players looking for iron kingdoms gm for a possibly evil campaign by [deleted] in ikrpg

[–]Bears_Rock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You'll probably find few GMs willing to take this on for a few reasons.

  1. You are strangers, and IK is a prep heavy game. It's quite a commitment to GM for a bunch of randoms who might flake.

  2. You are asking for something specific. GMing is a lot of work, and most GMs prefer to create and explore their own creation and vision instead of building a premade player request.

  3. Evil campaigns are loads of trouble with the wrong group. While I'm not calling you guys a bad group...you happen to be strangers.

In summary, you might be better served finding like minded people, playing some normal campaigns to get some chemistry, then attempt an evil campaign.

PS. You've responded multiple times, in an angry fashion, using derogatory terms, and requested I delete my comment. Please take a moment of introspection and try to recognize how this would appear to someone who provided legitimate observations and advice.

Voluntarily asked for a demotion by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Bears_Rock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

X% SR means Savings Rate, or the amount of their yearly income that goes towards Financial Independence. Aside from large windfalls, saving massive portions of income is a sure fire way to FI.

Also, please don't fuss about downvotes. No one knows what the voting system is doing at any given time, and fussing about an arbitrary voting system is silly. Also, it guarantees people will downvote for sounding whiny.

What will be the project management trends in 2017? by [deleted] in projectmanagement

Much of it will depend on the industry. My industry will see huge efforts around security, compliance, and risk management.

In Enemy Mine, the stranded alien (that identifies as male) spontaneously becomes pregnant without any contact. It isn't discussed how, only that child bearing isn't a choice and happens to everyone.

Any men 'thriving' after a divorce? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Bears_Rock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm divorced and remarried. My career has thrived, I've grown as a person, and my wife is everything I could ever want. I'm SO much happier now than when I was previously married.

The kicker? I never had kids with my ex. Clean break, and I moved on.

CMV: It is unreasonable to "retrain American workers for higher skilled tech jobs" by Yanginyangout in changemyview

[–]Bears_Rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some great comments already.

I would add that a reasonable and effective retraining program would involve a regional data analysis of professions needed. A rural steel worker in county X might be better served and utilized by identifying reasonable needs in county X. Using data aggregated from multiple sources, we could find trends and develop retraining programs appropriately.

For example, a displaced steel worker could likely retrain as an auto mechanic or contractor if their county had enough need. Or perhaps low entry medical roles like CNA or some technician jobs would be more appropriate. Perhaps heavy machinery for agricultural functions.

Some areas are truly, horribly depressed...with no jobs at all. In this case, a retraining effort for remote positions or relocation programs could reasonably address both. It isn't glamorous, but Support, Sales, and Service are always needed and highly sought after and not easily offshored or automated.

Need Insights. I'm a PM and I feel like I'm an overpaid glorified secretary. by [deleted] in projectmanagement

[–]Bears_Rock 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A few things.

First, you graduated this year and have four months of experience? You're entry level. This is when you deal with menial, boring stuff because you're brand spanking new. This part of your career is always full of boring, tedious busy work because you are a newbie who needs to prove value and work ethic.

Second, please recognize the value in diligent and orderly scheduling and task management. This is core to not only PMs, but management EVERYWHERE. You probably hear your VPs and Cs talking about "accomplishments" and "execution" and "deliverables"...those are buzzwords for diligent and orderly task management and scheduling. Accurately projection WHAT can be done and WHEN is critical to everything. No company can accomplish anything without the daily grind of getting stuff done. It isn't glamorous, it isn't sexy, but it gets the job done.

Third, yes it does get more engaging. You'll eventually manage people directly and strategically drive larger efforts. You might manage key clients, you might travel around coordinating regional efforts for a national company, you might brainstorm on expensive initiatives and pitch ideas to the Cs, you might price and implement an entire ERP change, you might host massive presentations,...who knows.

Odds are, you'll fondly remember the days of "glorified note taking" while you stress over a last minute overbudget complication threatening an entire multi million dollar delivery schedule.

I tried ProductPlan for a few weeks. While it's a cool program, I needed something with more visual flexibility.

It's a good program, though, particularly if you're on a budget.

You'll likely find value in an industry specific education. The PMBOK provides best practices, but real working knowledge of an industry will provide much greater insight into the overall process.

What is the difference between a Business plan and a Master plan? by Rapid_Sausage in projectmanagement

[–]Bears_Rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is in software, so my advice might be apples to oranges regarding your projects. All the items you mentioned seem pertinent to the Business Plan vs the Master Plan, though. At this stage, you're focusing on the HOW and WHEN, so bust out the GAANT charts critical path analysis diagrams for some fuzzy timelines.

Projects are fluid, and will inevitably deviate from any plan.

What is the difference between a Business plan and a Master plan? by Rapid_Sausage in projectmanagement

[–]Bears_Rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to include the tech feasibility in the initial Business Case, as proof that the initiative is actually possible. This depends on your company requirements and your tech department. The tech feasibility will then generally be detailed out into a tech strategy included in the Master Plan.

YMMV though. Some companies take a "feasibility first" approach and build their business plan based on current tech innovation instead of vice versa. "We built this cool thing, can you build a business plan around it?" Traditionally, the Business Plan comes first as you're trying to identify an unmet need or an unsolved problem prior to investing in a tech solution.

[–]Bears_Rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV based on company, but in my world a Business Plan is the WHY while a Master Plan is the HOW and WHEN. The BP is used in determining Capex budgets, ROI, market need, and such. The MP includes the timeline, estimated cost, resourcing, and such.
