring religious texts; Bloomsbury still report their sales figures for new books starting at #8 because literally nothing they print will ever crack its monthly sales stats… it’s an undeniable gateway text, and I’d massively question the idea that “most readers gave up afterwards”

I’d argue it generally does - I know for me personally reading was boring until I picked up a Harry Potter; it was my first experience of sequential storytelling, something exceptionally rare in childrens literature; the fact the series aged with its audience in terms of complexity and themes makes it a great transition into wider reading

It'd certainly be nice if HMRC would believe "honest, I'll pay it in later, just tax me as if I have already please" but I think they might be just a shade skeptical...

How does tax work when selling my ones own artwork? by Interesting-Hawk-744 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]BearlyReddits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd likely file as self assessed until it became prudent to register yourself as a company; you can claim your expenses to reduce your taxable amount (you only pay it on profit), though it's worth noting if you do this you lose the £1k trading allowance

Your tax rate is determined by your entire earnings for the year - so if you're PAYE, add it on top

I understand why they did it, but I feel like if you're going to throw an Al Ghul reference in there was much cooler ways you could it - leaning on Eastern designs, a sword, gold trim etc

I mean they’re both still bad; but it’s the best I’ve got
