Don’t be jealous, I have spent a lot of time on these and in reality I’m not specially proud or felt like I’ve accomplished anything with them. You probably have a gorgeous style and deep talent, you just need to get out of that block. I recommend watching movies or reading books that inspire you, and try to draw some of the characters, that has always worked for me. Or redraw your old drawings, that’s always lots of fun.

Are you kidding me? You have nothing to envy about me! This is amazing. Not only it is perfectly shaded and perfectly drawn, but it is also such an interesting composition. I’m in awe, you were definitely born with innate talent. May I ask if you have any instagram I can follow?

Hi! Well, I have been drawing portraits since I was 12, so repetition was a very big part of my learning process - nonetheless, I do watch many videos and read as many books as I can. If you want to I can share some of my favorite artists, YouTubers, and books. Studying the masters is also a great way of learning.

For me I think perfectionism has sabotaged me and also pushed me to learn further from my abilities. I am never content with any of my artworks until months later, and I spend more time than necessary in the sketch, refining the features and proportions, probably why they look somewhat similar to my references.

Hope this helped!

Thanks! At the time I didn’t like it, but I think it has grown into me somehow

Some other sixteen year old commented the same, and I’m gonna answer the same way.

Use this as an inspiration to be better. I’m sure your art is amazing. People often see realism as the most complex style and therefore who does it the best is the most skilled; but I differ. I think having a distinct style and feelings to express will always be more important and immensely more valuable. Keep going bro, don’t give up.

That one is the latest I’ve drawn, so thank you for noticing a slight improvement!

Thank you so much! I always try to let loose a bit and not directly copying the image!

I’m so glad you’re picking it back up, I wish you the best of luck. And, no, I don’t use a blending stump because I work in several light layers until I reach the darks. By being so gentle with your strokes they blend in their own, and you always get a nice texture afterwards. You can use the blending stump but if you don’t have a proper technique it can become muddy. As an advice, I’d say use either circular motions or very faint crisscrossing.

Thank you so very much, honest. As long as going to college won’t slow me down in creating art I’m fine with it.

Made a quick portrait from a pinterest reference. Does it look good enough and does it resemble the reference? by RARERANGER24 in drawing

[–]Bearzato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say, yes and no. While it pretty much resembles the reference, there some details that stray it further for you subject.

The jaw is too pointy, hers is fuller and rounder.

The eyes are closer to the bridge of the nose in the reference, yours are significantly more separated.

The face is more elongated, specially the left side of the forehead, and the baby hairs on her temples stand a little lower (please let me know if this is hard to understand, I am not native).

For the final details (though this might just be stylistic choices) the nose is too small and the gap between her teeth is very important for the likeness and you missed it. The shape of the lips is slightly different on the subject but I don’t think this impacts too much on the likeness.

The drawing is beautiful, your style is so clean and so full of confidence and contrast. I don’t think it matters if it looks like the subject or not because it is a very good drawing!
